IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Intellectual

An intellectual is a person who engages in critical thinking, research, and reflection about society and proposes solutions for its normative problems. Over a period of time, we meet people who are masters of their own fields or for that matter are all-rounders. These are often the same people who push the human race, the ones who come in our lives and teach us some valuable lessons. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about a person you have encountered in your life who is the master of his or her field.

Describe someone who knows a lot about something. You should say :

  • who is the person?
  • how do you know him or her?
  • what did you learn from him/ her?

Also, explain why do you admire the person.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Over a period of few years, I have worked for various companies and in different fields. This has led me to know a multitude of people with varied interest. One such personality I chanced upon to meet was Abhinav. I met him during my stint at a Multinational company where we met over the group called Toastmasters. I had gone to attend a meeting of the club and heard him give an impromptu speech.

The speech motivated me to an extent that I joined the club. Over a period of time, he became my mentor in the journey of Public speaking. We came to know more about each other. It was through those talks that a realization dawned on me that not only was he an excellent speaker but also a really wise man. He had been through a lot in his life and yet chose always to be happy.

Over his journey, he told me about different things about public speaking. The quirks of writing complicated things in a shorter way, of giving a message and ensuring that people always have something to look forward to. He taught me the importance of words. How the same words can have an impact or be of no use.

The reason I really admire Abhinav is that he is one person who fought back his fears and won his battles. Coming from Hindi background he aced speaking in English and taught me the art of speaking well. He is the one person who in many ways taught that the best way of living life is to enjoy it, with all its problems and happiness.
