SAMPLE ANSWER

The potential for the global media to have a remaining impact on the youth is considerable. It could either take them to their best or end up showing them the path of darkness. Although, some commentators believe that media has no importance in secondary education, analysts defend the idea that international news should be taught at schools.

Firstly, global media undoubtedly enriches the teenager’s understanding of contemporary affairs. It is because the news provides a person with the concise summary of the international affairs. For instance, a study by Oxford sociologist shows that media has a great impact on the kind of activities a teenager chooses to do. Even more, present day knowledge helps in understanding the importance of topics in school. International news will allow students to understand the concepts taught in class in a better way.

On the other hand, media’s attention on crime, violence and negative news impacts the teenagers. This is because the exposure to violence often leads to depression. Even more, when teenagers get acquainted about the lives of the celebrities, they tend to compare, leading to a troubled life. For instance, a recent survey has showed that depressed teenagers often cite the dismal state of the world as source of their depression. Mental health being one of the most important thing for an individual, study of international news could be a destructive and wasteful use of school resource.

In conclusion, study of news in school has both the positive and negative impacts. Thus, if medial studies are to enter schools in future, schools have to think about the negative aspects of news and try to minimize them.(273 Words)

IELTS Speaking Sample Question # Effects Of Television

Television, the idiot box, is one of the most popular invention in human history. No matter how many times people have tried to bring out the disadvantages of television, rarely has anyone seen a big affect on this industry. With times when there was only one channel being aired, to now when there are several channels and then so many serials, let us today have a look at some of the questions related to effects of television.

Do you think that TV makes people lazy?

Anything when done in access surely has its down affects and television is one of them. Watching it only for some time, can give refreshment but if one watches it for like forever, it surely makes you lazy because then there are so little activities that you can do.

Do you think too much time is spent watching TV?

I believe yes, there are lot of people who watch TV for more than 3 hours a day and in the age that we are living, with internet, there is so much more a person can learn by simply switching on the Internet. If a person chooses to watch Television for simply passing out time, there is not much that can be achieved. Also, there are some kids who after coming back home, directly switch on TV rather than changing. These things surely make the habits and do affect the person.

Do you think TV make a person passive?

Television has been regarded as a passive form of entertainment because there is no brain applied while watching television, also one need not to be very attentive while watching internet. With most of the senses not being used actively, if one watches lot of television, I think it surely does makes a person passive.

Does TV take away a person’s ability to think for himself or herself?

I am not very sure of this because it is not television that takes away anyone’s ability. It is what the person decides to do in his or her life. If a person chooses to simply watch television 24/7, there are more chances that he or she cannot make decisions because that is not what he or she is used to. However, if someone watches television for entertainment while doing other activities as well, there is not much harm that can be done.

Do you think that TV prevents people from communicating?

There are two sides to it. It can even prevent people from communicating or make the communication going. So, if someone watches only television and refuses to talk to anyone else, it does blocks away the communication, but then there are people who when meet each other talk about the stories in the television. They discuss on what is right and all about the characteristics of their favorite stars. In that sense, surely TV makes people communicating.

What do you think of TV shows that are designed to “discover new talent?”

Too an extent they do help finding new talent, because people from different places come to display their talents, but then with so many of them coming in, I doubt their integrity. There have been news where these shows asked for money to select a particular individual and then there is this public voting that takes place. Often in this, the most talented gets eliminated.

If you couldn’t watch TV at home but had to stay there, what would you do?

I would read novels because that is one thing I love more than anything in this world. Or may be a newspaper or anything to read.

Could you live without TV for a week?

Yes, I can. I remember there was a time I could not live without it for an hour, but recently I have stopped watching television.

Do you like watching TV alone or with your family?

If ever, I like watching television with my family because then you can laugh together at the jokes or make some jokes at the stupid things happening. Also, there is nothing much better than fighting for the remote with your siblings, making pacts and then breaching them.

Who decides what to watch: the parent or the child?

Until a certain age, it is the parent who decides what a child should watch, but I think after certain time, nothing can stop an individual from doing things that he or she prefers or loves to do.
