IELTS Essay Sample Questions # Reward Or Punishment

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Do children behave better when they are rewarded or punished? Discuss both views and give your opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The most impactful years in the lives of person are that of childhood. It is in these years that one forms impressions and the experiences shape the nature and behavior of the child. Some people believe that a child must be punished for a wrongdoing while others believe that one must shape an individual through rewards.

Rewards and recognition are the positive pillars to motivate a person. When a child gets a reward for speaking well or discipline or cleanliness, it motivates him or her to do it more. Even more, the child gets to know the importance of the good things he or she is doing in life. Even more, complementing children for their excellence boosts their self-esteem and help them become better individuals.

However, punishments have their own impact on the lives of an individual. Children refrain from doing an activity in fear of receiving punishment. For instance, if a child was abstained from having chocolate because of a mistake he or she did, there will be a realisation on why the things are not right. Punishing must not mean physical or mental torture, if done with care it brings in the realisation more than fear.

Overall, growing years are formative years of a child life and both rewards and punishment are necessary. In my opinion, a child must get both but what is more important is the realisation of things from rewards and recognition.

IELTS Essay Sample Answers # Family Talks

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Nowadays, we communicate less with our family members. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ANSWER

The world has become a global village yet in many sense it has grown apart. We can talk with people miles away by just a click of a button yet have failed to make real time connections with people around. With the hustle and bustle of our lives and the maddening rush of proving oneself, most people have lost the daily connect with family members.

Technology has a major role to play in the lives of 21st-century people in all aspects. For example – children today prefer playing with their tablet rather than watching television or playing with their parents and friends. Further more, the concept of nuclear families has become prominent. More and more people are likely to stay away from their parents. Adding to it, they are often very busy with their lives. Most parents are not able to connect with their parents and then also with their children.

However, there are some people who still are able to find a balance between the rush of life and the real life connections they have with people. Proper utilization of their weekends and effective planning is what helps them in being in connection with their family members. For instance, a friend of mine plans two holidays every year, one with family members the other alone. Also, he makes sure he has a chat with his parents daily.

Technology, competition, and globalization might have made it not obvious for people to connect with their family members. But, even in this rush, if someone can give solace to us it is the family members. There are some who delay it, but most people are now trying to have a connection with their blood mates.

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.
Today more and more young children have mobile phones. Critics say that this is a negative development. Do you agree or disagree? What is your opinion?
Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Cell-phone texting has become a preferred channel of basic communication between teens and their friends, with cell calling being second. There is no denying that technology has evolved over a period of time and has become easily accessible across the globe. One such technology advancement, that has swept the world and made people stick to it, is the mobile phone technology. More and more youngsters are inclined towards it. But, there are some opinions that mobile phones have more negative impact on younger generation than positive.

With so many features being available to them, most of them have dedicated their lives to a five-inch screen. A recent study showed that the people aged between 15-30 years are addicted to phones and are more likely to face depression, anxiety, and heart palpitations. Furthermore, the young people using phones tend to have a negative impact on their studies and job. Most of them lose out on connecting with people in real life because of their over indulgence in the technology at large.

However, mobile phones also have a positive impact. With the crime rates in young people increasing phones make sure they can be tracked. For example, in a recent kidnapping case, police was able to track down the victim using the GPS on their mobile phones. Moreover, many young people have used their mobile phones in fighting corruption.

The latest mobile phones are embedded with powerful tools and there is no denying that. However, most people tend to have compulsions to it leading to a depressed and often anxious individual. So, in my opinion, the mobile phone is a power that needs to be used with equal responsibility.
