Reading @IELTS Or TOEFL ?

Reading section is although common in both the exams, there is certain amount of difference on how both of them, test your skill.

TOEFL

There are three to five sections of twenty minutes each. The reading material is academic in nature. The questions asked are of multiple choices. The reading passage deals with topics you would study in your initial years in university. For example : natural sciences, social sciences, business or arts. You need not to know about these topics. What TOEFL checks is, whether you can understand a completely different topic or not. You are required to attempt all the sections of it. Although there might be a chance that you are not graded on one of them they could be used for experimental reasons.

Increase Your Band

IELTS is not an exam that just checks your English writing skills, it has so much more to do with your passion, the want to do something. Well, doing more requires giving more! So, do you want to increase your band and study in the world’s best university? Who does not wants that?  We all want a 7+ band in IELTS and get to live our dreams!! But, having a dream and accomplishing it are two different stories all together!

The main problem however is, how can someone with English not as their mother tongue get it? Although, there are many things that you can do or be, what is more important is not what you do some days, but what you do consistently! Each day. So, for all of that, there are four simple things that you can do and achieve high band in IELTS.

1. Do one English activity everyday. Be it, watching an English film, or listening to an English song, or have a conversation in English or read something in English. Anything that ticks you.
2. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Make mistakes, learn the crap out of them. Just learn why you made it and what is the best answer to it.
3. Join some online English community. For e.g. gap fillers
4. It is not about how much you practice today, but how much you do everyday. So, do little but do often.

Remember, consistency plays a very important role in success. I don’t care about what you do this day or that do, I am bothered about what you do everyday. Because that is the one thing that will affect your life.

Reading Test Tips

READING TEST TIPS

1. True / False / Not given questions are by far the most difficult types of question to answer as they are designed to trick people into thinking about the answer and giving their deduction as an answer.

2. Many students are generally very good at reading tests – they are very good at spotting the key words in a question, finding those keywords in a text, reading around the key words and finding the answer to the question. However, as with the listening test, in the IELTS reading test the words in the questions are often not the words you will find in the answer. As a result you have to look for synonyms of key words as well as the actual keywords. Consider a word like ‘correct’ – among others, possible synonyms include:

a. Right
b. Accurate
c. Exact
d. Truthful
e. Spot on
f. Proper
g. Acceptable
h. Accepted

Depending on the context, only some of these synonyms might apply. You need to be aware of for these words as well as the keywords you are looking for. In addition, consider antonyms – words with the opposite meanings. A sentence like ‘It wouldn’t be wrong’ would mean ‘correct’ in certain contexts. As you can see, you will need a fairly deep understanding of vocabulary.
