IELTS Writing Task # Essay

Food travels thousands of miles from producers to consumers. Some people think that it would be better for the environment and economy if people ate only the local food produced by farmers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ANSWER-    

With the growth of supermarket sectors all over the world, customers can find international food at one stop. Some people think that food imported from distant lands has a negative effect on the local economy and culture. They are of the opinion that localities must prefer eating regionally by farmers and local producers. In my opinion, more popularity of regional food will help in the business and employment locally.

Local foods are beneficial not only for the economy but for the environment as well. Primarily, locally grown food items are more nutritious and are free from artificially added preservatives. Regional food are much healthier and fresher as it does not consume transit facilities unlike the processed grocery food items hence saving the fossil fuels too. For example, local fruits and spices are tastier and organic than the chemically processed ones. Farmers too can get international opportunities and recognition thereby attracting tourism and promoting agritourism.

On the contrary, with globalization, consumers get the privilege to enjoy food from all over the world without travelling to far off places. People can choose from a variety of options available in the market. Like for instance, consumers of western cultures can easily enjoy Indian food at their local super markets and vice versa. Getting to taste international food helps locals to understand the culture and build international brotherhood among nations. In addition, export and import for various food items bring a positive effect on the economy of the countries.  

It can be concluded that consuming regionally produced food has economic and environmental benefits. Though we can get our hands on foreign food items easily, promoting local food would help local market gain profits.

Some people think that zoos are cruel and all zoos should be closed. However, others think that zoos are useful for protecting rare animals. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

SAMPLE ANSWER- 

All the wildlife is in a fight for survival. It is a precious gift of God to this planet which needs to be safeguarded from natural and man-made activities. Some people are of the opinion that zoos need to be banned in order to conserve extinct wildlife while others find zoos helpful in preserving rare species. From my personal standpoint, it is an urgent need to ban zoos that ill-treat wildlife for their own profitable purpose. 

Zoos can be unsuitable habitats for wild animals therefore, they must be abolished. Some people consider zoos to be a cruel environment where the zoo owners camouflage their cruelty with conversation claims. Wild animals are supposed to remain in their natural habitat as in the zoos they are forced to breed or entertain the crowd, due to which they fall sick. Several wild creatures, who stay at these artificial environments do not behave like their usual counterparts. To give you an idea, polar bears can hardly walk for 5 meters when kept in a cage whereas in their Artic home they roam for hundreds of kilometers.

From another point of view, zoos provide a safe place to rehabilitate potentially lost species. Man-made activities like construction of factories by cutting down forests and hunting make wildlife’s natural habitat not a safe place to live. Many animals in zoos are well treated and live longer than they would in the wild. Like for instance, Project Tiger in India helped to conserve our national animal. Breeding programs are also practiced at zoos in order to save the endangered species.  

Taking everything into account, zoos need to treat wildlife with care and stop manhandling them for entertainment purposes. Those wildlife sanctuaries and zoos that are seen mishandling wild animals should be banned immediately.

Public health responsibility of the government or the individual?

Some people think that public health in a country can be improved by the government making laws regarding nutritious food. Others, however, think that health is a matter of personal choice and responsibility. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

SAMPLE ANSWER-  

A healthy nation is a wealthy nation. This essay will discuss whether health care is the duty of the government or the individual himself. According to me, the government can be held responsible for the public health care centers while at a personal level, individuals must take care of their health.

The government can improve the health care facilities of a nation. The state can take adequate measures to ensure decent health care infrastructure. Officials can also promote healthy communities, like for instance, promotion of free eye care or dental checkup organized by the state. Awareness about communicable diseases and their prevention is also the duty of the government. Keeping our environment clean is not the sole duty of the individuals but of the government as well. The distribution of national resources on health care centers scarcely can be problematic for society as a whole.

Under other conditions, health is the ultimate responsibility of the individual. Factors like hereditary conditions and inactive lifestyle of humans do contribute largely. Even if the illness is self- inflicted or not, one must take care of their health without depending upon the government. There are some measures that individuals can implement in order to improve their health. For instance, activities like smoking and intoxication can be avoided by the people themselves in order to enjoy an active lifestyle.

In the final analysis, to contribute for the nation and be responsible citizens, we need to have a certain level of health and well-being. For me personally, well-being is an individual’s responsibility and they must not fail to assume this responsibility. Though the Government needs to provide adequate healthcare facilities, as a basic human right, people must not take advantage of the welfare facilities provided by the nation.
