You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Many people are too scared to leave their home because of a fear of crime.

Some people think that with better government and law, the problem can be solved, however, others are of the opinion, that nothing can be done.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

We are living in an era, post the world war, and although, several peace organizations have been build, the fear of crime has developed among people. To add to this, several terrorist activities, also with the other crimes, have added to this fear. Although, some people believe that there is no way out of this, others are still hopeful. In my opinion, nothing can be done alone, but surely with the combined efforts of people and government, we can improve on it.

There are several reasons why people are skeptical of any improvement. Firstly, it is believed that fear is a state of mind which is perpetuated by the media. For example, we are often bombarded with negative news, the moment one opens the television or newspaper, you can find maximum of negative news. Secondly, an opinion has formed that the crime is because of the structural issues in the society which cannot be handled. Like, a person with no food or money is likely to steal.

On the other hand, there are even people of the opinion that there is still hope. If only the government can increase the police in local communities and encourage more ‘neighbourhood watch’ schemes, there are chances of improving the situation. Even more, media must also be encouraged to present more positive stories in the news about how crime is being tackled rather than the focus on the negative.

Overall, a wide opinion is formed that nothing can be done for the crime rates. However, there are some views that we can improve the situation. In my opinion, we can reduce fear by combined efforts of media, government and individuals.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Scientific Research

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Governments should be responsible for funding and controlling scientific research rather than private organizations.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Write at least 250 words.

The only way an individual can progress is by having a strong and effective scientific research. But in recent times, some people believe that it must be done by private, while others believe that it is the sole responsibility of government. In my opinion, a better research is possible only if government and private institutions join hands together.

The government organisations are driven by the need to make advances in knowledge in order to improve people’s lives. So, the funding for a research would be only made if it is for the better of the individual. However, private institutions are driven by profit. So, they are more likely to invest in a project that will give more benefits.

Even more, if the funding for research comes from one organisation we are more likely to get biased results. For instance, government will release a particular drug only after testing it well, this often takes more time than necessary.  The companies have large amounts of money invested in such research and the need for positive results is paramount. It is difficult for a scientist to remain impartial in these circumstances.

Overall, in my opinion, side lining one kind of funding might not be the best possible thing to do. This would result in an upheaval, the best way would be to utilize the benefits of government funding for poor and those of private to make some profits.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Whiten People

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

In many parts of the world, there is a profitable market for products which lighten or brightens the skin.

Outline the reasons for using such product and discuss what effects they have in terms of health and society.

Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

In many countries, particularly part of Asia, skin whitening creams are very popular and provide huge profits for the companies involved in their sale.

The major reason behind people using skin whitening cream, is the projection that fair skin people are more beautiful. May be this is because of the ancient history, people who were rich stayed indoors as compared to the poor, who worked outside. As a result, the rich became fair while the poor often were dark skin. As a result, now fair color is being taken as associated with high status. The next reason behind this is the desire for the ‘western look’. It could be attributed to the fact that they have been ruled by Westerners for a long time and now  they want to be like them.

However, despite the fact that having whiter skin may improve a person’s self-esteem, these products can have negative effects. With regards to health, it is believed that these products tend to harm the skin permanently. For instance, some contain steroids or toxins which can severely damage the skin and other parts of the body. In terms of society, there are also detrimental effects.

Overall, people are using white creams to make themselves better, this has resulted in a belief that white is better than black. This tends to have  dangerous consequences for people’s future health and society as a whole.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Animal Rights

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

A growing number of people feel that animal should not be exploited by people as animal rights are same rights as humans, while others argue that humans must employ animals to satisfy their various needs, including uses for food and research.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Animals are a part of nature, as humans are. However, in recent times the exploitation of animals has increased, causing animals to extinct. Some people believe that humans have the rights to exploit animals for their own benefit, while others disagree.

There are several reasons for people believing that animals can be used for the benefit of mankind. Firstly, there is a common belief that humans are the highest of the species in hierarchy. This means that if by experimenting on animals we can fight and find cures for diseases, then this takes priority over animal suffering. Secondly, animals are assumed to feel no pain or suffering as humans do, and therefore to kill animals is morally acceptable.

However, some people are of the opinion, that animals are very much the part of nature as we humans are. To prove this fact, several experiments have been done on animals which clearly prove that they feel the same amount of suffering and loss as humans do. Even more, a considerable amount of research on animals are done for cosmetics, rather than diseases, so it must be avoided. Also, it has been proved that humans can get all the vitamins and minerals from green vegetables, which makes eating or exploiting animals avoidable.

Overall,  although some people argue killing animals for research and food is ethical, in my opinion, exploiting animals will extinct them and cause imbalance in nature.
