History Today

The idea of taking back ‘control’ has come to dominate political debate in Britain. Much of the discussion has centred on the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU). Indeed, the aim of achieving control substantially shaped the referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU. For the victorious Leave campaign, the promise of this kind of power resides in the restoration of sovereignty. Yet the analysis is based on a misunderstanding. While the future of Britain outside the EU is obviously hard to determine, one thing is certain: the possession of sovereignty does not guarantee the exercise of control.

The modern debate about sovereignty began with the French thinker Jean Bodin (1530-96). Having joined the Carmelite brotherhood as a monk in his early manhood, Bodin was released from his vows in 1549 and then opted to study law at the University of Toulouse. Much of his education involved attention to Roman law and included the humanistic study of classical texts in political and legal philosophy. It was out of these materials that Bodin developed his conception of supreme power.

In his most famous work, the Six Books of the Commonwealth, which originally appeared in French in 1576, Bodin presented a definition of sovereignty. He claimed that it was ‘the absolute and perpetual power of a commonwealth, which the Latins call maiestas [majesty]’. Later in his text, Bodin made clear that the Romans had yet other terms for sovereignty, summum imperium (ultimate authority) being conspicuous among them. Yet, while the Romans, like the Greeks and the Hebrews, had a conception of supreme authority, Bodin believed that they had not fully understood its implications. Above all, he insisted, they had failed to grasp that the highest power of command was indivisible. It could not be shared among competing powers in the commonwealth.

This meant in effect that, while a state might possess a mixed system of government, it could not be based on a system of ‘shared’ sovereignty. This insight has proved confusing to posterity, above all to admirers of the American constitution: since the United States can be seen as a mixed regime, surely its sovereignty is divided among the different organs of state? This thought was later used to characterize the European Union, too, which is similarly taken to exemplify the ‘pooling’ of sovereignty.

Let us now have a look at the meaning of the difficult words stated above.

IELTS Speaking Sample Question # Effects Of Television

Television, the idiot box, is one of the most popular invention in human history. No matter how many times people have tried to bring out the disadvantages of television, rarely has anyone seen a big affect on this industry. With times when there was only one channel being aired, to now when there are several channels and then so many serials, let us today have a look at some of the questions related to effects of television.

Do you think that TV makes people lazy?

Anything when done in access surely has its down affects and television is one of them. Watching it only for some time, can give refreshment but if one watches it for like forever, it surely makes you lazy because then there are so little activities that you can do.

Do you think too much time is spent watching TV?

I believe yes, there are lot of people who watch TV for more than 3 hours a day and in the age that we are living, with internet, there is so much more a person can learn by simply switching on the Internet. If a person chooses to watch Television for simply passing out time, there is not much that can be achieved. Also, there are some kids who after coming back home, directly switch on TV rather than changing. These things surely make the habits and do affect the person.

Do you think TV make a person passive?

Television has been regarded as a passive form of entertainment because there is no brain applied while watching television, also one need not to be very attentive while watching internet. With most of the senses not being used actively, if one watches lot of television, I think it surely does makes a person passive.

Does TV take away a person’s ability to think for himself or herself?

I am not very sure of this because it is not television that takes away anyone’s ability. It is what the person decides to do in his or her life. If a person chooses to simply watch television 24/7, there are more chances that he or she cannot make decisions because that is not what he or she is used to. However, if someone watches television for entertainment while doing other activities as well, there is not much harm that can be done.

Do you think that TV prevents people from communicating?

There are two sides to it. It can even prevent people from communicating or make the communication going. So, if someone watches only television and refuses to talk to anyone else, it does blocks away the communication, but then there are people who when meet each other talk about the stories in the television. They discuss on what is right and all about the characteristics of their favorite stars. In that sense, surely TV makes people communicating.

What do you think of TV shows that are designed to “discover new talent?”

Too an extent they do help finding new talent, because people from different places come to display their talents, but then with so many of them coming in, I doubt their integrity. There have been news where these shows asked for money to select a particular individual and then there is this public voting that takes place. Often in this, the most talented gets eliminated.

If you couldn’t watch TV at home but had to stay there, what would you do?

I would read novels because that is one thing I love more than anything in this world. Or may be a newspaper or anything to read.

Could you live without TV for a week?

Yes, I can. I remember there was a time I could not live without it for an hour, but recently I have stopped watching television.

Do you like watching TV alone or with your family?

If ever, I like watching television with my family because then you can laugh together at the jokes or make some jokes at the stupid things happening. Also, there is nothing much better than fighting for the remote with your siblings, making pacts and then breaching them.

Who decides what to watch: the parent or the child?

Until a certain age, it is the parent who decides what a child should watch, but I think after certain time, nothing can stop an individual from doing things that he or she prefers or loves to do.

IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Gambling

Gambling is when one completely trust on their luck and go out to play a game. The game can even let you win lot of fortune, as has happen with many, but can even make you lose everything. No matter how many stories have been present, of the people who have lost everything in gamble there are still many who do gambling. Let us today, have a look at some of the questions related to gambling.

Apart from the obvious financial problem what other consequences can occur as a result of excessive gambling?

I believe the major effect that gambling brings along is in the area of mental health and relationship. The sudden jerk of lot of money and then a scarcity of it, can lead to lot of mental issues, like depression and anxiety. It also ruins relationships, because a person who gambles often, tends to become very addictive to it, leading to tasteless conversations with the loved ones.

Who suffers the most from a gambling problem?

In my opinion, the person who gambles and his or her family or the loved ones are the people who are most affected through gambling. Other than these, gambling also causes trouble to the games and the government.

Apart from the obvious reason of winning money, why do people gamble?

Gambling brings along with it lot of rush. So, there are days when one can just go out and party hard and then days when there is no food to eat. For some it might be irritating, but for the most part, I think there are people who love living life at edge.

Why is gambling addictive?

I think the main reason of gambling being so addictive is because, it gives lot of rush. There is a sudden excitement that it brings along with itself. Lot of mind is applied and then you have to just trust your luck and then go on. The entire moment and feeling of gambling is too exciting to resist. But, then I think there are people who win lot of fortunes with gambling and it is the need of more that makes people addictive even when they start loosing.

What kinds of people do you think are more prone to developing a gambling problem?

I think anyone who likes living rush, who wants to earn more money and live lavishly can go for gambling. The initial victories make people addictive.

Do you regard putting money in machines for prizes, at an amusement arcade, as gambling?

Too an extent yes they are. Surely, they are not the very serious ones, but yes. When you put your money or time without knowing the results, it is all gambling.

Is there such a thing as good and bad luck? If so, what is it?

There is this quote that I have read, ” More hard work that I do, the more luck I seem to have”. And I do believe in that. Because when one works hard for something, their sub conscious gets trained for that goal. So, we are able to take chances, and things that might take us forward towards our goal come in fore front.

Does luck have anything to do with winning?

I think luck is just a word invented by people who could not figure out that it is pure hard work that helped people win. Because, mostly when people win they rarely talk of the hard work and the sacrifices they did for that win. So, most people regard it as mere luck.

Do you think it’s possible for a gambling addict to kick the habit?

It depends on the individual for the most part, but I believe that yes, it is possible to kick off that habit when someone realizes that the money earned through hard work is way more better than the one which is earned through gambling. When one understands the importance of having a balanced life, with more peace, a person is more likely to let this habit go.

Do you think that those who own and run casinos are criminals or conmen?

I think definitely not. They are just running a business which gives them profits but then if these casinos share their profit with the government I think it will be much more better. It is only when they don’t share the profit, I think they tend to do something that is not very ethically right.

Does the national lottery encourage gambling?

Too an extent, we can say yes. When people start winning these lottery is when they go for the bigger call. Because, they learn that money can be earned easily and one need not to die or take lot of pains for it.
