Books are a man’s best friend after dogs. Well, when nothing seems to work out the one thing that saves most of us are books. Some people like to read books that are biographies, or sometimes fiction, then non-fiction. Each individual has their own choice and this time we are looking at a cue card that talks about the preference of books of an individual.

Describe what kind of books you prefer reading. You should say –

• why do you like this genre?
• when did you first started reading?
• how did you start reading this genre?

also, explain if not this genre, which one else do you to read?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Books have been my favorite part of life for a long time. They have helped me to understand life better, take me out of depression at a time and made me laugh. I started reading autobiographies initially and went on to read fiction and then non-fiction. Having read the different genres, I have loved the autobiographies the most.

I think the main reason for my inclination towards autobiographies is because of the reason that I am able to relate to the people that it is about. For example, I already have read about Mahatma Gandhi, his deeds, the reason he is celebrated all over the country. Reading his autobiographies tell me the reasons for what he did. How he came into satyagraha. His opinion on how people reacted to his actions.

The first autobiography that I read was by mistake. I wanted to read something and could not find anything and ended up taking the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi. Having read the book, I thanked God for the book. But, if not autobiographies, I think I would have definitely read non-fiction.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Books have always been tough for me to hold grasp of. Reading a book for a course also requires a lot of my attention and willpower. For a very long time, the only books that I read were the course books but a few years back I chanced upon reading a book by Khalid Hosseini, The Kite Runner. That book changed my perspective on book reading for a real sense. It made an impact on me as an individual.

Since then I have read a lot of books, including fictions, non-fiction, and autobiographies. But the one genre that has struck a chord with me has been the fiction , other times the world of wars. It also sometimes takes me to the world of terrorism or the world of education. Fiction, the one genre that opens up the minds of individuals to an extent of no coming back.

But, if it was not fiction then I would have stuck with comics I believe. I have tried reading auto biographies and semi-biographies, but they do not connect with me well. My reason for reading comics has always been to either enjoy them or get a meaning out of them. Comics on the other hand provide me with both. They not only give me the reason to be happy but also help in understanding the real life in a better way.

Describe a television programme that you watch.

You should say:

• What kind of television programme it is
• What usually happens in the television programme
• Why you enjoy watching the television programme

And explain why you would recommend the television programme to the other people.

I don’t watch TV so often but whenever I find a chance I always try and watch a real documentary show called “Kings of Restoration”. It is featured on the History Channel. I used to team up with my dad as a child and watch it with uttermost fascination. It is a great show for anyone who has an interest in the glams of art and creativity.

The show starts with the announcement of what product they have received recently for restoration. Rick Dale, the owner and the host along with his team explores the product and tell us about its current condition and what ideas they have on fixing it. They get a variety of products from old broken vending machines to automobiles. They work hands in hands and efficiently to get the original raw parts and prepare the basic designs. The show telecasts the way they work on each of the old part. As a child this really impressed me.

I love watching the show for a list of reasons. This show holds memories with my dad. As both of us have a deep profound interest in the minimal working of stuff, we would often talk over our own suggestions and ideas while watching it. The television programme has helped me come up with lot of creative solutions for my old goods and helped me restore stuff that isn’t in use anymore. The best part about the show was always the ending scene when they finally give away the restored product to the owner and leaves everyone of us including the customer enthralled and amazed. I recommend this show to everyone as it’s a perfect Sunday afternoon show for both the young and old. It not only entertains the viewers but also provides lot of knowledge at the same time.

Describe a shop that recently opened in your city/country.

A store for the nomadic souls named “The Hippie Travel” has opened near my place recently. The shop is a definition of creative insights and new age ideas. The shop provides varieties of travel accessories and on-road needs.

The shop is located in the city centre  and has one branch. Due to the location, it is a easily noticed and appreciated by the passer-by’s. The shop is in reach from every nook and corner and even the opening hours are very flexible. This is a great stop-by for the youngsters and provides a wide range to choose from. Interestingly, it sells products from around the world and at a great bargain price.

They have an amazing range of sleeping bags and tents with different colour options. They have quirky luggage tags and souvenirs too. The typical crowd is the adventurous souls and people who like going to vivid places. They frequently visit the shop and get themselves satisfied. The options are broad and thus there are plenty of chances to get the right product as per their requirements. Moreover, people who need any specific products and cannot find them also visit this shop. If they still fail to acquire their stuff, the shopkeeper provides them with the option of ordering them from suitable places. This is of a great importance to them.

Recently, I had to visit the shop for getting a new rucksack for my recent trip. In fact, one of my cousins has suggested the place to me. I was mesmerised when I entered the store. They had amazing size and colour choices and I could find exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend this place to everyone. (282 words)

Speaking Task 2

Tell about a dish you want to cook.

• What it is?
• Why you want to cook?
• How will you cook?

 Sample Answer

I am a great food lover and love to cook for myself as well as for others. In order to learn cooking, I am not only watching YouTube videos, but also attending some short term cooking classes as well. I am a very creative person and cooking activities are a great way to express the creativity. Moreover, for me it is the best way to relieve stress. Therefore, I try to cook different types of cuisines at home.

Since, it’s my mother’s birthday tomorrow, so I have planned to cook Shahi paneer for the occasion. I really want to surprise her by making her favourite dish and that too on her birthday. It is a North Indian dish and a perfect recipe for any occasion. The recipe of making Shahi paneer is very simple. In a large saucepan, I will first fry the small paneer cubes and will soak it in a bowl of water. This will not only make the paneer cubes softer, but will also remove the excess oil from it.

Next, I will put the pan on medium flame with 2 large tablespoons of ghee in it. After that I will add the chopped onions, ginger, green chillies along with ginger garlic paste. 5 minutes later , I will also add some chopped tomatoes and green cardamoms to it and will cover the pan with a lid. After cooking it for about 10 minutes, I will add the beaten curd and cook for another 5 minutes, and pour a cup of water into the pan and cook for another 2 minutes. When the gravy will be cooked and cooled at room temperature, I will blend it till smooth and keep aside.

Then, I will heat some ghee in another pan and add the gravy in it along with red chilli powder, garam masala powder, tomato ketchup and salt. I will boil it till the gravy thickens. Next, I will add the paneer cubes and milk in it and will cook for another 5 minutes. Then, I will garnish the recipe with chopped coriander leaves and grated paneer. I hope with this small gesture of mine, I will be able to bring a smile on my mother’s face.
