IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Recent Shop

Living in cities or towns, we often see many shops opening up nearby. Gone are the days when there was only one shop and the entire clan was dependant on it. We now notice the opening of multinational brands and the coming of shopping malls in countries worldwide. The world has now truly become a global village. This time, we are looking at an IELTS cue card that asks you to describe about a recent shop that opened up in your city or town.

Describe a shop that recently opened in your city/country.

You should say:
  • what its name is
  • where it is
  • who the typical customers are

and say if you have bought anything from the shop. Why/Why not?

SAMPLE ANSWER ONE

New shops and international brands are paving their way into my country. Although India itself has got numerous outlets of international brands but they are mostly confined to metropolitan cities. In recent years, my city has seen an influx of international brands and one such company unveiled a new store recently.

It’s a new Lacoste outlet that has recently been inaugurated. With the traditional crocodile sign put on the clothing is a signature trademark and it is very easily recognisable.
The store is located in the heart of the city, right next to the cinema plaza. The store had been under construction for a while. It was only that when they put up ads in the newspaper saying “the world’s most favourite brand is now in your city” that’s when people realised, it is about time we put the rumours to bed.

The clothing company is a well known in the world and the quality of their products is second to none. It is a French company and all of their clothes are imported so majority of its customers are individuals that have selective taste in clothing or I can say it caters to a very posh crowd. The entire range of clothes is expensive but that crocodile emblem on the merchandise in itself tells a different story and is totally worth it.

Yes I did buy a shirt from the store. I always wanted one and they had an inaugural discount of extra 20 percent. From the moment I stepped inside the store, I had my eyes set up on a navy shirt with a white logo on the right pocket. It was very expensive but then again good things don’t come cheap. I have one more shirt to add to my party wear collection and when I do wear it, trust me I set fire to the rain.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO

I presently reside in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is a beautiful city and has recently become one of the cities aimed at becoming a metropolitian city. This decision has led to many changes happening in my town. We saw the coming of Ola and Uber and then several constructions, like flyovers etc. But, along with it, there has been an upsurge in the number of shops in my town.

One recent shop that opened up in the center of the town and fascinated a lot of crowds is the “The Baby Shop”. It has a three-storeyed building with an amazing infrastructure and is the first shop in our city to be open 24 * 7. It is a great shop for babies with a wide range of items available necessary for babies until 10 years of age. Right from, cradle to clothes, play pen and including toys like a fighter plane etc.

Besides children, parents expecting a child or the ones with children below 10 years often visit the place. What is more beautiful and satisfying about the shop is the easy accessibility of items and a very kind staff. It was only a few weeks back that I had to visit the shop for getting a gift for my nephew. My nephew loves clothes and toys and I bought them from “The Baby Shop” at very reasonable prices. I still remember the smile she gave me.

cradle – small bed for a baby

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Colleague

Most of our lives, we are surrounded by people. No matter the kind of personality that we have, extrovert or introvert, we often need to interact with people. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about a person you work or study with.

You have one minute to prepare your notes.

Describe a person you work/study with. You should say –
  • who is that person?
  • how did you meet him or her?
  • what do you like and dislike in the person?

also, explain, how has the person an impact on your life?

SAMPLE ANSWER

I have been working for a multinational company for past two years and working there gave me an opportunity to meet a multitude of people. People from different regions, traits and ambitions. There are few friends that I made and many colleagues I am on good terms with. I would like to talk about Sourabh, my senior under whom I worked for almost one and a half year. He was my manager and also my confidant.

He has been one of the best persons I have met through my career till now.  What I really admire about him are his ethics. He has a very strong value system. I remember a few months ago, he was talking to his friend and in the conversation, told him that parents are the most important people in our lives. He is the kind of a person who lives and let live. I really admire his humour. Even in the toughest of times when the entire team has succumbed, I have seen him smiling and handling things better.

The only times I remember not being able to connect with him well is when he had to do things he might not have done personally, just because of professional pressure. Sourabh unknowingly has been a great mentor for me through my working days. In times of troubles, I have always found myself thinking what if Sourabh was in my position, and things have really gone well for me.

Vocabulary

multitude – a large number of people or things.

confidant – a person with whom one shares a secret or private matter, trusting them not to repeat it to others.

ethics – moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity.

succumbed – fail to resist pressure, temptation, or some other negative force.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

I am a student currently in my High School and have few close friends with a spirit of companionship with almost all. Out of all the people, the one person I spend most of my time is, Vipula. She has been one of the finest people I have met throughout my school years. We met by chance on our school bus. We shared the same route for our house and one day sat in the same seat. Being new to the school, both of us did not have many friends and in the moments of aloofness, gelled well.

She is a basketball champion by now and teaches me biology. I help her with Math and we are hoping to have better scores in our High school. What I really like about her is she always finds happiness. Even in the darkest of her times, I have rarely seen her falling. Her favourite quote being, if I can solve the problem, what is the issue. If I cannot solve it, then also.

But, sometimes she tries to handle all of it alone and it does bring issues between us. Vipula has been one of those important people who has taught me the importance of teamwork and being calm. She is truly a gem in my life.

Vocabulary

companionship – a feeling of fellowship or friendship.

IELTS Speaking cue card: A failed plan

Talk about a plan you’ve been making for long but it didn’t work.

You should say

  • what the plan is
  • how long have you been making it
  • why it did not work
  • and explain when you think you can get it done.
SAMPLE ANSWER

Travelling has been one of the things I have on my to-do list for a long time. Visiting new places and meeting people is what gives me a kick and I wish to do it. Living in a northeastern state of my country, there are many things I can explore and have on my list.

A few years back, I hitch-hiked to a place near Bhubaneswar, Puri. Although the trip was amazing, I felt it could have been better in the company of my loved ones. Since then, I have been trying to convince my friends to travel along with me to places like Kolkata, Vishakapatnam. But, we all are failing in keeping up with the exciting plans that we make. Sometimes because of work pressure, other times because of priority differences.

I remember having extended the plan of going to Kolkata for now around 6 months. But, with the coming of new year, the resolution is to make sure that I travel more with my friends and sometimes make new friends along the journey.

Recently, I visited a travel website, make my trip, that allows people from different places to come together and enjoy new places. On telling this plan to my friends, some of them have agreed on to it. And, we are hoping to travel the east of India in the next 6 months this year.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Special days have great importance in all our lives, they make the boring and the dull and gloomy days pass by, all because of the hope for a special day. In the past few years, I have had many occasions where I felt my breath was taken away. The gratitude I felt for God and the people around me was immense. One such day was when I went to Shravenbelagola for a Jain festival.

The Jain festival happens once in 12 years and in it their God, Bahubali is showered with milk, water, and many other things. Lacs of people from across the country and worldwide come to pay tribute to the God. There are many media people from all over and it gets attended by politicians of my country.

I visited Shravenbelagola, which is 3 hours from Bengaluru, all alone. It had to be my first solo trip. Being in a completely new place, I initially was really scared, not knowing exactly where I would go or where would I stay. On the D-Day, however, I made friends, got to attend the event right from the top because of the passes they had, and free food, because it was a government event.

Coming back from the event, I saw people rushing and throwing each other to get to the top and I felt so special. It was that day I realized the importance of people in our lives. They make good things better and bad things good. Had I not made those friends, my trip may have been a failure.
