IELTS Part 3 Speaking Questions # Study Room

Last time we talked about study room in the cue card section. Well, those of you who are preparing for IELTS must know that the third section of the speaking part is actually an extension of the cue card. So, the third part will ask you detailed questions about the cue card. This time we are looking at the questions asked in the third section related to the study room.

How does a study room helps a student?

Study room is surely one of the most important places for a growing child. I believe the better the study room is more are the chances for an individual to succeed. However, just like every individual is unique, in my opinion, the study room for every child must be different. So, if the student loves basketball, there should definitely be a section for basketball dedicated in the room. It could possibly be books on basketball or some posters of great basket ball players. A study room must always allow the individual to grow in all aspects of life. Not having a study room makes the education quite haphazard because the brain does not relate to a particular place for its work.

Do you like to study? What kinds of books do you read?

I do like studying but I prefer reading novels rather than academic books. I love reading autobiographies of great men and women. Also, I like to read about books on Indian culture. I really wish to the Indian culture to its core and be able to represent it to the world from my eye. Apart from novels, I really love reading the travel magazines. These books always have something exciting to offer.

Which do you prefer: reading or travelling? Why?

I do love reading and travelling both, but out of the two, I would say I prefer travelling more. Travelling helps an individual to grow more than reading ever does. Because, when you are reading you are reading the experiences of other individuals but when travelling one is making their own experiences and memories. One’s life I believe should be defined more by their own memories rather than living on what life could have been. Having said that, sometimes to bring the peace in my life back or to understand things better I do read, but travelling always remains the priority.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Study Room

Most of us have a study room in our house. Well, there are some who have a completely different room for study while there are some who have a corner of their house where they do study. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about your study room.

Describe your study room. You should say :

  • how it looks?
  • how much time do you spend there?
  • what according to you, an ideal study room should be?

also explain how would you like to change your study room?

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

Our house had a store room next to my bedroom which I later changed to my study room. The room is a small room with a window facing the garden of our house. Opposite to the window is where my study desk is kept, so I can always gaze outside when in stress. The room has a shelf where I keep my books and a smaller desk where I keep all the frequent things. Like, if I am reading a novel, it will be kept on the desk. But, if I have completed reading it, I would probably keep it back to my shelf.

The room is painted white in colour except the wall opposite to my desk. We have painted it in dark purple colour because of two reasons. One, it is my favourite colour. Second, it brings a sense of achievement, luxury and yet calmness in my life. My most of the time after office is spent there! Either I would be reading a novel there or preparing my speeches. According to me, an ideal study room is the one where a person can study calmly. So, it should be far away from all the distractions like television. Also, I think having a window is very important because it gives a person the time to think when in stress. Even a mirror also helps. Because, sometimes when you have to learn something or practice it one needs the help of a mirror.

I do love my room but I would like to have a mirror in my room so that I can practice my speeches well.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

Our house has two floors and my study room is in the ground floor which makes it isolated and so a better place to be in. The room is a big room with two parts to it, one where my study material is kept and the other where a bed is placed. So, in case I wish to sleep I can doze off there. The room has a big window, opposite to which my study table is kept. The room has two cupboards where I have placed my books and then there is a small shelf where I keep the frequent books.

To the right of my study table, there is small table where my laptop is kept. So, whenever I feel like doing some work on my laptop, I sit on the mat and do my work. On the right of my study table, there is big mirror where I practice my speeches and often read out novels loud. Well, for the past one year, since I left my job, I am always in my study room or out of the house itself. I think too an extent my study room is an ideal study room because it has the mixture of both openness and isolation. There is technology as well as room for old books. It has got mirror and then a window which is very essential.

If ever I was to change my study room, I would only change the colour of the room. Presently it is painted in plain colours of violet. I would love to have more vibrant colours like orange and red in the room.

WORD MEANING

gaze : look steadily and intently, especially in admiration, surprise, or thought.

isolation: the process or fact of isolating or being isolated.

You should say:

  • When the event takes place
  • Why it takes place
  • What people do
  • And explain why the event is special.

Bagwal uttarakhand

Sample Answer:

I would like to talk about Bagwal, a festival which takes place near the Deivdhura temple in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, a state in the Northern part of India. It is celebrated on the 11th day of the 5th month (of the Hindu lunar calendar) i.e. in the month of August.

I think, the festival dates back to 8 AD. It was started to appease a Hindu Goddess called Varahi, by sacrificing animal and human blood. Villagers from the surrounding area form two groups, and they start pelting stones at each other, which results in people bleeding. Once the head priest feels that enough blood has been shed he calls for, to stop the fight. Post the event injured people are taken care of and the festival comes to an end with recitation of prayers. People from throughout the state and neighboring state come to witness the festival.

As the date suggest Bagwal is the oldest festival known to mankind, which has managed to live through ages, as well it keep us linked to our tradition. Off lately, no animals are sacrificed, which shows responsible behavior towards the animals. (187 Words)

IELTS Writing Essay

Do the advantages of having English as a global language outweigh the disadvantages?

Sample Answer:

Due to the colonization done by the British, more than half of the world started speaking English language and it has surely helped in uniting the world on a global platform. I would say the advantages of English as a global language outranks its disadvantages as a global language.

In today’s world, when people are traveling around the world for leisure, studies, work and medical treatment, understanding English language comes to an aid. It is the world’s only language which is widely spoken and understood. Standardization of the process, be it documents, maps, road signs, food menu, public transport etc. was required for the convenience of the people, this is where a universally spoken language comes handy…. ergo English. Speaking a common language in a foreign country helps you in easily adapting in a new environment, as you can relatively easily make friends, learn about the culture, find job, visit places. For a two way communication to happen successfully both the parties need to be able to understand each other and respond accordingly and this is where the language plays its crucial part of building a communication bridge.

If you are moving abroad to a new country for higher studies, you always tend to look for an English speaking country, less you are equally fluent in reading, writing, and speaking the other language like German, Cantonese, French or Russian. World’s major countries like United States of America, Russia, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are all English speaking countries, ergo moving to these countries for the purpose of work or relocating is relatively easier for a person who comes from an English moving country.
There are hardly any disadvantages that I can think of, considering English as a global language, barring just one that you get so engrossed in learning and communicating in English language that you lose touch with your own language and roots. Language is an integral part of the culture and it is what links you to it and it is what you pass on to your future generation.

I would like to conclude with the statement that English has truly become a global language which is playing a vital role in uniting the world and its advantages surely outweigh the disadvantages. (372 Words)
