IELTS Writing task:
How to summarise the changes in a map?
- Identify the changes in the given map.
- Generally, there are five main categories of changes.
- Changes are usually related to shops, jobs, parks, entertainment, cinema, restaurant, new buildings, hotels, trees, traffic and roads etc.
- We have to use the appropriate verbs in the given categories to discuss about the changes.
Category | Appropriate verbs

1. Expansion

Enlarge, bigger, extend,
Example. Hostel area has been enlarged.(if happened in present) Or Hostel area was enlarged.(if happened in the past)

2. Removal
|
Knock down, pull down, demolish, cut down
E. Old market has been knocked down. (if happened in present) Or Old market was knocked down. (if happened in the past)

3. Introduction
|
Build, introduce, construct, erect,
Eg. A big shopping mall has been constructed. (if happened in present) Or A big shopping mall was constructed. (if happened in the past)

4. Conversion
|
Convert, make into, redevelop, turn into
Eg. The bank has been converted into a five star hotel. .(if happened in present) Or The bank was converted into a five star hotel. (if happened in the past)

5. Generalisation
|
Industrialize, modernise, urbanise
Eg. The city has been modernised. (if happened in present) Or The city was modernised. (if happened in the past) |
- We describe changes by using present perfect passive, if the changes have taken place recently or in the current year. We generally use such sentences in the first paragraph of introduction.
Eg. A new flyover has been built.
- We use the simple past passive to describe changes which have taken place, in further paragraphs.
Eg. The bank was converted into a five star hotel.
