There is so much work that we all do but when it is all work and no play we surely get tired easily. Most of the people, hence figure out a way to relax a bit. Let us today have a look at a cue card that talks about ways a person can relax.

Describe a way to relax that you find effective.

You should say:

  • what you do
  • where & when you usually do this
  • who you usually do it with

and explain why this is relaxing for you.

Sample Answer One

I really like taking short breaks while I am working. So, after having worked for almost like an hour, I would go out of my seat and walk a little bit here and there, drink water and just completely close my eyes for some time and be proud of myself for the work that I have done for an hour.

I do it almost for everything. So, it could be while I am playing or working or for that matter while I am studying. It is very important for me because I believe that having a ten minutes break in every hour, not only allows me to push myself harder, it also helps me not to get drained by the kind of work that I do.

I am a software engineer and doing the relaxing thing makes me more committed and focused towards the work. Although, people go out and relax with their friends, I prefer doing this activity alone, so I have no one to talk to and can completely feel good about peace and silence and just go back to work with new mind.

The reason it works for me is because, I am not that sort of a person who can work a lot. But, then I have got dreams which I need to get fulfilled. This every hour break makes me feel as if I am having my quality time and I am able to relax a bit here and there. This allows me not to be exhausted or over whelmed by the work that I do.

Sample Answer Two

I love relaxing after a tiring day but for me the best way to relax is by playing badminton. So, every day after I have finished my work I go out to play badminton with my friends. It is almost exciting and relaxing because to be able to play the game well it is very important for me to forget about whatever has happened in the entire day and focus on what is happening at the present.

This exercise not only makes me good because it is a kind of physical activity but also refreshes because there is so much of mental activity involved in it. And then I with my friends take up those silly competitions, like who is going to win, how long can we play and things like where to hit the target. It is amazing and makes me feel good and prepared for the other day.

Also, when I am playing, it makes me feel as if I am having both, work life balance which helps me go out and do my work in a better way. Because, after the work I know that I do have time for myself and I can enjoy with my friends.

The reason I love it is because apart from just whiling away my time, I am actually doing a physical and a mental activity and it helps me to be able to remain fit and work better.

IELTS Cue Card # Course In College

College is the time when we shape ourselves. When we decide what are our areas of interest and what are the things that we want to do in our life. This is the time of becoming. Some do it by indulging in extra curricular activities, while others do it by taking some courses in college. Today, let us have a look at some of the cue card questions related to a course one took in college.

Describe a course you took in your college or university.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • When you took it
  • What you learned from this course

And explain why you took this course.

Sample Answer One

I remember we had a course in my Bachelors of UNIX. There were several other courses as well, but for some reasons I was fascinated by this course. It was great to learn UNIX, because understanding how it works made me understand how an operating system work and that in turn helped me in understanding how computers worked.

I took the course in my fourth semester of Bachelors in Technology. The course taught me how to write commands to make things work in the system and the commands were not the single lined or word commands. It was more like mixing and matching the commands to get the required output. There would be days when I would just worry about a single command and how to get a particular output. And then there were days in which I would break the entire code and try to run the code in pieces because of some error.

It was tough but it was fun. The feeling when the program ran or when I was able to solve that one problem, it was fun and nothing can take that feeling. I remember learning lot of things from this course and they are still in use by  me. But, what I learnt the most was how to learn things. It is not about settling in time and fixing the effort. It is more about working for it until you get the result. You need to solve those errors and bugs until you get the required result and it was a true and amazing lesson learnt.

When I look back at it, I think the reason that I took the course was because I fell in love with how simple commands dictate the entire computer industry and then it is about the permutation and combination of these simple commands that make up the entire big commands through which we are doing things. It was great I believe and every person should definitely learn the in and out of an operating system.

Sample Answer Two

I went to a college where we did not had any freedom to take courses of our choice but there was a event that took place for a length of around one month and I was part of it. Later on, I was awarded with a certificate for taking the course.

It was a travel event. So, the college needed volunteers who could travel around the city in weekends and get to know the details of the city. Not just the historical places that are there to visit, but the areas where poor people lived, the red light areas, the ones which no one would go to, meet people who no one would ever go and meet. I think for me it was a course because I believe no one can teach you better than experience. And for me that was a great experience.

I was part of a team, where I had with me two more people, one was a photographer and the other was a writer. We went on to meet people, see places, interact with different people, write down things, click photographs and then come back after two days and in the entire weekdays would go on writing about the events that happened in the weekends. It was an amazing experience, we came to know more about the city an in the mean while more about ourselves.
There were times when we felt like losing and the next moment was when we won. People initially did not wanted to talk to us and then we found out ways different to make them comfortable and get to know about their lives.

The one thing that I learnt from this course that perseverance is truly the key to success. If you are not persistent, there is no point of success.

IELTS Cue Card # Local Area

Describe a change that will improve your locality. You should say:

  • What is the change?
  • How the change works?
  • What kind of problems the change will solve?
  • How you feel about the change?
Sample Answer One

I live in the west of my city, the place where most of the middle class people reside. There are several good things about my society, from good roads, to nice neighborhood and then there is this beautiful view that we have. But, the one thing that sometimes gets very annoying is that there are very few street lights in the area. So, although, it is not complete darkness, it is very close to that only. And in times when it rains heavily driving on that road becomes really scary.

I want to bring in more street lights for the locality. My friend works in PDW i.e. Public Development Works, the department handling such issues. So, I have talked with her and she told that this has been a concern for the department as well and very soon they will solve the issue.

I think once we have got street lights, it will be much more safer to travel in that area. There are situations when it gets too late and for a female that gets even more frightening. No matter you are in car or a two-wheeler the chances of a crime happening and it is not only we who are victims. Often in the dim light, one is not able to see any street animal, who get killed in the run.

Changing this situation has been a great event for me. I got to know that the system is not too bad and that we also can make changes in our lives and sometimes in others as well.

Sample Answer Two

I live in a Ho Chi Minh City. My father is a businessman. The locality that we are staying is quite good. We have got park and then security guards, proper lights and almost every amenity that one can think of. However, there is one thing that often bugs me and it is the absence of society. Most of the people in our locality live so busy lives that they never get to gel with each other.

We as youngsters of our society felt the need of a more better belonging because there were times when even festivals would go out dry. So, we started meeting in parks with lot of tantrums and we would invite even the kids of our locality. We used to have parties where everyone started talking with each other and the best part was the parties were game based. So, we would play badminton, or football or sometimes held on debates on stuff.

With the news reaching to the elders, they started joining us whenever they had free time and with that people actually started to get to know each other. We realized that we have some of the greatest talents of our country and it was truly amazing.

Latest cue card Tip:
Given above is a Latest cue card on the improvements that can be made in the local area. Write down the points in not more than 3 minutes and then try to speak it as many times as possible. The best way would be to record your answer in mobile phone each time and figure out in the long run how you have improved.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card # Stress

Describe a stressful day at work.
You should say –

  • how the day started
  • how things went wrong
  • who were the people who were involved

Why was it stressful?

There are so many days that are stressful when I am not able to understand why things are the way they are and why am I not able to do things. Although, often these days very soon get replaced by much brighter day, I remember one particular day that started off with great promises but turned out to be a one kind of a hell, when I just couldn’t respond to anything.

I woke up at around 5, did go to jogging and by 7 started off my work. I worked till 9 in the morning on my blog and then got ready to reach office. On reaching office, I started working on the project and when at around 1, someone just told that there is some work that needs to be done and I am responsible for it. So, just when I was about to go for my lunch, I had to I had to wait and do the work. The work got completed by 2:20 and I had to go to the training from 2:45 to 5:30.

In between, there were calls from family and friends and I could not pick them up. Not only was I exhausted but when I thought that I would go out and relax with my friends, I met some rude and upset faces. It took such a long time to make them believe that I was truly busy, but the sour remained. It was that day, when I was left alone, completely exhausted by work and with no one to comfort me.

By the end of the day, I decided to just let go off the feeling and went on to read Archies comics and ended the day, laughing off and having a good night sleep.

Which would you choose: A stressful job with very high pay or a relaxing job with considerably low pay? Why?

I think it would depend on the situation in which I am. So, if I have the money and I am not in an urgent need of it, I would prefer a relaxing job. But, if the choice is given between two jobs out of which one is what I love to do  and the other is not, I would no matter how much stress is there, would go for a job that is close to my heart.

Do you suffer from stress when you have too much work to do?

Yes, sometimes I do. The most stressful days for me are the ones in which I have to work a lot and then there is no one whom I can talk to or fight with and comfort myself. I believe after every stressful or low moment, there should be a day where one can relax and just recharge oneself to be able to do more work.

How can you judge what is the right amount of stress for you?

There are times when I start crying for no reasons known and in those days I realize that I am stressed very much. Because, I don’t know the exact reason of my agony and it comes out in the form of pain. When things like these start happening at frequent times, I just realize that stress is getting over me. But, then there are times, when I am worried about something and I keep on working and going on about it, because I just am in so much fear of losing. I think stress of that kind is fine because it is very much motivating.

Do you keep your worries a secret from everyone?

Most of the times, yes I do. I don’t like troubling people with my issues but then there are times when things get out of my control and when that happen, I tend to share my sorrows with people who are very close to me. They are either my friends or sometimes I even write about it.
