Sample Answer

We all purchase new things for various purposes every now and then. In my family, my parents do most of the shopping ranging from grocery to expensive items. I also buy different things as per my interest and I have recently bought a microwave for my home from my savings. It is a piece of electronic equipment for kitchen purposes.

Last Sunday, I was roaming around in a shopping complex nearby my home, when I saw a pamphlet advertising a heavy discount on many electronic products such as televisions, refrigerators and microwave ovens in a shop on the second floor of the complex. I decided to have a look at the products they had to offer. I went inside the shop and found many products being sold at amazing deals, but I decided to buy a microwave. It was available at a thirty percent discount bringing it within my budget. I was happy as I thought about its usage and practicality in my home.

After some thinking and being satisfied with the product, I purchased it and took it home as a surprise. Everyone in my family was pleased as they could use it to reheat food or snacks or make coffee or tea at any time in a hassle-free manner. My mother was especially elated as it would help her to make hot and fresh food without fretting in the kitchen for long periods of time. I was happy that I had purchased this microwave for my household and that it would be useful for everyone.

Part 3 Follow-Up Questions

Q1. How has technology changed our lives?

Technology has completely changed our lives. Nothing we do from morning to evening has remained the same. From the moment we wake up by the alarm clock to the time we go to bed by turning off the lights, everything depends on technology. Mobile phones and the computers are the latest in the ever-growing list of our gadgets. They have fundamentally changed the way people live and work. Every generation sees a new piece of technology replacing the old one. But my generation is unique because mobile phones have supplanted not one or two, but almost the entire repertoire of our devices.

Q2. What are the ways in which technology is misused nowadays?

Technology is like money. We can either use it for creative purposes or for wasting time. It is such a powerful weapon that it can completely upend our lives for the better or for worse. People get a rush of dopamine when they check their social media feed on the internet and scientists warn us it is akin to the response seen after taking narcotic substances. Modern warfare is another area in which technology can have disastrous consequences.

Q3. Overall, is technology good or bad for us?

Again, as I mentioned above, overall technology is as good or bad as the person using it. It can very well be used for negative purposes, but if used for constructive causes, it can make our lives much easier.

Q4. How is technology going to influence our future?

Technology is going to advance further at a greater pace. It is like a genie out of the bottle. It is now out, and is impossible to be put back. Artificial Intelligence is supposed to make our jobs redundant and people will have to find alternative jobs to survive. No industry be it defense, hospitality, marketing or healthcare, is left untouched by technology, and it is only a matter of time when we see even further changes in these areas.

IELTS Cue Card 2024: Talk about a time when you gave advice to someone

Talk about a time when you gave advice to someone

You should say:

  • who did you give advice to?
  • what advice did you give?
  • why did you give advice?
  • How was it helpful and how did he/she feel about it?

Sample Answer

Advice is information that has the potential to positively impact life. Many relate it to finance and education. However, it has broader concepts like managing life, fixing relationships, and many more. However, one must be mindful before seeking advice and putting it to use. Today, I will be sharing a situation where my advice helped my friend Maya get back on the right track in life.

Six months ago, I received a call from my school friend, Maya. I got to know that she had moved to Australia for her further studies. When I inquired about her life in Australia, she started crying. I didn’t know what to do, but somehow, I calmed her down and requested that she share her agony. Maya broke down and mentioned that she feels home-sick and wants to head back to India. She further added that buying groceries was the only reason for her to step out of home; Maya had stopped attending her classes, which resulted in low marks in all her subjects. She explained that her health was declining too. After listening to her, I first asked her to relax and consoled her. I added that moving and settling in another country is indeed an onerous task; however, a lot of people manage it with ease, and she is not less than anyone. She was constantly asking me to help her. Looking after her health must be her first priority. I firmly told her to stop skipping meals and start mediating to attain peace and calm. Secondly, she should attend her classes at least five days a week and try to make friends with her classmates. Lastly, she should keep herself engaged by doing part-time work. Maya and I made a deal that she would follow this for a month, and if it didn’t help, she would return.

After a month, she called me, and this time she sounded better. She started attending her classes daily, taking good care of her health, and soon will start her part-time job at a library. Maya added that she has decided to continue this routine further and thanked me for guiding her in the right direction. I was happy that I was able to help her.

IELTS Cue Card 2024: Describe a house or an apartment you want to live in

Describe a house or an apartment you want to live in

You should say:

  • what it would look like?
  • where it would be located?
  • what facilities this would have?
  • And explain why you want to live there.

Sample Answer

Home is where the heart is. We all have dreams and things we want from our lives. It’s ok to be materialistic in life and there is no harm in having some luxuries. I was born and raised in a valley surrounded by hills so I’d like my dream house to be ideally located somewhere in between the hills.

The location of the house would be a semi-urban area as certain places in the hills are secluded and there are no facilities available for miles. I’d like my dream home to be located in Mussoorie, a small hill station resting on the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India.

The house would be a medium-sized bungalow with two floors, a front and a back garden and have all the modern-day amenities. The building will be designed as such that all the windows of the bungalow will overlook the Doon valley. The architecture will be of Victorian era.

The ground floor will have a spacious living room adjoining a modular kitchen and a bar which will have spirits from different parts of the earth. As the climate remains cool in Mussoorie throughout the year, the windows of the bungalow will be double-glazed to provide insulation to protect us in the harsh cold weather. The upper floor will have a master bedroom and two other bedrooms as well.

As I live in the city so I’ll use this house as a holiday home and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Located in nature’s lap, it will be a perfect relaxation spot. Once in my latter years of life,  I’d like to retire and live a calm and peaceful life in a serene environment.

IELTS Cue Card 2024: Describe a beautiful place you once visited as a tourist.

IELTS Speaking Task Cue Card:

Describe a beautiful place you once visited as a tourist.

  • what the place was?
  • when you went to this place?
  • where it was?
  • who you went with?
  • and say why you liked it so much.

Sample Answer

Travelling is my hobby and I annually plan a trip to any attractive place. In fact, this has become a part of my life in the last couple of years. I have visited several places in my country, but today I’d like to talk about a place which is not less than the heaven for me.

A few years ago I went on a long weekend to Munsiyari village in the Pithoragarh district. It’s a very popular holiday destination in the northern part of my country which attracts tourists from all over the world. I went on my own and had a wonderful time. As it can get very busy with hordes of tourists so I decided to go out of season in the autumn.

The weather was mild and the shops were full of local crafts. I purchased a wooden mirror which has a beautiful carving on its edges and a wooden comb, which was handcrafted by the natives of that village.  I stayed in a youth hostel and met some really amazing people, but the most memorable thing about the holiday were the breathtaking views and the lovely picturesque village. The village serves as a base for three famous glaciers- I’m not aware of their names, but certainly visitors wanting an adrenaline rush can go trekking to these glaciers as well. I also tried some local delicacies which were mouth – watering and the one which made me lick my hands was Churkhani.

I can say that it was the holiday of a lifetime and I would love to visit that place again. But this time, I won’t go alone and would like my family to join me as well. Also, I will book a guided tour for the next time as earlier I wasn’t able to visit all the places of interest.

Part 3 Follow-Up Questions

Q1. What kinds of activities do people in your country like to do in the holidays?

People, in my country, get involved in different kinds of activities depending on the seasons and the duration of the holidays. However, generally speaking, people usually like to visit their families and friends to spend some quality time with them. Some people also like to just stay home and watch some movies while enjoying some scrumptious food. Then, many others like to travel to popular tourist destinations with their families or friends to make their holidays even more memorable.

Q2. How do people choose their destinations when they plan to travel during the holidays?

That’s an interesting question and I believe there can be number of factors for this. But, out of those factors, I would consider four as the most important ones. The first one is the cost of traveling and living there. The lesser the cost, the better it is. Another reason could be how pleasant the weather is in that place. The third factor is, what kinds of things or activities one can enjoy in that holiday destination. Lastly, but certainly not the least, how safe and secure the holiday destination is, for staying with family.
