Optional Practical Training

There is an old adage that you always learn more on the job than you ever do by simply reading books. This is true because in a job you get to handle the real work, you implement what you have grasped from the books. you learn how to deal with work pressure. Owing to this the US offers students with optional practical training(OPT).

OPT is the period during which undergraduate and graduate students with F1-status are allowed to work for at most one year on student visa towards getting practical training to complement their field of study. The permission is granted by the USCIS (United states custom and immigration services). A student who is has either completed their degree or has completed nine months in the college can apply to the OPT.

OPT is granted for 12 and 17 months. To be eligible for the 12 month OPT students can be of any degree in any field but for 17 month you need to have received a STEM degree in one of the approved major listed on USCIS website.

It is of two types-:
1.When haven’t completed your degree-: In this case, you work as part time.
2.When you have completed your degree-: in this case you work full time i.e 20 hours a week.

Rules # On-campus Placement

The on- campus employment is the most freely permitted by the USCIS regulations. Although f-1 status students can avail a job on –campus, they are very limited. In either case you can always seek guidance from the International Student Office regarding the job. There are many schools who do require that you obtain permission from the International Student Office prior to accepting any on-campus employment. Some universities don’t permit an on-campus placement during the first year or first semester.

You are subjected to the following rules if you wish to apply for an on-campus employment-:

  1. The student must maintain a valid F-1 visa status.
  2. You can work up to 20 hours a week while school is in session.
  3. You are allowed to work full time during campus holidays and vacations if you intend to register for the next semester
  4. The employment may not take away a job from the US resident.

School guidance is provided to ensure that you file all appropriate forms with USCIS and receive any necessary approval. Remember, all you need to take is the leap of faith, and trust that either you will land on ground or you will learn how to fly.

    1. It is the work performed on the school’s premises directly for your school. It could be a work that is affiliated to grant or assistantship.
    2. An on-campus placement could also be a work performed for on-location commercial firms, which provide services for students on campus. It could be school bookstore or cafeteria. Although jobs such as a construction company building a school building, is not deemed as an on-campus job.

Socialization @ USA

The world is on Internet and so is USA. Once you start indulging in the college life, you will understand that practically everyone is on Internet, emails are the most common and cheap way of communicating, and mostly people prefer using it. Internet is something that will be made available to you, once you enter the college.
Now here is the trick. Although you need to be present on Internet, it does not mean you need to be present only there. you have gone to USA to study and to socialize, to know there culture. Meet new people, understand how things happen around.

Socialization is the most important thing about study abroad. You meet new people, some of them, don’t turn out to be your type, with other you feel as if in home, but then you understand the difference between acquaintances and friends. You learn how to live with different personalities. Schools and colleges at America focus a lot on socialization. They want people to interact with each other, share ideas, create things and enjoy. Most importantly they make sure you develop the “people skills”.

So, yes, there are lot many things to do in USA, you could interact with people using Internet as well. but then remember, this is something you can even do while studying in your home town. Internet is omnipresent these days. When you really are present there, make sure to make real life conversations more, and yet don’t get out of Internet completely. Balance is the key.
