IELTS Speaking Test # Skill, you have learned successfully

IELTS Speaking Test
The speaking test in IELTS consists of three parts.
Duration 11-14 minutes
One examiner + one candidate
Part 1 (4-5 minutes): The examiner asks a number of questions about familiar topics such as the candidate’s studies/work, hobbies, interests etc. Normally 8-9 questions are asked in this part.
Part 2 (3-4 minutes): The examiner gives you a topic to talk about. The topic is written down and includes some bullet points to guide you. After a minute’s preparation, the candidate speaks for two minutes on the topic provided by the examiner.
Part 3 (5-6 minutes): The examiner and the candidate discuss some general questions based on the theme of the Part 2 topic.
In this post I will focus on Part 2 and Part 3.

Part2 Cue Card

Describe a skill (for example, driving, speed reading etc.) you have learned successfully
You should say:

What skill you have learned?

Why you learned it?

Who helped you learn it?

and explain what helped you to become good at the skill.

Sample Answer

Skills play a defining role in our life. They make us more efficient and productive. Today, I am going to talk about a skill that I learnt successfully.
Two years ago, I learnt how to drive a car. I live in the countryside and my workplace is about 20 km away from my home. When I started working, either my father or my sister used to drop and pick me up at the office every day. But, after a while, this daily duty became an unnecessary burden for them as they have their own jobs. In general, I am a confident person but this dependency on others affected my self-esteem. So, I immediately decided to take driving lessons.
There is a well-known driving school near my home. I contacted the school and took two months’ training. The trainer was very friendly. He always gave clear instructions and prepared me really well for the driving test. Later, I successfully passed the driving test and obtained my driving license.
Driving is a skill which takes a lot of time to master. But, once you overcome the fear of driving on crowded roads, it gives you immense satisfaction and pleasure. The same thing applies to me. To improve my car driving skills, I drove daily to my office and to other nearby locations. I used to make mistakes at the beginning but I always took a note of them and tried not to repeat them.
In short, my commitment, perseverance and dedication helped me become a skilled driver.

Q. 1 Can you compare the skills that are important nowadays with the skills that were important 20 or 30 years ago?
Sample answer: Twenty/thirty years ago, traditional skills like weaving, knitting, sewing and earthenware pottery making were an integral part of people’s lives. But, nowadays, computer, management, language, and data analysis skills are given more importance.
Q. 2 What skills are valued most in your country?
Sample answer: My country is a developing nation and there are many sectors such as banking, manufacturing, information technology and tourism etc. In almost every sector, basic computer skills and communication skills are of utmost significance.
Q. 3 What kind of skills might be important in the future?
Sample answer: This is an interesting question. Considering the amount of data generated every day, I think that in the future the demand for research and data analysis skills will rise considerably.

Q. 4 What qualities does a good trainer need to have?
Sample answer: In my opinion, a professional trainer should have a wide range of skills. Firstly, he/she should possess an in-depth knowledge of his field. Secondly, he/she must be friendly, punctual and impartial. Thirdly and most importantly, he/she should lead by example.
Q. 5 Why should companies invest a lot of money in training?
Sample answer: Training programs are vital for the growth of a company. A company with the trained staff is more likely to outperform its competitors. Regular training sessions upgrade the knowledge and skills of employees which in turn leads to higher productivity and profitability. For this reason, many companies spend a major part of their annual budget on different types of trainings.
Q. 6 Do you think schools and universities prepare young people well for the future employment?
Sample answer: Not really. I think that secondary schools and universities in most parts of the world focus too much on conventional academic subjects like mathematics, science and history etc. Professional skills are often neglected. This imbalance between theoretical and practical knowledge has a negative impact on the future job prospects of young people.

When a person is happy he or she is more likely to take better decisions and do right things with his or her life rather than comparing it to the time when he or she is not so excited about his or project. There have been many times I have felt happy about my life, but if I had to talk about the happiest situation, it was when I got placed in a leading company. It was after a lot of perseverance that I landed myself into the company. I joined around three years back and it has been an amazing ride since I have joined the company.

Actually, I consider myself to be a hard-working individual, and I have proved it time and again. One day my seniors organised a meeting with all the associates and told us about a very difficult assignment which needed to be worked upon for a client. We received different task allocations and started working upon them. After poring into the data and figuring out the solutions, I finished my work and submitted it. I then proceeded to help my colleagues and played my part in finishing the project before the deadline. During all this time, our seniors kept a close eye on our individual progress.

Now at the next meeting, we were told that our work was good and the client appreciated our efforts. My manager called me over and proceeded to announce that everyone was pleased by my exceptional work ethics, and they have decided to promote me as a team leader. My joy knew no bounds at that moment and I thanked everyone profusely. I felt satisfied knowing that my efforts helped me achieve success. It is indeed a great feeling when your endeavor pays off with such results.

Describe a time when you helped someone.

Sample Answer:

I would like to talk about this one time from my childhood, when I helped someone, when I didn’t even know it was a form of help.
If I recon it correctly the year was 1993, I must have been in my 3rd or 4th year of school. One night we (me, my sister and our parents) were returning from some ones place, on the way, there was a religious procession going on and we kids were offered some edibles. I was still holding my goodies, when I saw an old man sitting by the road, a few houses away. I gave him those goodies to eat. While he was eating the food, I felt really good. From that night onwards I made it a point, while going to my school I would find him and give him my tiffin to eat. I did it for some time before my parents found it out and stopped me from doing it.
I loved to see his smiling face, while eating the food. I know it must not have been much for him. He would always bless me, like a lot. I guess I am what I am today because of people like him. (202 Words)

Restaurants are the place where people go to have food, spend some quality time with their loved ones, get a break from the daily routine and enjoy the hard work they have done. With time, more and more people have started visiting restaurants, for parties, corporate meetings or just to while away time. Let us today have a look at some of the questions related to restaurants.

Cue card – Describe your favourite restaurant
You should say:

Where it is located?

What it looks like from inside and outside?

What kinds of food they serve?

And explain what makes this restaurant so special to you and others.

Sample Answer

Although I am not fond of eating out due to my healthy lifestyle every now and then I do go out to a restaurant located in south Delhi by the Delhi University campus. The restaurant is called Echoes and it is a great place to be at. It serves different types of cuisine and their milkshakes are quite popular. It has great vibes and the crowd that visits is uni going so the menu gets updated quite regularly according to the market demands.

It’s quite spacious and is spread across a single floor. The restaurant has a very upmarket feel to it and the interiors are very well done. It has various paintings hanging on its walls but the most striking feature is the Hogwarts themed lamps that hang from the ceiling of the restaurant. At night when they light up, it feels like you are sitting at Hogwarts and having your dinner. From the outside, it is a bit congested but the service they provide makes up for everything else.

They serve different kinds of cuisine. The Chinese there is quite popular as it’s very delicious. They have their own versions of the popular street food which is quite famous among the college going students. The price is reasonable and they are busy almost all times. It’s better if one calls in before they visit the place as they are fully booked and getting hold of a table especially at weekends can be quite a challenge. I was particularly impressed by their spirits collection as it is one of the best that I have seen in my country.

There are numerous reasons as to why I love this place. The ambiance is great and the owner of the place is a very thoughtful person. The staffs that work there are deaf and dumb so you communicate with them through sign language or using a pen and paper. In this cruel world it is the small things that make the difference and by providing employment to such people he has surely made a positive impact in the society. Not to mention I had my first date here with my wife so yeah it’ll always be special to me.

What is your favorite restaurant near the place that you live?

My favorite restaurant is “Dolphin”. I really like it for the food and the ambiance of the restaurant. It is that restaurant that I used to visit a lot with my friends and have made some great memories in that place. The best part about that restaurant is that they have got great service and is a perfect blend of homemade food and the one prepared by the cook.

What is the best restaurant you have ever eaten?

I think the best restaurant would be “The Hub”. There are many places that I have visited and so many restaurants that I have gone to, but there is this something unique about it. They have got electric candles and even if you are going during the day, you get a feel of a candle light dinner. The food is amazing and the staff really polite.

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant abroad? What was it like?

I have never been to abroad, so I am not very sure of it. But, I have read about some restaurants of abroad. One of them is Alexander’s Steakhouse in Cupertino. It is regarded as one of the best restaurants with a person telling you patiently about the menu and making sure you have a great meal.

What do you think makes a restaurant great?

I think apart from the food, the ambiance and the service or the staff makes a restaurant great. It is good to have great food, but then the seats in which you are sitting, the lighting of the restaurant, the staff and the music the restaurant chooses to play has a very important role in making a restaurant great.

Do you prefer to eat at your parents’ house or a restaurant?

I prefer my parent’s house because no matter how great a restaurant is, nothing can replace the feeling of eating at home with your parents and siblings. The talks and the laughs, it is all so great to be replaced.

What is the worst restaurant you have eaten?

I remember, eating at this restaurant at Puri, the name I have forgotten. But, it was looking average from outside so we just went in. When we looked at the menu, the food was expensive but we thought that it might be good so we ordered it. The food was really bad for starters but when my friend ordered for Kebab, instead of giving that they brought Fried rice. When he asked to change the order, the staff asked him to eat it because there is no other option available. Not only he had to pay, but also eat something he did not like. The only reason we sat there eating was that there were no other restaurants and we were really hungry.

What is the strangest restaurant you have heard of?

Well, the weirdest restaurant that I have ever heard of is Modern Toilet in Taipei, Taiwan. The restaurant has everything in the form of a Toilet. So, you could see bowls in the form of flush, seats in the form of flush and then the ice creams in the form of shit. Sometimes, I wonder how do people even go and eat there.

How do you feel about theme restaurants?

I think theme restaurants are really great because there is so much specialty associated with them. There is nothing general and one can feel so great about it. There is a story to tell there, a reason behind everything that is placed there. I think they are the perfect paradise for tourists and travelers.

Do you prefer darker or brighter interiors for restaurants? Why?

I prefer darker interiors. I am not very sure but I think dim lights bring along with them that calmness and smoothness of candlelight dinner. It calms the mind and it becomes so much more easy to listen to the other person and have a lovely conversation.
