  • give details about the website

Why do you love the website?

Sample Answer

I have been using internet for now about 6 years, out of which I think 3 years I have used it extensively, visiting lot of websites and doing research and lots of fun work. There have been many sites which I love to visit, but I think the one that I go back to when I am not able to find anything else, is youtube.com. I believe it is one of the most amazing sites to be made in the history, because there are so many opportunities over there. You can learn lot of things from the website and then you can earn lot of money from it.

I have been using youtube.com since past four years, I believe. With so many videos about events being uploaded onto it, it becomes very exciting to use it. So, there is this video about Steve jobs and you can hear him. His Stanford speech, his interview about Macintosh and his opinion about how life is lived. It is exciting because it seems as if you are actually interacting with the other person. And then there are video lectures by some great personalities. You get to learn and the best part is that it is for free. You learn because you want to and you enjoy it. I think the freedom that youtube gives is completely exciting.

Even more, people can now upload their videos and if they are able to bring in lot of viewers, google pays them and someone who has talent, it is such a great opportunity. You get to be your own boss and be creative.

favorite website

Youtube.com was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim and the domain was activated on February 14,2005. The idea behind the founders was to be able to upload videos and share it with their friends. What was thought to be just a website where people could simply share their videos, turned out to be a great startup. It was in around 2006 that google acquired the website and since then it has been merged together with lots of google products like google+.

I think what makes me and so many people fall in love with the website is surely the freedom that it gives. You get to learn things and implement them and then earn lot of money out of it.

How long have you been using Internet?

I started using internet when I stepped into the college, but I remember, it was two years from then that I actually started using internet for lot of things. So, I would just go out and listen to lot of those videos and read the Wikipedia pages. For the initial two years, I used internet only for facebook and when I had to make presentations, but later in college I came to know about the importance it plays in our lives and have been using it extensively since then.

How has internet changed your lifestyle?

I would say it has made me more enlightened. So, earlier I was limited to the resources that I had, so the teachers and the people I used to meet in daily life. But now, it is more like, the approach from just adjusting with the average has changed to going for excellent and becoming excellent. There are no boundations anymore.

What do you think could be the possible uses of internet in the future?

My personal opinion is that our lives will revolve around internet in the future and that is for sure. So, we will be able to see automatic cars that work entirely on internet. It might be possible to figure out the emotions of the other person, just by scanning their face to the scanner and internet will find out the results. So, may be people will get to know what the other person is feeling. It might even be possible that we are able to figure out what is necessary to buy in a particular month, and may be internet will help us in finding out a good budget.

IELTS Cue Card: Talk with a stranger

Describe a situation when you had a talk with a stranger.

You should say:

  • who the person was
  • where you met him/her
  • what the conversation was about
  • and explain why you found the conversation exciting.
Sample Answer:

I enjoy meeting new people. Today I’m going to talk about a time when I met a stranger and had an interesting conversation with him.
On weekends I go to Rishikesh for learning yoga.  I normally travel by bus as the buses are quite regular and comfortable. But, on last Sunday, bus drivers were on a one day strike. So, I had to drive in the morning. This time there were many foreigners in the yoga centre. All of us did yoga for about 2 hours. Thereafter, we went to the dining hall for breakfast. Naturally, I started interacting with the person sitting next to me. He was from Scotland and had come to India to complete a 120-hour yoga course. His name was Thomson.
Somehow, the focus of our conversation went to festivals and celebrations in our respective countries. He shared some interesting information about the New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Scotland. It’s called Hogmanay. The origins of this word are unclear but it’s the biggest Scottish celebration.

Many traditions like cleaning the house and singing etc. are observed on this auspicious day. The most important of them is first-footing, where families wait for the first person to visit their homes at midnight. Surprisingly, the first foot must be a man or a boy with dark hair, not a woman. It’s believed that the first foot brings fortune to the family for the New Year.  If you are the first foot, you should carry three things: food, coal and something to drink.

I found this conversation very exciting because I didn’t know anything about Hogmanay. The way we celebrate the New Year is very different from how it is celebrated in Scotland. This conversation gave me a glimpse of the Scottish culture. Altogether, the novelty of this information and his friendliness made it a memorable interaction.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I am a bibliophile and love reading all genre of books. Today I am going to talk about a book that I loved reading. Although there are many I would like to read again, but I think Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography, ‘My Experiments with the Truth’ has by far been the most impressive book that I have read. I remember I went to get a novel to read and randomly picked this one because I wanted to read Gandhi’s opinion on the entire freedom struggle. It was back in 2014, during my last year of college when I read this book.

The book is Gandhi’s autobiography, it includes special highlights on events that had a major impact on Gandhi’s life story. The book gives an inside view on how Gandhi shaped himself, what sacrifices he made and how he stood by truth even in the darkest of times.

One such event includes the day Gandhi fell ill, the doctors advised him to take some tea as it would help him in recovering faster. It was almost essential for him in his medical condition. But earlier he had pledged that he would not consume meats, spices, eggs or tea, as at the time some research suggested it to be harmful to the body. No matter what the doctors had to say, Gandhi did not consume his tea. I was fascinated by the strong determination the man had.

The story revolves around his life and gives an inner view on the reasons behind the actions taken by him as a leader. I loved the book because it taught me the most important lesson of my life: one should always speak the truth and be ready to die for it.

Mahatma Gandhi was surely a man of strong and true character and in my viewpoint, anyone who reads this novel surely brings home the idea of being a better person.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I would like to talk about an extracurricular activity class that my father made me join during the summer holidays of class X. It was the first time I had to get out of my comfort zone and think beyond marks. We were a bunch of forty children and every day we used to have a different kind of activity. One such day, our teacher announced that we will be having a storytelling the class. In it, we were challenged to come on stage and make a story out of three words, she provided.

I was the last person to go for my story and my words were ball, pen, and books. We were supposed to speak for five minutes and I clearly remember standing one minute in absolute silence figuring out how to connect the three words and make a story. My story started off with a girl who was a cricket player and she is a bowler, her family did not support her much. So, when her parents asked her study, she would sit down and write stories about cricket or read books of renowned cricketers and then connected the ball, pen, and books in her life.

For that particular story session, I was standing there with my eyes closed and saying whatever came to my mind. Initially, the connection between the three was difficult for me to gras[. So, I picked up a word and carried on with the story. Once my turn was over, I opened my eyes and saw people cheering for me. I loved it. It was the first time someone told me that I must go on reading and be a storyteller some day. I was deliriously happy and extraordinarily excited.

I would like to talk about a time when I had to step out of my comfort zone to join a table topics contest which made me think out of the box and work flat to win it.

Toastmasters is an international organization and I had just joined when someone told me about a table topic contest. As part of it, each speaker had to come on stage and speak for 2 minutes on the topic provided by the contest chair. Each year the contest draws people from across all the clubs and it was really competitive and challenging for me. Therefore, when I was awarded the winner, I was deliriously happy.

The goal of the challenge was to speak for two minutes and portray the speech in a well-structured way. It is a competition, there were many other experienced people present and I was obviously terrified. What made me think too much about it was that it was spontaneous. So, the only thing that mattered was that moment and how well you can use it and explain your story. I woke up that day for the entire night and practiced around 100 table topics and by the end of 90th, I was broken down.

Although many congratulated me for the victory, I still believe that the moment I decided to go for practicing the 100 table topics, I had already won. The victory was just a cherry on the cake.
