IELTS Task 2 Essay

The usage of alternative forms of medicine is becoming increasingly popular. However, at best these methods are ineffective, and at worst they may be dangerous.

 

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Alternative medicine is thought to be older than conventional medicine and is prevalent worldwide. It is popular in different ways all over the globe and I feel that it is not at all useless or dangerous. I understand that both forms of medicine can be useful in their own manner.

Alternate medicine and its disapproval by the conventional medical community may be due to various reasons. Firstly, scientific research into such medicine is almost negligible, leading to a severe lack of concrete scientific evidence to support its claims. Furthermore, people try these kinds of treatments due to their word of mouth publicity.

On the other hand, the use of alternatives is backed with many strong arguments. There have been many real-life cases to prove that such medicines and therapies have a strong effect. This results in a very positive attitude of the patients, and assists in curing them in the long term. These are far from being dangerous and have almost negligible side effects. This results in no change being the worst outcome.

Moreover, such therapies usually consist of lengthy procedures that show their effects slowly with time and are more useful for long term or chronic ailments. In addition, one of the strongest arguments is the money that people are willing to spend upon alternative medicine. This would not have been the case if alternative medicine practices were harmful, or even ineffective.

In my opinion, both forms of medicine should be practiced. Even if conventional methods may be handy and better result oriented in cases such as injuries, alternative medicine has its own advantages. They have different areas of expertise and should be effectively used in different domains.

Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the world is facing today.

What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Global warming is clearly the biggest threat to Earth in modern times. This essay will discuss the reasons behind global warming and suggest probable solutions.

The major factors causing the warming of the earth are the excessive release of CO2 gas and deforestation. CO2  is a greenhouse gas that damages the ozone layer and is emitted from various sources, such as vehicular emissions or burning of fossil fuels in power plants. These sources emit thousands of tons of harmful gases into the biosphere each year. The vehicular emission rates are also drastically rising due to high demand for personal vehicles. This results in increased worldwide consumption of fuel and transportation. Lastly, forests house large reserves of carbon in various forms. Deforestation is causing even larger amounts of carbon dioxide to be released into the surroundings thereby causing the greenhouse effect.

However, there are potential approaches to take care of these issues or minimize the impacts. Firstly, governments need to reduce reliance upon petroleum products and advance in terms of alternative fuel choices. Additionally, people can create a positive influence by making changes in their lifestyle. Individuals can attempt to purchase vehicles with the best fuel efficiency, and possibly utilize their vehicle when extremely necessary while relying heavily on public transport. They can bring about a shift from the usage of non-renewable energy sources to alternative power sources. Lastly, little things like purchasing energy-efficient products, switching off unused devices around us and planting more trees also help a lot.

To conclude, global warming is a serious issue, and such steps should be taken by governments and individuals to reduce their effects. If this threat needs to be eliminated, this cause should become a priority for everyone.

Technology and its reach in human life have significantly increased over the past few years. This has had a lot of implications, including a dramatic increase in the number of children playing computer games. This essay will examine various impacts of this change and discuss possibilities to avoid any negative effects.

Talking about the positive aspects, playing computer games has numerous benefits. These can range from helping children develop cognitive skills to increase their logical reasoning. Games have developed into a whole industry. These have allowed children to test their abstract and logical thinking skills. Many of these games require children to follow various commands and try to solve complex problems with the use of logic. Such games are surely advantageous for a child’s mental progress.

On the other hand, people are raising concerns over the prolific use of violence and sanguinary elements that these games contain. These may be highly addictive, in the sense that they reward the players for being more violent, thereby setting a wrong example. Apart from being addictive, they contribute to arresting a child’s social development and lead to the inculcation of aggressive feelings of anger and hate in their thoughts and habits.

However, there are many steps that can be taken to minimize negative impacts. Firstly, video games are rated for different ages and parents can choose them for the children in order to avoid unsuitable content. Secondly, parents can limit the duration of playing games for the children to keep addiction at bay. Finally, parents should take an active interest in the children’s activities and encourage them to play outdoor games.

To sum it up, video games have a lot of advantages along with an array of disadvantages. Parents should supervise their children and take precautions to avoid any negative effects these might have on children.

Films form an integral part of our lives. Most of the people across all over the world love watching films, although of different genres. There are several movies that create an impact on our lives as an individual, there are even some that do impact the society in large. Well, then there are even some movies, that are purely for fun. This time let us have a look at some of the questions that can be asked related to films in the IELTS speaking section, part I.

Do you like watching films?

I do love watching films, but I am not a film maniac. So, you  will not find me every Friday standing outside any of the theatres looking for movies. Or for that matter, watching old movies on television or internet 24/7. Whenever a movie of great story does come in, say for example, barfi or an inspiring film like Chak De, I do go and watch them.

Do you prefer foreign films or Indian films?

I love watching both, the only thing that matters is that the story should be good. I like watching films in which you get your answers for leading a beautiful life. This does not certainly means I love motivational movies. but then even a romcom can teach you so much. So, for me the story matters, every thing else is secondary,

How often do you visit cinema for watching films?

For most part, I like watching films at my home under by blanket. But, when there are lot of my friends going out, I do company them. However, this does not happen very often. So, one can say, if the movie is really nice and we all friends want to have some fun together, we go to cinema.

How do people in your country react to cinema?

Oh! People in my country love cinema and it certainly plays a very important role in our lives. There are so many people who take advance tickets to watch films of their favourite starts. Also, there are people who would just bare standing in lines for the one ticket to watch a film. You could hear claps and then fights taking place or the teary eyes. So, yes people in my country do love cinema and feel connected to it.

What genre of movies do you really prefer?

i love romantic movies the most. For me, the emotion love is the most important emotion of all and I love it when two people fall in love with each other. Some of my favourite romantic movies have been, What happens in vegas, Notebook, crazy stupid love. But, apart from romantic movies, I also like watching comedy movies and sometimes the motivational movies, the ones based on true life incidents.

Which genre of movies do you try to avoid?

I really don’t like horror movies. Not primarily, because I get terrified but because I think movies are there to make you feel relaxed. For me, horror movies, give so much of emotion and excitement that it seems as if some work has been done.

Which was the first movie that you watched?

The first time I watched an entire movie was Stuart Little Our school took the students who had subscribed to the newspaper to a movie hall. For us, most of the class had subscribed. So, the entire class of VI B, that was my section, went to watch the movie in a cinema hall. It was an amazing experience, not only because it was the first time I was watching a movie but because with people I enjoy my school days.

What is your opinion on the people who blindly follow their favourite superstars?

In my opinion, blindly following superstars is like living in a falsehood. Because, when a person blindly starts following the other person, they somehow forget that they are individuals and they have their own identity. Their circumstances and people around are different from their superstars, leading them to a black hole from where it gets tough getting out.
