IELTS Cue Card Describe your first day at school

Describe your first day at school

  • Where it was?
  • What happened?
  • Explain how you felt on that day
Sample Answer

Though I have a vague recollection of my past, still if I go down the memory lane I can recall few incidents of my life.
When I first began schooling, I was admitted in a play-school. My parents had pre-planned everything beforehand. However, I do not know the reason why, but there was some problem in my documents, and there was a lot of paperwork that my father had to do that morning. My father was quite upset about it, as it was the school management’s fault. This incident is the only first thing which comes to my mind whenever I think of my first day. My school was in Dehradun and I was approximately four years old. I also remember that during the first day, an interclass competition was held, so that the students could interact with each other and make new friends. So it was a race where the kids were supposed to hold a spoon in their mouth, and put a lemon in the spoon and walk fast. We were not supposed to run, but it was a fast walking race. I participated in that and I was declared the third winner. It was a very proud feeling because when I came back home, my father was happy to see that. I studied for seven years in that school. Those were the most memorable years of my life.

Follow Up Questions:

Q1. Do you think students should be taken to school by their parents or go by themselves?
Answer: Children in primary classes should not go to school by themselves. Either the parents should drop them, or they should arrange a van or bus. Children in high school and secondary school can go on their own.

Q2. Should children rely on their parents or be independent?
Answer: Children should rely on their parents till they are studying. Once they complete their studies, they should start earning and become independent and support their parents.

Q3. How can children become more independent?
Answer: Children can become more independent if parents let them take small decisions on their own when they are very young. If parents allow children some
freedom, then children can become independent very soon.

Q4. What is the effect if parents interfere with children’s life too much?
Answer: If parents interfere with children’s lives too much, they either become rebels or become introverts. Their personality is
snubbed, and they cannot develop to their full potential.

CUE CARD, TALK ABOUT A PERSON WHO WEARS UNUSUAL CLOTHES

Sample Answer

Fashion and clothing has always been an important part of the society. We have different dress codes for different occasions. It brings out people differently. Today I’m going to talk about one of my friend who dresses in an unusual manner. Her name is Mansi and she is a fashion blogger. She started fashion blogging with one of the most offbeat dressing sense. Her peculiar dressing sense has actually made her one of the most popular fashion model of the town.

She wears saree with jeans and long boots. Sometimes she wears a scarf as a top. She usually wears different types of hats and caps with Indian outfits which gives her a different look. She has never failed to surprise me with her eccentric appearance. Once I saw her wearing a dress made out of newspaper, she wore it for her shoot. Moreover, I have never seen her repeating her outfits. She can literally prepare an outfit from whatever is available, be it newspapers, pieces of old clothes, pillow covers, bedsheets and even towels. She has also started a small business of fashion clothing and named it “Cranky Couture”. Her fashion store is gaining popularity among townspeople.

I believe her clothing choice is quite strange yet impressive. In a short span of two years, she has gained a lot of fan following in social media due to her unique dressing style. Going offbeat always makes an individual remarkable. I’ve have never seen someone with such unusual clothing before. Her outfits are sure to turn heads. Whenever I go out with her, people look at her with eyes wide open which actually makes me proud of her and the fact how she is normalising such kind of fashion.

Follow up questions:

Q1. Do you like shopping for new clothes?
Answer: Yes Of course! I love shopping for new clothes. Buying clothes makes me happy and it is the only kind of shopping that I enjoy. I often go for shopping when I do some remarkable work and reward myself with new clothes.

Q2. About how much money do you spend on clothes a year?
Answer: I don’t remember the exact amount, but I think I usually spend around 10,000 to 15,000 Indian Rupees in a year on clothes and I believe that is the minimum amount that an Indian girl spends on her clothing.

Q3. Do people dress the same when they are depressed as they do when they are very happy?
Answer: I feel people dress up differently when they are in different moods. Such as when people are happy they wear bright and colourful clothes, and they actually try to look better than usual. For instance people are most happy when it’s their birthday or some family function, so they try to look best. On the other hand, when people are depressed, they don’t make many efforts to look good.

Q4. What do you think about men who wear earrings?
Answer: I think it is completely their personal choice to wear earrings. Fashion is all about comfort and if men are comfortable with that, we should not judge them. Fashion has no gender. Wearing earrings is their way of expressing their sense of fashion.

Write at least 250 words.

The best way to reduce crime amongst young people is to teach parents good parenting skills.
Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

The graph of crimes is on the increase nowadays. These crimes are mostly committed by youngsters, which is definitely a matter of great concern. Many people claim that this is the result of bad parenting as parents are ignorant of their kids activities. However, I disagree with the aforementioned statement and will discuss the same in this essay.

In today’s world society plays an important role in forming an individual’s mindset. Youth learn their behaviour from their surroundings. Present generation is exposed to various exploitative content on social media and internet such as aggressive video games, pornography, crime shows and lot more. I believe even movies encourage social evils as they project lead cast murdering people in name of revenge and take law in their hands which portrays them as heroic. Huge number of youth is getting involved in illegal intoxication because cinema has depicted that taking alcohol and drugs is a casual thing. There are many other social factors like unemployment, peer pressure, poverty that persuade youngsters to involve in crimes.

In conclusion, I would say that parents can only inculcate good values in their children and influence them to a certain extent. While there are other influential factors in an individual’s life such as bad company, society, social media and one’s own personal choices which plays a major role in shaping youth’s mentality. No parents want their children to be criminals and they always show them virtuous path. Hence it would be wrong to say that only good parenting skills can help reduce the crime rates of young offenders. (261 Words)

More and more people today are using computers and electronic devices to access information.
Therefore there is no need to print books, magazines and newspapers.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

Nowadays the whole world is dependent on electronic devices such as computers, laptops and mobile phone. These electronic devices have now become our necessity. Traditional newspapers, magazines and books are getting outdated gradually. I agree with the previously mentioned statement to some extent, which will be discussed in this essay.

Internet and electronic devices are blessing in today’s era. Due to advancement in technology, a huge number of people have electronic gadgets like mobile phones and computers which makes it convenient for them to gather information anytime and anywhere, for this reason, people have switched from traditional newspapers. There is plethora of information available on the internet which is just a click away. Whether it is about what is happening around the world or anything happening locally. Now we do not have to do a detailed reading of books and magazines for any information as the internet has made it faster and easier for us.

Furthermore, electronic media are eco-friendly and economical as it saves a lot of paper and cost of production of books and magazines. In addition to that, the digital information is more engaging and interesting for people as there are audio-visual presentations and target specific content which makes the experience more personalised. All these features can not be found in print media, there we can only find plain text with some pictures and graphs. Print media provides us limited information while the internet is a vast ocean of information, but this extensive information, on the other hand, makes it difficult to detect the correct knowledge.

On the whole, Print media might not be as convenient as digital media but it is still required because they are credible and authentic source of information. Before reaching us, books and newspapers go through several processes such as proofreading and editing which makes them more reliable. Hence they must not be neglected. (309 Words)
