IELTS Speaking Test # Skill, you have learned successfully

IELTS Speaking Test
The speaking test in IELTS consists of three parts.
Duration 11-14 minutes
One examiner + one candidate
Part 1 (4-5 minutes): The examiner asks a number of questions about familiar topics such as the candidate’s studies/work, hobbies, interests etc. Normally 8-9 questions are asked in this part.
Part 2 (3-4 minutes): The examiner gives you a topic to talk about. The topic is written down and includes some bullet points to guide you. After a minute’s preparation, the candidate speaks for two minutes on the topic provided by the examiner.
Part 3 (5-6 minutes): The examiner and the candidate discuss some general questions based on the theme of the Part 2 topic.
In this post I will focus on Part 2 and Part 3.

Part2 Cue Card

Describe a skill (for example, driving, speed reading etc.) you have learned successfully
You should say:

  • What skill you have learned?
  • Why you learned it?
  • Who helped you learn it?

and explain what helped you to become good at the skill.

Sample Answer

Skills play a defining role in our life. They make us more efficient and productive. Today, I am going to talk about a skill that I learnt successfully.
Two years ago, I learnt how to drive a car. I live in the countryside and my workplace is about 20 km away from my home. When I started working, either my father or my sister used to drop and pick me up at the office every day. But, after a while, this daily duty became an unnecessary burden for them as they have their own jobs. In general, I am a confident person but this dependency on others affected my self-esteem. So, I immediately decided to take driving lessons.
There is a well-known driving school near my home. I contacted the school and took two months’ training. The trainer was very friendly. He always gave clear instructions and prepared me really well for the driving test. Later, I successfully passed the driving test and obtained my driving license.
Driving is a skill which takes a lot of time to master. But, once you overcome the fear of driving on crowded roads, it gives you immense satisfaction and pleasure. The same thing applies to me. To improve my car driving skills, I drove daily to my office and to other nearby locations. I used to make mistakes at the beginning but I always took a note of them and tried not to repeat them.
In short, my commitment, perseverance and dedication helped me become a skilled driver.

Part2 Part 3 Follow-up questions

Skills and everyday life
Q. 1 Can you compare the skills that are important nowadays with the skills that were important 20 or 30 years ago?
Sample answer: Twenty/thirty years ago, traditional skills like weaving, knitting, sewing and earthenware pottery making were an integral part of people’s lives. But, nowadays, computer, management, language, and data analysis skills are given more importance.
Q. 2 What skills are valued most in your country?
Sample answer: My country is a developing nation and there are many sectors such as banking, manufacturing, information technology and tourism etc. In almost every sector, basic computer skills and communication skills are of utmost significance.
Q. 3 What kind of skills might be important in the future?
Sample answer: This is an interesting question. Considering the amount of data generated every day, I think that in the future the demand for research and data analysis skills will rise considerably.
Skills and training
Q. 4 What qualities does a good trainer need to have?
Sample answer: In my opinion, a professional trainer should have a wide range of skills. Firstly, he/she should possess an in-depth knowledge of his field. Secondly, he/she must be friendly, punctual and impartial. Thirdly and most importantly, he/she should lead by example.
Q. 5 Why should companies invest a lot of money in training?
Sample answer: Training programs are vital for the growth of a company. A company with the trained staff is more likely to outperform its competitors. Regular training sessions upgrade the knowledge and skills of employees which in turn leads to higher productivity and profitability. For this reason, many companies spend a major part of their annual budget on different types of trainings.
Q. 6 Do you think schools and universities prepare young people well for the future employment?
Sample answer: Not really. I think that secondary schools and universities in most parts of the world focus too much on conventional academic subjects like mathematics, science and history etc. Professional skills are often neglected. This imbalance between theoretical and practical knowledge has a negative impact on the future job prospects of young people.

IELTS Cue Card – Describe a person who thinks a lot about music.

Describe a person who thinks a lot about music.

You should say:

  • Who this person is?
  • How do you know him/her?
  • What music he/she likes?
  • And explain how you feel about him/her
SAMPLE ANSWER

Music has no boundaries and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Today, I’d like to talk about my brother, who is a music enthusiast. His entire life revolves around music.
For my brother, music is not just a mere form of entertainment but a therapy that rejuvenates people and provides inner peace. He is also extremely fascinated by different genres, their history, and the musical instruments used to produce the beautiful tones that captivate our minds. I’ve seen him researching the types of music and how and when they originated, which sometimes makes no sense to me, but then I realise: Is this what is being called crazy about something?
I sometimes talk with him about music, and his answers surprise me. Conversations with him often circle back to music. When he listens to music, he doesn’t hear it; instead, he tries to absorb each detail of the song. He loves listening to all genres, but I feel the ones he is crazy about are classical and rock music.
I don’t know exactly how much the knowledge of music is helpful and how far it would take my brother. However, seeing him, I’ve realised that one needs to be passionate enough to learn something new. With time, patience and practice, we can achieve everything we aim for.

Sample Answer

To err is human. Today, I’m going to talk about a mistake I made when I was in 6th class.

One day my sister was quite unwell. She was suffering from fever. There was only one doctor in my village and there were no mobile phones at that time. The only way to call the doctor was to send someone to fetch him. Unfortunately, my father had gone somewhere.  My mother asked me to go to the doctor. Since it was quite cold and dark outside, I told her that I would fetch the doctor tomorrow.

In the night my sister’s condition deteriorated, her fever was touching the mark of 104-105 degree Fahrenheit. She started murmuring. That was the most difficult time for me and my mummy. I was cursing myself. If I had gone to the doctor on time, my sister would not have been in this situation.

I made this mistake without realizing that I was making a mistake. I was a child and I had no idea about how high fever can be life threatening for someone.

This incident affected me a lot. With God’s grace and my mother’s efforts, my sister survived. But, her complete recovery took a long time. Now, I am much more careful about health and I never ignore any kind of health problems.

IELTS Cue Card : Talk about something you lost and then found

IELTS Cue Card : Talk about something you lost and then found

You should say:

  • What it was?
  • How you lost it?
  • When you found it?
  • And explain how you felt about this incident.

Sample Answer

Today, I’d like to talk about an incident when I lost a valuable item. Fortunately, with some help I managed to find it later.

This happened around the autumn of 2019. The final semester of my Bachelor’s in Computer Science was about to be over and campus interviews for placements were in full swing. All students were instructed to carry their original academic documents with them for verification.

I had kept all the required documents in my laptop bag. Among them were original mark sheets, passing certificates, my passport, national identity card and birth certificate. Needless to say, the bag held some very precious cargo.

That day I had to give several interviews. After they were done, I was glad, for they went very well and now I could go and relax with my friends in the cafeteria. As planned, all my friends reached the cafeteria and there we discussed about our interviews and placement chances. Some of my funny friends imitated strict interviewers. At one point, we all were rolling with laughter.

Later that day when I reached home, I realized something; I had lost my laptop bag in all the commotion. My first reaction was to call up my best buddy, who then calmed me down and asked me where I had last seen my bag. Together we concluded I must have left the bag in the cafeteria itself. At that time, I was filled with dread, my mind was whirling with everything that could go wrong. Finally, we decided to check the cafeteria, the first thing in the morning.

The next day my friend met me at the cafeteria entrance and we described the problem to the manager. He was very responsive and he immediately directed the staff to find the bag. After trying hard, it was found under the sofa. Thank heavens! Getting it back was a big relief. I was grateful for everyone’s cooperation and understanding.

Suffice to say, this incident gave me quite a fright. Moreover, it taught me the meaning of “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone”, a lesson we will perhaps never be taught enough.

Some useful vocabulary words with meaning
commotion A sudden, short period of noise, confusion, or excited movement
whirling to (cause something to) turn around in circles
Suffice to be enough
fright an experience of fear that happens suddenly
