Part 2 Cue Card

Describe a skill (for example, driving, speed reading etc.) you have learned successfully
You should say:

  • What skill you have learned?
  • Why you learned it?
  • Who helped you learn it?

and explain what helped you to become good at the skill.

Sample Answer

Skills play a defining role in our lives. They make us more efficient and productive. Today, I am going to talk about a skill that I learnt successfully.
Two years ago, I learnt how to drive a car. I live in the countryside, and my workplace is about 20 km away from my home. When I started working, either my father or my sister used to drop and pick me up at the office every day. But, after a while, this daily duty became an unnecessary burden for them, as they have their own jobs. In general, I am a confident person, but this dependency on others affected my self-esteem. So, I immediately decided to take driving lessons.
There is a well-known driving school near my home. I contacted the school and took two months’ training. The trainer was very friendly. He always gave clear instructions and prepared me really well for the driving test. Later, I successfully passed the driving test and obtained my driving licence.
Driving is a skill which takes a lot of time to master. But, once you overcome the fear of driving on crowded roads, it gives you immense satisfaction and pleasure. The same thing applies to me. To improve my car-driving skills, I drove daily to my office and to other nearby locations. I used to make mistakes at the beginning, but I always took a note of them and tried not to repeat them.
In short, my commitment, perseverance and dedication helped me become a skilled driver.

Part 2, Part 3 Follow-up questions

Skills and everyday life
Q. 1 Can you compare the skills that are important nowadays with the skills that were important 20 or 30 years ago?
Sample answer: Twenty/thirty years ago, traditional skills like weaving, knitting, sewing and earthenware pottery making were an integral part of people’s lives. But, nowadays, computer, management, language, and data analysis skills are given more importance.
Q. 2 What skills are valued most in your country?
Sample answer: My country is a developing nation, and there are many sectors such as banking, manufacturing, information technology, tourism, etc. In almost every sector, basic computer skills and communication skills are of utmost significance.
Q. 3 What kind of skills might be important in the future?
Sample answer: This is an interesting question. Considering the amount of data generated every day, I think that in the future the demand for research and data analysis skills will rise considerably.
Skills and training
Q.4 What qualities does a good trainer need to have?
Sample answer: In my opinion, a professional trainer should have a wide range of skills. Firstly, he/she should possess an in-depth knowledge of his field. Secondly, he/she must be friendly, punctual and impartial. Thirdly and most importantly, he/she should lead by example.
Q. 5: Why should companies invest a lot of money in training?
Sample answer: Training programmes are vital for the growth of a company. A company with trained staff is more likely to outperform its competitors. Regular training sessions upgrade the knowledge and skills of employees, which in turn leads to higher productivity and profitability. For this reason, many companies spend a major part of their annual budget on different types of trainings.
Q. 6 Do you think schools and universities prepare young people well for the future employment?
Sample answer: Not really. I think that secondary schools and universities in most parts of the world focus too much on conventional academic subjects like mathematics, science, history, etc. Professional skills are often neglected. This imbalance between theoretical and practical knowledge has a negative impact on the future job prospects of young people.

IELTS Cue card: A plant that you find useful

You should say:

  • Its name?
  • Where it is commonly grown?
  • What it looks like?
  • And explain why you find it useful.

IELTS Cue card: A plant that you find useful

Sample answer

I’m a nature lover. I have planted many different types of plants in my garden. All of them have their own special features. Today, I will talk about one plant which I think is highly beneficial.

The name of the plant is aloe vera. It’s a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant. The average height of the plant is around 60-100 cm. It has triangular, fleshy green leaves with serrated edges. These prickly leaves act as a defence against animals and insects.

There are different species of aloe vera, and they are commonly found in most parts of the world. Aloe can grow indoors as well as outdoors. A certain amount of sunlight is essential for these plants to thrive.

I’ve read many reports about the health benefits of aloe vera. This plant is not only used in medicine but is also a vital ingredient in cosmetic products. It’s packed with antiviral and antibacterial properties which make it ideal for curing skin problems. My mother always uses aloe vera mixed with coconut oil to moisturise her hair before washing it, and I have to say, she’s nearly fifty years old, but there are no signs of white, fragile or dry hair. It really is an incredible plant, and it’s so easy to grow too!

High level words and their meanings:

succulent: a plant in which the leaves and stem are thick and can store a lot of water,

serrated: having a row of sharp points along the edge,

thrive: to grow, develop, or be successful, fragile: easily damaged, broken, or harmed

Another Similar Cue Card

Talk about a plant that you find useful.

  • What is the common name of the plant, mention scientific name if you know it?
  • Who informed you about the plant and where did you see it for the first time?
  • Which climate is suitable for its growth and where is it found?

And what are its uses and when did you use it last time?

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO –

We have several useful plants in our environment. Knowledge of botany enables us to know the species, botanical names and several utilities of the plants. For instance, roses are used for perfumery and decorations, primarily. Well, for this conversation, I would like to discuss the plant that goes by the common name of ‘Neem’. Fortunately, I can remember its botanical name too, as it is a common species. Azadirachta Indica is its botanical name, and it’s a species of mahogany called Meliaceae.

My grandfather first made me see the plant on our patio. We had a big house with a large courtyard, where my grandfather used to pick a twig of neem to cleanse his mouth in the morning. I still remember him calling the name of the tree aloud to me when I was nearly 7 years old. I never forgot the name since then, although I read the botanical name later out of my own curiosity.

A tropical climate with average rainfall is most conducive for its growth. It is a deciduous tree that sheds its leaves for a very brief period in autumn. It takes a few years for a neem plant to grow into a full tree. Mostly, it is found in the Indian subcontinent and a few other tropical regions with average rainfall.

The neem tree has several uses because of its herbal and medicinal properties. As told by me earlier, its twigs are used for teeth cleaning and overall mouth cleansing. Its leaves and bark find applications in several herbal medicines for dermatitis and other disorders related to several organs like liver, stomach and heart. It is also used in naphtha balls. I used it last in my fields as fertiliser, as the govt has recently come up with neem-coated urea for its ecological friendliness.

IELTS Cue Card # Talk about a recent experience when the internet solved your problem? Best IELTS Band 7 Coaching in dehradun

 SAMPLE ANSWER –

The internet is an essential part of survival in the present-day world. It has been a lifesaver for me numerous times, but here I can recall a time when the internet helped me handle a bad situation. I have the habit of keeping all the important information on my phone instead of my laptop. Last week, when I was busy studying for my exam, all of a sudden my phone’s screen froze, due to which I wasn’t able to make any calls or check my notes.

I panicked, as it was quite late at night, and I couldn’t head to the market to get some professional help. My phone included all important recorded lectures and notes. I lost hope and had pessimistic thoughts in my mind regarding my exam. I started searching for a temporary solution to fix my iPhone. There were some solutions available on sites, and I followed the steps in order to try my luck.

I followed the instructions given and connected my phone to the computer. It asked for a software update, and I thought of trying it, as I didn’t have any other option since all my important information, including my admit card, was in my phone. It nearly took two hours to complete the update and reboot my iPhone.

Luckily, the phone restarted, and I felt a sign of relief at that hour. Though we keep on criticising the internet and technology on a daily basis, during that moment I couldn’t be thankful enough to them.

Cue Card # A time when you didn’t share a truth with your best friend. Best IELTS Band7 Coaching in dehradun

SAMPLE ANSWER –

Trust is considered to be an important tool in one’s friendship, which takes time and diligence to rebuild if lost. Here, I’d like to talk about a time when I tried to conceal a secret from a friend, which had a bad effect on our friendship. The scenario happened quite a while ago when we were in university. It was during our results when I tried to keep my best friend’s poor grades confidential, as she was enjoying her cousin’s wedding at that time.

As far as I remember, most of my friends were worried about their performance in the exams, but my best friend had a different level of excitement since it was her relative’s wedding within two days. Though she was equally nervous about the results, she didn’t let her fear come between her happiness. When the result was declared, all of my friends cleared the exams with flying colours, but unfortunately, my best friend’s result was not up to expectations.

I decided not to inform her about the result on a call, as it might affect her joyful state of mind about the wedding ceremonies. But unluckily, she got this bitter news from one of our classmates. She was deeply affected by it, as those results were going to have a major impact on our placements.

Initially, this situation jeopardised our friendship, and people tried to create misunderstandings between us. But after a couple of days, she considered my point of view and tried to look at it from my position. We later apologised and promised to never hide the truth from each other, no matter how bitter it would be.
