IELTS CUE CARD # TALK ABOUT A TV SERIES YOU REMEMBER

Sample Answer

In this day and age, there are hundreds of TV channels broadcasting news, soap operas, reality shows, sports events, etc. There is something for the people of varied interests and choices. Here I would like to talk about an American fantasy drama series called “Game of Thrones”. I began watching it a few years back when one of our family friends recommended it to us. It’s an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. It has an ensemble cast estimated to be the largest on television. The series premiered on HBO in 2011, and its seventh season ended in 2017. The concluding season, 8, will be broadcast next year. The story revolves around the iron throne of the seven kingdoms and follows a web of alliances and conflicts among the noble families fighting for the throne. Game of Thrones has attracted record viewership, including an active, broad international fanbase.
The series is filmed in one of the most magnificent and breathtakingly beautiful locations in the UK, Canada, Iceland, Morocco, Spain and the US. The costumes and sets take the viewers back in time and captivate them throughout the serial. The series exhibits the most extraordinary cinematography skills, animation and graphics, including the giants and dragons, which seem absolutely real. Even a few video games have come up inspired by the game of thrones. The only thing which I dislike is excessive violence in some of the serials.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
Q1. Do you think most people watch TV for education or for entertainment?
ANS. I personally feel that majority of viewers actually watch TV in their leisure time for entertaining themselves. Most of the channels on TV broadcast soaps, reality shows and sports events rather than education-based shows. However, there are some channels exclusively telecasting lectures and tutorials which can be accessed by paying some extra subscription amount.

Q2. Should TV play a role in educating children? How?
ANS. Yes, TV can definitely be used as a medium to educate children. Mass media, like television, can have a profound impact on young minds. If I talk about certain channels like Discovery Science and National Geographic, they have a whole range of knowledgeable shows not only for adults but for children also. When the young minds actually see what they have studied theoretically, they understand and remember the ideas in a much better way. Also, programmes on animals and the environment make them sensitive about their conservation, which is a must in today’s circumstances.

Q3. Do you think TV viewing habits change as people get older?
ANS. It’s undeniably true that as people age, their day-to-day routine and interests also change. The same is true as far as the choice of contents of programmes and the time when they want to watch TV are concerned. While toddlers watch cartoons, teenagers have a keen interest in music and sports. Then, in adulthood, the focus is towards news and politics. Similarly, the elderly like watching religion-based channels.

IELTS CUE CARD – Talk about a member of your family

IELTS CUE CARD: Talk about a member of your family.

You should say:

  • Who the family member is?
  • Why do you spend so much time with them?
  • How do you spend this time?
  • And describe the family member.

Sample Answer

We can choose who we spend time with and who we surround ourselves with, except for the people whom we were born among: our family. Whether we like it or not, the family will always be present throughout our lives and play a critical role; even in absentia, they will leave a memorable impression.
I honestly do not manage to spend all that much time with my extended family due to living away from them in the city. The only family I truly know is my parents’. Up until recently, both of my parents used to work office jobs; after quarantine, they too were forced to stay at home like me. I found myself spending more time with my mother, though. During our roof walks post-dinner, we had debates on academic and practical subjects, both. It’s fascinating to be able to debate two different worldviews.
Mum and I would help each other out with our respective pastimes; mine would be drawing and hers would be writing. I introduced my mother to some new books which I thought she would like; to my delight, she loved them, especially Red Notice by Bill Browder. She told me all about the intricacies in that book, and I, in turn, showed her the fantasy universes of Percy Jackson and The Hunger Games too.
My mother comes off as a very uptight and strict person when you first meet her, someone you should not trifle with. However, it is after knowing her for my whole life I can indeed confirm that she does indeed smile, and she does, in fact, have a silly side too. Sadly, she is not ticklish, but one cannot have everything in their lives. I love both of my parents dearly, and I am very privileged to have such savvy and understanding people in my life.
Useful words and their meanings
In absentia When you do something in absentia, you’re not physically present.
Uptight nervous, anxious, or worried
Trifle with someone or something to act without seriousness or respect toward someone or something.
Privileged having special rights or advantages that only a small number of people have
Savvy used to describe someone with practical knowledge and ability

We have already talked about family. Let us have a look at some more of the questions that can be asked.

Speaking Part 3

Q1. What are the things that you like to do together as a family?
Q2. Do you get along well with your family?
Q3. Are people in your country generally close to their family?
Q4. What kind of families are most common in your hometown?
Q5. How important is family bonding for you?
Q6. What is your favourite memory with your family members?

What are the things that you like to do together as a family?

Apart from talking about what is going on in our lives, I think eating and travelling are the two things we love to do together. To an extent, it brings the feeling of togetherness among all of us. It is at dinnertime that we laugh together and bring out issues or share things with each other. Also, travelling is a time we enjoy together. Exploring a new place with people who care for you is always nice and warming.

Do you get along well with your family?

We do have our sister-and-brother fights, but apart from that, yes, we all enjoy each other’s company and really love and respect each other.

Are people in your country generally close to their family?

India is a very homely, or you could say ‘culturally rich’, country. So, we have the culture of children living with their parents and celebrating festivals together. To an extent, all of this makes people of our country close to their family.

What kind of families are most common in your hometown?

With the coming of globalisation, people in my country have migrated a lot. So, most of the people leave their towns or cities to work in big cities like Bangalore or Delhi. This has led to people living in nuclear families. However, there are still people who live in joint families.

How important is family bonding for you?

I have grown up in an environment close to the family and have shared my sorrows and happiness with them. To me, family bonding and support are important. My work requires me to travel a lot, and there are times when I feel alone, but the support of the family is the only thing that keeps me going.

What is your favourite memory with your family members?

I remember going to our hometown with my family after a long time. It was a nice retreat because I went to the places I have grown up with people I love the most. We went on to visit the nearby temples and spent time with our extended family.

IELTS CUE CARD – Talk about an animal you like

IELTS CUE CARD : Talk about an animal you like.

You should say:

  • What this animal is
  • What is special about this animal?
  • How it looks like
  • And explain why you like this animal.

Sample Answer

Animals are eclectic creatures; they go all the way from the very friendly and domesticated to the lethal and feral. They come in different shapes, sizes and colours. Even animals of a single species are incomparable to their counterparts due to the sheer number of differences.

Today I will talk about one of my all-time favourite animals: the horse. Like other animal species, horses too come in different sizes and colours. Shetland ponies have a stockier body, round shape, thick fur, and short, stubby legs; they are not much used in athletic pursuits. Arabian horses, on the other hand, are taller and sleekly built with light bones; they are used exclusively for racing. Now, both of these are, scientifically speaking, horses, but they are oh so different in appearance, nature and purpose.

Despite differences in their physical appearance, all horses have some things in common which earn them the top spots among my favourite animals. For one, their movements. Whenever a horse moves, I can’t help but admire the powerful muscles bulging and gliding beneath their coats; the sheer potential power they have in each step is breathtaking. The way they move is more elegant than most humans can ever hope to achieve. Their might is undeniable. For another, they are loyal, intelligent, and empathetic creatures. The bonds that a rider and horse may form are second to none. All these unique qualities make horses special to me.

Speaking part 3 follow-up questions:

Q.1 Do people in your country keep animals at home?

Animals like cows, buffaloes and goats are domesticated widely in the countryside. In fact, livestock rearing provides sustainable livelihoods to millions of people living in rural areas.

Q.2 Do you think pets are important?

Yes, certainly. Pets can bring love and companionship into our lives. Many studies have shown that keeping pets reduces our stress levels, thereby improving our health and well-being.

Q.3 Do animals have rights?

Humans use animals for food and related by-products, farming and a variety of other uses. Every day millions of different types of animals are killed for food globally. Just by looking at these figures, I’d say that these creatures should at least have the right to live. But who cares? Laws are made for protecting animals, but they don’t work in reality.

Useful words and their meanings
Eclectic consisting of different types, methods, styles, etc.
Feral A feral animal or plant is one that lives in the wild but is descended from domesticated specimens.
Autonomy the right of an organization, country, or region to be independent and govern itself
Livestock rearing raising of animals for use or for pleasure

IELTS CUE CARD – Describe a place where you like to spend time alone

IELTS CUE CARD: Describe a place where you like to spend time alone.
You should say :
  • Where is that place?
  • Why do you like to go there?
  • What activities do you do there?

Sample Answer

I am an introverted person; therefore, most of my time is spent alone. It’s not that I hate people, but I guess I don’t get along with social gatherings and stuff. I believe this is one of the reasons why I don’t have friends. My room is my dearest place to spend time doing my favourite things like reading, playing guitar, and sleeping.
Since I come from a huge family, it’s not always easy to maintain privacy, so to find a peaceful place, I have discovered a place that is nestled with lush green forests, and only a handful of people go there. It is a kind of place where time seems to stand still and the hectic outside world disappears. It’s a place of calm and seclusion where I can unwind, think, and just be among the simplicity and serenity of the natural world. This place has everything that a person who admires serenity and tranquillity needs.
Whenever I go there, I practise sketching and even play music. To my surprise, I made a friend there who shares the same taste in reading and music. Her name is Rachel; she belongs to Gujarat and has recently shifted here along with her family and cute little puppy Max. He is a bunch of happiness all together; playing with him makes me forget all my worries. I love this place a lot, and I always pray that it stays unrevealed to people; otherwise, it would be ruined.
Word Meaning Sentence
Handful of A small number (of some body/something) Only a handful of people came to the meeting.
serenity State of being calm I admire her serenity in the midst of so much chaos.
