IELTS Cue Card Talk about someone who travels often by plane

Sample Answer

Air travel is a modern moral conundrum, but for some people it is unavoidable due to their job description. I will talk about my friend, Maximillian who is a pilot. He used to travel by air in nine-hour shifts for international flights, though currently, the airlines have suspended all travel due to Covid-19.

He is what one would call a true globetrotter, he loves to travel, and even takes his family abroad for his vacations. Whenever I call him I expect a new answer to the question, “Where are you?”. Due to this we have even stopped playing Atlas on our monthly game nights; it’s so unfair, he always wins.

But I’m glad to have a friend like him, he tells great stories and really puts into perspective how the world works. Although sometimes I do wonder how much air pollution the industry causes, I can hardly fault him for doing his job.

Max has traveled to both exceedingly wealthy countries and pitifully impoverished nations. He likes to tell us about his stays at various locations. I would say, due to his traveling he is the most worldly of us. He is a telling example of how travelling can broaden our horizons and influence our personality positively. His undeniable humility can attest to the same. I am proud that he does what he loves, that his job not only teaches him, but by extension also us, his friend group.

Sample Answer:

Clothes and accessories have come to represent more than just simple survival gear. They are a window into someone’s life, their personality, their wealth, their age and their experiences. We all have some clothes we enjoy wearing immensely and others that never get to see the light of day.

Speaking on the former, I will talk about my favorite hoodie. Right off the bat, when I mentioned hoodie it is obvious that this hoodie is going to be very comfortable and quite possibly oversized; well you would not be wrong in that assessment. But perhaps what you might not be able to deduce at first glance is the emotional value of this hoodie due to the memories it carries.

I received it back in 12th class during our graduation party as a gift from the school. I was endlessly curious as to what the shiny silver foil held. Out came a comfy back hoodie, it had my school logos on the sleeves and all of our batch’s names on the back forming a giant 2015. I was incredibly touched and distantly realized I might have torn up a little at the flood of memories in my mind.

I instantly put it on, and true enough, it was even more comfortable than it looked from the outside, for the inside had been lined in fleece. My mother will tell you how difficult it is to get that hoodie away from me once I have decided to wear it. The hood shape is simply perfect; even though it is oversized, it doesn’t slip into my face. The pockets can store more than what you would think possible, and why the sleeves sit snugly at my knuckles, just where I like them. But most importantly, I feel like I am enveloped in a big hug whenever I wear it, it reminds me of simpler days, of sunshine and laughter, of badminton on Sundays and swimming on Wednesdays. There is no doubt about it, that hoodie is my favourite piece of clothing.

IELTS Dehradun An event that you attended which was full of colour

Sample Answer

Colors are what make life beautiful and worth living. Different colors mean different things, Red is the color of sacred passion, yellow of joy and happiness. Here in India, we embrace color as our own. We even have a festival of colors, but today I want to talk about something much more personal.

I would like to tell you about my aunt’s wedding. Now, Indian weddings are synonymous with grandeur, pomp and all splendor of the heavens themselves. Typically, weddings have a three-day pre-wedding celebration. The first day is the engagement of the groom. On the second day, the bride is cleansed with yellow turmeric. And on the third day, a sing along takes place. The day off the main wedding the bride wears red.

My Aunt got married in early February, the days were just warm enough to feel comfortable in the full customary celebration wear. For every event, there was a dress code with color specification so that the guests could match. On the day of the engagement everyone wore white, to signify purity as well as a new beginning of sorts. The room held a crystal chandelier, the floor was blue marble. There was a notable likeness to a fresh winter’s snowfall.

On the day of the turmeric blessing, everyone wore yellow. We played with yellow turmeric and laughed with the golden sun rays. The third day for the sing-along, we were requested to wear pastels so that we could match the special rose decorations. But, it was the main Wedding night that was truly spectacular. My Aunt had never looked more beautiful, with her hair in braids, her hands in henna, and herself in a dark red, deeply embroidered gown. The guests wore a mirage of colors, from sparkly black to Metallic and holographic silver dresses, vivid green coats and florescent frocks. It was a sight to behold. Everyone danced under the stars, forming galaxies themselves. Truly, an event that paid homage to not only the blessed bond of betrothal but also to the colors that bring emotion into this very world.

High-level words and their meanings:

grandeur splendour and impressiveness, especially of appearance or style
homage special honour or respect shown publicly

Cue Card A small business you would like to start

Sample Answer

Today I will detail a business I would like to open in central Munich. The idea is to open a high-end Indian snacks parlour. I found Munich to be the most suitable location for such a business as eating Indian food is considered to be quite a common indulgence there. I believe this stems from the fact that much of the European cuisine lacks the spice and intrinsic flavour of Asian cooking.

This concept has been with me for quite some time. The special “hook” of this parlour is that you customize your own snacks. Sort of like Subway, but with a far fresher and a wider variety of choices. There will, of course, be suggestions of certain combinations for those with less experimental inclinations.

I am thinking of dividing the customization process into 3 parts: the base, filling and topping. Different types of traditional Indian snacks would be used for the base. The filling would consist of a choice of flavoured curds, boiled potato, chickpeas, lentils, peas, beans and other common ingredients. Last but not the least, would be the most extensive selection of different toppings. The selections would comprise topping fruit, flavouring sauces, and extra decorative pieces. The sprinkling spices would be found on the tables. One thing I would take care of would be to label each and every product on a scale of 1 to 10 on spice factor, as many people could unwittingly use unknown ingredients and regret it later.

The layout would be a rustic-bohemian hybrid style, with rich tapestries, low golden lighting and contrasting high chairs, all of which would be done up in a deep chocolate woodwork.

As you can see, this plan is very well thought out. The reason for the same is that during my time in Munich and India, I realized how much Indian cuisine has to give for the much lacking market in Europe. The detailing for this hypothetical business was finalized during our family eat out dinner when we happened to be discussing the variety of the menu. I believe it was an evening well spent, discussing a wonderful small business idea about something we were all passionate about.

indulgence Allow oneself to enjoy the pleasure of.

hypothetical Involving or being based on a suggested idea or theory
