The number of natural disasters have risen quite dramatically in the 21st century. Humans have caused harm in every aspect to this planet and it is fair to say that we are seeing its implications now. Luckily, growing up witnessing a natural disaster was a rare occurrence but nowadays it is a very common phenomenon.

I’d like to talk about the recent Uttrakhand floods which had detrimental effects in my state. After witnessing scorching heat, people were happy that monsoon was finally here. Little did they know that this monsoon will have a devastating impact on their lives. Initially torrential rains and winds started blowing which were followed by thunder and lightning. Smiles turned into concerns and it was quite evident that it was the start of something bad.

It was raining cats and dogs. Although, I was accustomed to rains, having lived in valleys, the rains brought more concern in our entire fraternity. Up until that year we had never seen drainage issues but water started clogging up and seasonal rivers began to swallow. The cloud bursts made it even worse and the incessant rains was just aiding the cause of a potential disaster. Emergency services were on their toes and within a few days half the town was submerged. Many people lost their lives in these floods. We are still experiencing the aftermath of that incident up until now.

Luckily, my house is a bit far away from the river so we didn’t witness any damage as such but many were affected badly and needed urgent help. As they saying goes “you need to be in it to see it”. The entire experience was scary and we couldn’t go out of the house for 3 days. With no electricity or emergency messages being played, it felt more of a war zone. Once the rains stopped, people started rescuing those who were left stranded. Help arrived from different parts of the country and many housing redevelopment efforts are still going on.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: questions related to parties/celebrations

IELTS Speaking Part 3: questions related to parties/celebrations

Question. 1: What are the main reasons why people organise family parties in your country?

Answer: Family parties are very popular in my country. Most People organize special parties on birthdays and marriage anniversaries. Some young adults give parties after getting good grades in their exams or after being promoted to a high level position.

Question 2: In some places people spend a lot of money on parties that celebrate special family events. Is this ever true in your country? Do think this is a good trend or a bad trend?

Answer: Yes, wealthy people in my country throw lavish parties to celebrate special family functions. The pictures of their parties are often shown in newspapers. Even though it’s their own money, I feel that it’s a disturbing trend. It promotes discrimination in society and widens the gap between the rich and the poor.

Question 3: Are there many differences between family parties and parties given by friends? Why do you think this is?

Answer: Yes, there are. Family parties tend to be more formal as compared to parties organized by friends. Social decorum and elegance both are maintained in family functions. On the other hand, people feel freer in the parties of their friends. They normally don’t mind too much drinking or dancing, but in family functions any kind of misbehaviour can create a lot of problems.

National celebrations

Question 4: What kinds of national celebrations do you have in your country?

Answer: My country has two main national celebrations: the Independence Day and the Republic Day. The Independence Day is celebrated on 15th August and the Republic Day is celebrated on 26th January.

Question 5: Why do some people think that national celebrations are a waste of government money? Would you agree or disagree with this view? Why?

Answer: Some governments spend huge sums of money on national celebrations. If a country is facing problems like unemployment, illiteracy, poverty or poor infrastructure, then people will certainly complain about the money spent on national functions. In my view, the government should focus on the development of the nation rather than showcasing their military might in national celebrations.

Sample Answer:

About a week back I had been feeling really stressed out and overworked due to my extra shifts at work. I was having very little sleep and was quite unable to take care of myself.

Over the weekend, my brother came to visit me to see how was getting along. He immediately noticed my put out state and began to worry. The next thing I knew, he was dragging me into town. He took me to all of my favourite city landmarks especially the ones next to the river.

Then we went to this fantastic restaurant and he treated me to the biggest ice cream sundae they had. We had a blast at the arcade followed by a trip to the movies. By the time we go home, I had all but forgotten my worries in my exhausted happiness.

Next morning on waking up I realized what a great time I had had, furthermore I felt more relaxed than I had in a long time. My brother showed me that sometimes all it takes to unwind is going out somewhere and enjoying the moment. This is an incident that will surely become a fond memory someday.

Sample Answer:

I am a person of varied taste when it comes to reading a book, watching a movie and or listening to music. When it comes to movies, I prefer watching sci-fi the most. Today I would like to talk about a Hollywood sci-fi movie “The Martian” 2015. Mark was the lead character, which was played by Matt Damon.

The plot of the movie is pretty simple yet it keeps you woven and intrigued. Mark gets stranded on Mars because of a storm, his team thinks he is dead, as the last telemetry from his suit indicates no sign of life. From here on his journey of survival on Mars begins. Mark, being a botanist, improvises a farm inside the habitat utilising Martian soil fertilized with human waste. He even produces water by extracting hydrogen from leftover rocket fuel, and utilizes the stock of potatoes he had from his expedition to make new crop of potatoes for himself, as he was to stay there for another 4 years before help could be sent to him.

The story-line has a huge significance with today’s age as we are eagerly looking forward to colonise the Mars. Even NASA assisted the filmmakers with depicting the science and technology in ‘The Martian’ since it saw the movie has a potential of promoting space exploration.

Right from my early childhood days, like any other kid of my age I was really fascinated by outer space, the universe and the explorations made by the astronauts. One thing which has always fascinated me, is the possibility of life on the other planets. To an extent, the movie has answered this question and also solidified my belief regarding the possibility of life beyond our planet Earth. (287 Words)
