IELTS Speaking 2017 Questions # Work

Part I of the IELTS speaking section is where you get asked questions related to work or home or anything that is about you. This time let us have a look at the latest questions asked in the IELTS Part I of the speaking section.

Tell me something about your work.

I work at an Indian MNC as a software engineer. Our organisation has different streams in which one can work on. I am part of the DNA i.e. the data and analytics team. So, my work requires me to write queries and procedures for handling data and analysing it. Recently, we did an analysis to find the trend of data and helped our customers in selling their products.

What do you do at work?

Our company offers lot of extra curricular activities along with work. So, for my project, I am working on Hadoop and Oracle. For most part, we are either setting up replications or writing codes to make sure that we are able to deal with data in a better way. The amazing part about data is that it is dynamic. So, we consider one thing and write a code but then data changes and we have to make changes. Our main task is to make sure that there are less of changes required.

What do you usually do after work?

When I am not working, I either attend the toastmasters sessions or do something about a club that I recently joined. The club is about handling the employee grievances. Back at home, I usually read a novel or write blogs.

What do you take with you when you go out?

I think I always take some money with me when I am out. It could be as less as 10 bucks but I make sure I do have some money with me. Also, I ensure that I have my specs and a pen with me.

Are the things that you take with you always the same when you go out?

The basics i.e. a pen, some money and my specs, well they are common all throughout. But, other things do vary. So, sometimes I carry a book as well or my ATM or my makeup things depending on the place I am going to.

IELTS Cue Card 2017 Questions # Decision

Often in life we make decisions, other times people make decisions for us. This time we are having a look at the recent IELTS speaking cue card that talks about a decision that the individual disagrees with.

Describe a decision that you disagreed with. You should say –

  • who made the decision
  • what was the decision for and who was impacted
  • did you express your opinion

Also, explain, what you believed should have been the decision.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

An year back, when I was working for an organisation, I was part of an employee committee. So, all the grievances of the employees were taken by us to the HRs. I remember, a ultimatum was given out that all the employees will have to pay for the parking even though a proper parking was not available. This brought lot of rage in the employees and we felt that too. Because asking an employee to pay for the parking of his or her vehicle for the work of the company felt unfair.

We had a meeting soon with the HR and they gave their own justification and we gave ours. Ultimately, it was informed that such decision are often taken for the larger good and we must go with it. Although, I couldn’t do anything about it, I really felt it was  a wrong decision made on part of the company. Because decisions like these portray how less the big boss cares for the rest.

In my opinion, the company should have first built the parking and showed her employees the benefits and then could have probably asked for a minimal charge. Imposing a decision did not go well with employees creating sense of injustice among everyone.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

As we grow up, we realise that there is nothing wrong. Only two rights and we have to choose the one for ourselves. One of my friend once took a decision of breaking up with a boy she loved for reasons that I felt were invalid. Everything was going fine one day when the boy stopped talking for no reasons at all. She tried asking him for the behaviour change but he never gave an answer.

However, after that they again patched up and went about being in a relationship for a month, before she finally decided to break up. I think the decision was wrong, because instead of understanding each other, they both decided to end a relationship. I believe it takes time to build bonds and when broken they leave scars. Ending up something beautiful without knowing the right answer was not what I felt should have been done.

It could be possible that the boy was going through some tough time and all he needed was some space. Surely he did not talked about it, but looking back I think it was their test of love, which they failed.

IELTS Speaking 2017 Questions # Home and Mirror

This time we present to you a series of questions on home and mirror along with their answers that have been recently asked in the IELTS speaking section.

PART 1

Where are you from?

I am originally from Almora, a hill station in Uttarakhand near Nainital and is around 300 kms from the capital of India, Delhi. But, due to my father’s frequent transfer, I have lived in lot of places in India. Presently, I am in Bhubaneswar for my job.

Is it a nice place to live in?

Almora is a beautiful place to live in. It is surrounded by Himalayas and other hills. Everytime you get out of your house, you feel as if you are in heaven. The climate is amazing, even after the global warming happening across all over the world, it is one of the places where we still don’t require fans during summers. Being a small town, most people know each other so it seems like an extended family.

Are you planning to live there in future?

Definitely yes. Right now, I have just begin my career and I am trying new things out and learning how things work. But, ultimately I wish to go back and settle in Almora in my paternal grandfather’s house and most probably do some sort of business there.

Do you often look in the mirror?

Not frequently. But, if I am going out for a party or may be on a date or if sometimes when I try a new look, I do look at mirror more than the usual times. So, one can find me catching a glimpse of me in the mirror of the car or the flash of a shiny thing, just to make sure that I am looking good. Apart from this, while preparing for a speech, well I usually prefer mirrors for that. But, otherwise mirror is surely not my best friend.

Do you have mirror at home?

Presently, I am living in a furnished apartment. So, everything that is there was already placed and yes I do have mirrors in my home. There are two mirrors, each in one room and then there is a mirror in the bathroom as well.

Is it a good idea to use mirrors in the interior design?

I believe it depends on the individual’s choice. Someone who loves their own reflection, can probably have lot of mirrors in their interior designs, otherwise one may choose not to have. But, for me, I would love to have mirrors in the interiors of my house. But, I would prefer having them in such a way that they reflect the outside beauty in the mirrors.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Adventurous Person

There are so many times in our lives that we wish to do certain things in life, sometimes go high or may be do something we never thought of. Doing things that we are not comfortable doing is what makes who we are. This time in the IELTS cue card we are talking about an adventurous person.

Describe an adventurous person you know.

You should say –

  • who the person is
  • how you know the person
  • what risks the person takes

And explain why you think that person likes to take risks.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

Talking of adventure, the one person that comes to my mind is my brother, David Miller. In times when we thought about jumping off the walls, I remember he went  river rafting. Initially, we all were so scared that we tried manipulating him to drop the idea. But he did it and came out stronger. Ever since he has been part of lot many adventurous sports. However, it is not just about playing those sports out, what he has learnt is how to take tough decisions in life. So, when all of us were busy confused on whether we should do certain things or not, he did it.

Recently, he left a very cushioned job to have his own company. I think this is more of a real adventure, the one that effects lot of things and one that requires patience and confidence. In his words, he never takes risk, he does what he thinks is right and then does it all the way no matter how uncomfortable he gets in it.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

Taking risks requires lot of courage, be it for any sport or for that matter in life. One adventurous person I can think of is a friend of mine Avinash. He has been one of those few people that I met who remained calm on the surface but paddled hard beneath. Talking to him one feels like the only thing that he does is sleep. But, he has been at some of the most amazing places one could think of and done really crazy things.

I remember him telling me how once he sneaked out of his house for a trip to Leh and on reaching called back his parents. He was in 12th grade then. Recently, when I met him he has become a traveller and for earning takes people to people they have never thought of.

I think it is not just about going to the exciting places that makes him adventurous but then doing something that people never thought him to be doing and taking it all over is what makes him audacious.
