IELTS Cue Card # AN INTERESTING ANIMAL IN YOUR COUNTRY

IELTS Cue Card # AN INTERESTING ANIMAL IN YOUR COUNTRY

India has some of the world’s most biodiverse regions. The political boundaries of India encompass a wide range of ecozones-desert, highlands, tropical and temperate forests, swamplands, plains, riverbeds, grass lands and islands. These areas have diverse flora and fauna. Let us look at the cue card that asks us to talk about an interesting animal in our country.

AN INTERESTING ANIMAL IN YOUR COUNTRY

    You should say:

  • .what is it
  • .what it looks like
  • .where it lives
  • And explain how you feel about this animal.

Although my country is home to a large variety of flora and fauna species, I would like to talk about “Tiger” which is the largest of all cat species. It is most recognizable for its pattern of dark vertical stripes on reddish-orange fur.
It has been more than 40 years since the Bengal tiger was declared as the National animal of India. It was a part of “project tiger”, an initiative launched to check the dwindling population of tigers in India. Tigers are found in different parts of Asia like India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan , Malaysia etc.

Tigers occupy a wide range of habitat types but mostly require thick cover(to provide camouflage), proximity to water and abundance of prey. It is solitary by nature and doesn’t live in prides unlike Lions. Tigers also prefer secluded den locations which may consist of caves or hollow trees. They usually confine their movements within their own territories.

Tigers are one of the most majestic and beautiful wild animals but the situation for this species is critical and requires immediate action. Thousands of tigers have been killed by the poachers for their skin, bones and teeth which are sold in the western countries at exorbitant prices.
I feel that tiger is an iconic species and its conservation should be one of the main objectives of our country. Under the “project tiger” more than 25 tiger reserves have been established in India, in order to protect these animals as much as possible. The population of tigers has increased but poaching still remains a threat. I really hope that these efforts continue in order to preserve this amazing animal. (273 Words)

FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS

Q1.So many animals are extinct nowadays. Why you think this is happening?
Ans. In my opinion, habitat destruction and hunting are the two main reasons why so many animal species are getting endangered and extinct nowadays. In order to develop cities, farmlands and industries, deforestation has been done on a massive scale which has in turn led to animal-human conflict. Also, poaching and hunting of animals is done to sell their skin, bones etc. fetching high prices in the international market.

Q2.Why do people have pets in their homes?
Ans. A lot of people in this world are animal lovers and they keep animals like dogs and cats in their homes for a simple reason that they love them, adore them and enjoy their company. These days guide dogs or assistant dogs have become members of many families. Others, who live in the countryside also keep cows, buffaloes, horses for milking and riding purposes. In India, oxen and bulls are still used in villages for farming purposes.

Q3.Earlier people used animals for their work. What do they use now?
Ans. In the past, animals were used extensively as beasts of burden all over the world. For instance, donkeys and mules carried load, elephants carried logs and oxen were used for farming. Also, horses and camels served as means of transportation. However, in today’s technologically savvy world, machines and much faster modes of transportation have taken over the role of animals. At the same time, there are certain remote locations where these animals are used even now. A clear example would be the deserts where camels are still used widely to move from one place to another.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Although, I have many friends in my life, but there is one friend of mine who is the most interesting person I have ever met in my life. She is  a techie and a writer with a knack of making jokes. I remember once we all were sitting around doing nothing much exciting and looking forward for our classes. She was reading as well and then all of a sudden stood up and started dancing to no songs.

When I looked around I noticed almost everyone noticing her. Later on, a boy came to ask her if she had gone mad and she forced him dancing him along with her. It was only minutes later on, that everyone started following them and started dancing together. After about an year, I realized why she was doing it. It was our placement time and everyone was very depressed, wondering what will be their future.

She noticed the tension in all of us and tried to loosen all of us, which she was able to do. The reason I found it interesting was because she did it not for herself but for all of us and the guts she put on to carry it, was incredible. Had I been her situation, I think I would have just cracked upon a joke or may be talked it out, but not done something as gutsy as she did.

Sample Answer One

There are many skills that require a lot of patience and interest. I am keenly interested in learning new languages as it helps us break barriers and experience different cultures and customs. It’s not easy to learn a new language as it can be something that is very different from your mother tongue and pronouncing words rightly can take years of practice.
I am very fond of Spanish culture and customs. Their excessive use of “S” sounds has always intrigued me. I went to Spain about a year ago and that’s when, I decided to learn this beautiful language. As I have recently completed my graduation and I have plenty of free time in my hand, I will be trying my hand at learning Spanish. Even though I live in a small city there are many language schools here and I’ll be taking regular classes at of those institutes.
It will be pretty difficult as my mother tongue is Hindi and we have no co-relation between the two languages. The demo classes, I took gave me an idea that it will be a daunting task but one that I’ll face with a smile on my face. I do speak English fluently but then again it has got nothing in common with the Latin languages so I’ll be spoon fed for the initial days before becoming any good at it.
Firstly, it does take a lot of time to learn a new language as adapting to new sounds and grammar is not an easy task. Various studies have shown that there is a critical period during which effective language learning takes place but at the same time for an adult like me it is a challenge. Therefore, kids are able to grasp new languages more quickly as compared to a fully grown adult. Secondly, the fact that when you learn a new language after being fluent in one or two already, your brain is not able to process it quickly as it should. It starts overriding words hence making learning even more difficult. As your lexical resource for that particular language is next to none you are not able to grasp anything quickly making the learning process a long ordeal. It is a long process and quite a difficult challenge but one that I am looking forward to the most.

Sample Answre Two

Skills are what makes or breaks a person. The more skilled an individual is the better are their chances of succeeding in life. This is what I learnt from my previous mentors. So, I have been trying out new skills for a long time. I learnt coding and then writing and also analysis. But, the one skill that I found particularly hard is writing. Writing has more flavors to it than one can think of!!

When I started to learn writing I had to work on my vocabulary and then structuring. Once both of them were done, it was then towards making sure the content is good. Moreover, there are different formats of writing, academic, blogging, general and bookish. It was only when I practiced them all for around 5 years that I did got a hold of the different forms of writing.

What is particularly difficult about writing is that you never know what will click! There never is any idea in the mind of writer. You can write the best of the blog and still not find viewers and then sometimes, something that does not satisfies you, clicks the users. Also, everyone has a unique way of writing and there is no  copy paste that an individual can do.

Sample Answer Three

Skills define an individual, the more skilled an individual is the better it is for them. Out of the different skills that I have tried to acquire, public speaking has been one of the most difficult skills to acquire for me. It has so many branches to it. So, many formats, so many customs to follow that it really seems to me as one of the most difficult skills to acquire.

There is voice modulation, stage coverage, body postures and then the content of the speech! When learning the skill of public speaking, I had to learn to interact with different individuals, because even when a person is on stage they have to make sure that the entire audience is able to interact with him or her.

I think the one thing that makes public speaking so difficult to learn is the fact that not many individuals understand that although public speaking seems like talking with many individuals, it is actually interacting with single person. Also, what is different about public speaking is the fact that it is not so much about how the person is speaking, but what he or she is sharing.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Imagination

Describe a time you needed to use imagination.

You should say:

  • what the situation was;
  • why you needed to use imagination;
  • what the difficulties were;

and explain how you felt about it.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I would like to talk about an extracurricular activity class that my father made me join during the summer holidays of class X. It was the first time I had to get out of my comfort zone and think beyond marks. We were a bunch of forty children and every day we used to have a different kind of activity. One such day, our teacher announced that we will be having a storytelling the class. In it, we were challenged to come on stage and make a story out of three words, she provided.

I was the last person to go for my story and my words were ball, pen, and books. We were supposed to speak for five minutes and I clearly remember standing one minute in absolute silence figuring out how to connect the three words and make a story. My story started off with a girl who was a cricket player and she is a bowler, her family did not support her much. So, when her parents asked her study, she would sit down and write stories about cricket or read books of renowned cricketers and then connected the ball, pen, and books in her life.

For that particular story session, I was standing there with my eyes closed and saying whatever came to my mind. Initially, the connection between the three was difficult for me to gras[. So, I picked up a word and carried on with the story. Once my turn was over, I opened my eyes and saw people cheering for me. I loved it. It was the first time someone told me that I must go on reading and be a storyteller some day. I was deliriously happy and extraordinarily excited.

I would like to talk about a time when I had to step out of my comfort zone to join a table topics contest which made me think out of the box and work flat to win it.

Toastmasters is an international organization and I had just joined when someone told me about a table topic contest. As part of it, each speaker had to come on stage and speak for 2 minutes on the topic provided by the contest chair. Each year the contest draws people from across all the clubs and it was really competitive and challenging for me. Therefore, when I was awarded the winner, I was deliriously happy.

The goal of the challenge was to speak for two minutes and portray the speech in a well-structured way. It is a competition, there were many other experienced people present and I was obviously terrified. What made me think too much about it was that it was spontaneous. So, the only thing that mattered was that moment and how well you can use it and explain your story. I woke up that day for the entire night and practiced around 100 table topics and by the end of 90th, I was broken down.

Although many congratulated me for the victory, I still believe that the moment I decided to go for practicing the 100 table topics, I had already won. The victory was just a cherry on the cake.
