Sample Answer 1

I have had conversations with a lot of people, but today, I would like to talk about a time when I got acquainted with an old person who must be around in his seventies. His name was Dalbeer Singh, and he was a retired army officer who served thirty glorious years of his life in the service of this nation.

I met him at a party where I saw him sharing his experiences with others, and people surrounding him holding glasses in their hands and laughing crazily. I felt like there was a separate party going on. When I asked my father about him, he introduced me to him once the crowd cleared. Initially, I could not talk to him as I struggled a lot at initiating conversations, so instead he started the talk by asking me about my studies and career choices. I was quite piqued by his personality, especially his lively nature at an age like that. His experiences in life were a source of great learning, not just for him but for me and everyone else around him as well. He just made me feel so comfortable that I started sharing my views quite openly without having any fear of judgement.

Even till date I ask him for the solutions whenever I am faced with adversities in life. Moreover, his optimistic attitude towards life is something I really look up to inculcate in myself. Thus, this was an old person I met recently.

Likewise, I would be sharing an experience where I got an opportunity to interact with an inspiring and cheerful personality. His name is Gajendra Rawat and he belongs to one of the most picturesque districts of Uttarakhand, which is Pauri Garhwal. My father loaded me with great excitement as he had told many interesting stories about him on the way so I was highly enthusiastic about meeting him . He is my father’s friend and had invited us to a party where my father introduced me to him and I got to know that he mentors IAS aspirants. It really intrigued me because he is an elderly person, around 60 or 65, short in height with white hair tied back in a ponytail and had a hat on. He seems to demonstrate the adage that looks can be deceptive, as he proves that right. Mr Rawat is blessed with a great sense of humour and has enormous knowledge, especially about the geography and history of the world, which charmed me a lot. Our second meeting was at his coaching centre where I shared my life goals and questions which he addressed intensely and offered pertinent  guidance.  I got to know that we both share similar interests in tracking and I  was blown away to know that he had completed one of the toughest tracks and has received many accolades from the state government. CUE CARD – Describe a person who likes to grow plants.

Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a person who likes to grow plants.

You should say:

    • Who the person is?
    • How do you know the person?
    • What type of plants does he/she grow?
    • Why does he/she grow plants?
Sample Answer

Since my neighbor is a true environmentalist, I’ve decided to talk about her. She is the only person who comes to mind when I read this cue card right away since her zest and enthusiasm for home gardening has always motivated me. She is my grandmother and is well-known in my neighborhood, because of her affinity for gardening.

She had indulged in gardening ever since she was a child. I must admit that she tends to her plants in her garden most of the time. Her entire patio and backyard were completely covered in a variety of flowers, which caught me off guard. She comes from a farming family and learns all farming skills as a young girl, including how to grow plants organically and what nutrients they require to withstand pests and illnesses. As a result, she has an extensive understanding of plants.

She cultivates a wide variety of flowers in vibrant pots of all sizes and forms. She also grew domestically useful plants, such as fruits, vegetables, and spices. Also, there is a beautiful guava tree on her lawn, and I must admit that her garden is exceptional. In addition to this, she has created other methods for growing plants in containers such as waste bins, boxes, and trays that don’t take up a lot of room. These plants can produce a good yield in addition to their outstanding development.

Whenever I used to pay a visit to her place, she would be so excited to show her small kitchen garden to me. Infact, she used to teach me as well the plethora of ways in which she used to garden like grafting, layering, division, budding and many more. I genuinely feel exhilarated every time I see her busy with her plants.

Thus, this is a person who adores growing plants.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions)
Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a person who likes to grow plants’.

Q1. Do people in India like to gift plants?
Unfortunately, it is still not a trend in my country as maintaining a plant requires a lot of hard work and effort. And people nowadays do not have much time left after a tedious work life.

Q2. Do you think kids should learn how to grow plants?
Definitely, it is a great idea to teach children how to grow plants as not only is it a fun recreational activity, but also, a great hobby to learn and grow. It also adds on to their skillset and is quite productive for their overall development. Moreover, they will stay close to nature.

Q3. What is the difference between traditional and modern farming?
There is actually a huge difference between the two. The classical method of farming was more organic, as only cow dung was used as manure in the fields, which is not the case now, as farmers today use harmful chemicals such as insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers. Although earlier people used to use ploughs to level the farm, with the advent of technology ploughing has become a less laborious job as tractors are there.

CUE CARD – Describe a movie you watched recently and want to watch again.

Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a movie you watched recently and want to watch again.

You should say:

    • When did you see this movie?
    • With whom did you see this movie?
    • What is the movie about?
    • Why do you want to watch this movie again?
Sample Answer

Well, I am a huge cinephile. So, I really treasure binge watching some good movies. But today I would like to talk about a movie which I can watch on loop. The name of the film is ‘Jab we met’, by Imtiaz Ali.  It is a romantic comedy, and the plot of the story is quite dramatic. The main cast includes Kareena Kapoor who plays the character of a jubilant girl from Punjab and Shahid Kapoor is the lead actor who acts as Aditya Kashyap, who comes from a well to do family with a giant buisness.

I first watched this movie when I was in tenth class on recommendation from one of my friends who herself was quite obsessed with the film. We watched it together at my home on my laptop. It was a two-and-a-half-hour-long movie and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. The movie was more of a roller coaster of different emotions. I felt as if my emotional floodgates were wide open because the climax was very emotional.

The movie opens with a young man who is disappointed by the circumstances he goes through in his life, while he is angry at everyone around him, he accidentally meets a young jovial girl who is quite an extrovert and is not scared of anything. She believes that her life should be driven by the choices which she makes and not what others expect from her. She is a free-spirited person who believes in enjoying life to the fullest. Meanwhile Aditya’s personality is opposite than hers. He is melancholic and has a very twisted perception of life. In the movie both the characters are seen facing certain family issues and just like that from being two strangers to being each other’s soulmate they fought against all the odds and were married happily in the end.

I want to watch this movie again, as I really relate to the Geet’s character and the way in which she shows character development from being an impulsive person to being this grown-up thoughtful lady who is mature in her approach to the adversities of life. Therefore, I really enjoy watching this movie and watch it again and again.

There is a huge difference. At home we watch films from the comfort zone of our home without having any interference whereas, at the cinema the tickets are quite expensive and there is a lot of disturbance in between. Thus, it is a sheer waste of money and time.

Q2. Do young Indians like to watch foreign movies?
Youngsters nowadays are more inclined towards Hollywood films as they contain action and drama, followed by some good audio- visual effects. I think technology contributes to the movies much more, which is what piques the attention of the audience.

A good movie is one which includes all the elements in it. It should include humor, romance, thrill and a plot twist followed by a great climax. Moreover, the cast should also be good.

CUE CARD – Describe a time you had a disagreement with someone

Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a time you had a disagreement with someone.

You should say:

    • Who was the person?
    • Why did you have the disagreement?
    • Was the issue resolved? If yes, how?
Sample Answer

Disagreements are a part of our daily life especially when it comes to our loved ones. Today I would like to delve upon a situation when I had a huge disaccord with my bosom friend, Shefali.

I vividly remember one day on a fine Saturday evening, after having our dinner we were chilling out in my room with a bunch of our few other friends, when one of them suddenly started talking about Euthanasia. And I shared my opinion by disagreeing to the mercy killing of animals to which she was quite not satisfied with my answer, and we started arguing about it. Initially it was more like a discussion but as the time passed by it turned out to be a huge argument between both of us. It continued for at least forty-five minutes when others interrupted us and asked us to calm down and politely put forth our views.

Sadly, we did not arrive at any common conclusion and agreed to disagree since we both are strongly opinionated which is what also makes her a really close pal of mine. Sometimes our obstinate personalities clash whenever there is a heated argument going on, but at the end of the day we always find our way back to each other.

Overall, this was a time when I had a disagreement with my friend.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning Sentence
Put forth Propose or present I do not shy away from putting forth my views.
Obstinate Stubborn or headstrong Riya is quite obstinate with her views on feminism.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions)
Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a time you had a disagreement with someone’.

Q1. If there is a disagreement, what do you do?
Well, I generally tend to avoid getting into arguments, especially with outsiders. Still if I do, I make sure that I do not get rude to the person, rather I leave the person with his opinion rather than trying to change it as everyone is entitled to have their own individual opinion.

Q2. Who do you think should teach children to respect- teachers or parents?
I firmly believe that it is not the responsibility of just any one of them, but rather both teachers and parents are accountable for a child’s overall behavior with every individual who is around him. Thus, schoolteachers should pay heed to their students and make sure to inculcate important values such as respecting not just elders but everyone. Moreover, parents should look after them.
