IELTS Cue Card #Describe a course that you wish to study

Describe a course that you wish to study in the future.
You should say:

  • What the course is?
  • When and where you would like to take this course?
  • What skills and qualifications are required for this course?

And explain why you want to study it.

Sample Answer

I would love to partake in an animation and gaming course. Even though it’s true that I never imagine myself going for a Bachelor’s in Arts, this seems like something I would enjoy.

I would like to do this course somewhere in Germany – probably next year in my summer holidays. The reason being that I spent my childhood in Germany. The love and affection which I have for this place is hard to describe in words. I can’t forget the time which I spent there. It’s my dream to go back to Germany and relive those moments.

Coming to the skills and qualifications required for this course, a good command on English and effective computing skills are the two main criteria for this course. Sometimes, applicants have to submit a portfolio of their drawings.

Talking about the reasons why I want to take this course, as a child I was very fond of cartoons, I used to draw my impressions of the characters in my school notebook, often getting scolded for doodling. And whenever I went to visit my cousin-brother’s house, we used to play video games all the time. My mother and aunt never understood what we found so fascinating about these immersive games.

But, I guess the biggest appeal is that there is prominent and existing growth in this field. It’s a very new and fresh, growing concept, especially at a time like this when research and development have come to a standstill, this field has just begun. It offers new challenges and certainly new opportunities. I wish to be a part of this progression.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO-

We all generally follow the same conventional career oriented path in our lives as taught by our predecessors. Schooling followed by graduation or a higher degree and then engage in a job till retirement. This is the verifiable secure trajectory to earn a good living. During this journey, sometimes, we shift our engagement to a short term course or workshop, which brings value addition, either in our personal lives or professional or both. Recently, I took up a month long workshop on making incense sticks.

My father is a very religious person. He often used to complain about the deteriorating quality of incense sticks. One fine day, my friend called me up and discussed about his start-up venture of incense sticks. He has already expanded his supplies twice in just a period of 6 months. On my inquiry, he replied that he learnt about it in an NGO based in Dehradun. It appeared reasonably sensible to me to take up this 1-month long course and that too free of costs, considering the complaints by my father and a bright business opportunity in this religiously overwhelmed country.

After completing my course, I was in a position to make different sized sticks with different ingredients, quality and incense. You can say, I was equipped with every trait of incense stick manufacturing from my first day itself. Before taking it up as a commercial idea, first thing I did was, to prepare a bundle of sticks for my father, having his favourite aroma of Jasmine flowers. My father felt very happy after that. Since I am studying in my final year right now and feels myself capable enough to earn a good job next year, I am in no hurry to take up the incense sticks venture but definitely, I have added a value in productive sense which can be utilized any time in life, even as a hobby.

As I have mentioned, this workshop is a very short duration type, with no charges. This is easily accessible at this NGO Prayas located at Raipur road. One can register digitally too, but one has to come to the venue for workshop session.

Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Which extra course should one take up?

Sample answer: It all depends upon the present occupation of an individual. If a person is a student, he has ample of time to get engaged in long term courses adding value to his personality. It can even be a vocational course intended as a hobby or pure fun like clay pottery, wood craft and all. They will serve as an addition to your versatile skills. For a grown up working adult, it may not be feasible to get enrolled in a longer course so they should classify the right courses at right time. Expenditure involved and relative value addition should be proportionate.

Q. 2 What is your opinion about singing and dance academy for children and adults?

Sample answer: Well, it depends on an individual’s interests and inherited talents. If a parent sees the potential talent and inclination in a child, he should enroll him in that academy. We should not just impose on them for the sake of current trend. Similarly, an adult can join such course for his physical fitness, as dancing involves exertion. Sometimes, even the late comers after can age, can pursue their interest at a later stage in life. This makes them feel happy about themselves.

Q. 3 Do you think every course adds value to you?

Sample answer: No, I don’t think every course can do that. That’s why I was stressing on the utilitarian aspects or for seeking genuine pleasure in following a passion. Pursuing a course, that gives you no momentum, either in professional sense or in personal sense, will be a sheer waste of time. Therefore, one should clearly define his priorities before taking up one.

You should say:

  • When did you go and where?

  • What did you do there?

And how was your experience.

IELTS Cue Card #Describe a place in a village that you visited

Sample Answer :

Gandhiji once said that soul of India rests in its villages. Villages, in true essence, represent the actual aboriginal habitations. Earlier, there used to be a remarkable difference in the access of amenities between a village and a city. But, over the time, with globalization and digital media, the difference has shrunk to the bare minimum and villages along with their suburbs hold every item of necessity and luxury. Still, they remind of their rustic routine and scenic beauties with ample of open spaces in fields. I visited my village the last Diwali. I heard a lot about art and craft fair, organized by the locals of few neighbouring villages on the eve of Diwali. It was a 3 hrs journey from my hometown.

I went along with my close friend, whom I informed about the festivity in advance. He was my college mate and like me, he too was overly interested in exploring the village culture and traditions. We together went in my car. We were received by my relatives living there with great warmth. After that we were offered the traditional village winter food at home, which we both enjoyed thoroughly.

It was noon then. After taking food, we went on to stroll around the village. I took my friend round the corner, to see the open fields. They were, at that time, laden with wheat harvest still in the ripening stage. Thereafter, we played with cattle and stray dogs. Watching crimson sunset with the clear horizon past the fields was a beautiful experience. In evening, we went to the place where this fair was organized. Already, it had turned into an entertainment zone with the shouts of vendors and exciting shrieks of children, eating sweets and riding different swings. Artefacts that were being sold, were generally made up of mud or wood. Some metal articles were also present.

It went till 10pm. Fair was organized amid the brilliant fireworks played on that panoramic evening. I was too absorbed in that peculiar scent, emanating from the households and cattle sheds in evenings. We bought some beautiful craft articles and ate jalebis prepared out of desi ghee. It was, indeed, a great bash for us. We had finally witnessed the lively village fiesta on Diwali, which made me tremendously joyful.

STRONG WORDS

Suburbs surrounding area: In suburbs of Dehradun, we can easily find wild animals.
Panorama wide view: Scenic photos usually contain the panoramic view of landscapes.
Dwindle diminish rapidly: rate of population growth in our country will dwindle in coming years.
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do you like going to villages?

Sample answer: Yes, after a prolonged exposure to noisy and polluted cities, I always wish to go to quite surroundings of the village. Although, long electricity outages and lack of city comforts start pinching after a few days stay but I always wish to visit a village intermittingly.

Q. 2 What changes do you witness in villages nowadays?

Sample answer: Villages have been getting their facelift for the past few years. Every home in village, now has a toilet and bathroom. Even the govt was very keen on it for personal hygiene. Nearby towns have started including almost every facility, that is available in big cities. Literacy rates have improved significantly and students are selected in competitive exams from villages too. Pucca houses are built in villages nowadays. Broadband connection is reaching there, which in turn makes villagers aware of the latest trends and styles. Therefore, villages are no more the representations of backwardness and obsoleteness.

Q. 3 Why do you think people migrate from villages?

Sample answer: Primarily, people migrate from villages in search of better livelihood opportunities. In villages, there is a lack of infrastructure and apt productive facilities, due to which there is a great pressure on farming resources. To easen this pressure and earn a decent living, people travel to cities.

Q. 4 Do you think urbanization has destroyed the spirit of villages?

Sample answer: Yes, I strongly feel that rapid urbanization had severely damaged the villages’ image and spirit. Organic solidarity, simple lives, intense cooperation are the virtues of bygone days only. Noiseless pollution free lanes in a village is a rarity to be seen today. Tradition of joint families and livestock domestication is also giving way to the individual style of living. Urbanization, definitely has the advantages too but govt should have been careful in sketching the nation’s growth trajectory in such a way so as not to encroach upon the fertile village ecosystem, which used to have its own unique sustainability.

Q. 5 What do you think is the future of villages?

Sample answer: Villages, with their true character and flavour, are already dwindling at a rapid pace. These are, in turn becoming the extensible arms of the neighbouring towns and cities. This process is Rurbanization, which encompasses the physical territories of a rural area into the folds of urbanization. Therefore, we might be calling some places as villages in the future but they will merely be the reflections of cities only.

Sample Answer

I live in Dehradun city which is the state capital of Uttarakhand. My city is a beautiful place to be and is full of natural beauty being situated amongst the hills. It was announced as a capital around ten years ago, and hence it is suffering from many issues such as decreasing quality of life and environmental pollution of all kinds.

A quaint town before being named as a state capital, it was an unplanned hamlet that went through a rapid and unplanned expansion and industrialization.

The main reason for these pollutions is overpopulation and rapid and unplanned industrialization of this city. The city has seen a population explosion with an increase of more than one million people in the last ten years.

This has caused a huge pollution problem all over the city. People are using more resources, generating more waste, using more private vehicles, and causing the environment to degrade quickly.

The industries and factories beside the rivers and streams dump their waste directly into these waterbodies causing water pollution. The rapid deforestation is causing soil erosion and air pollution. The huge mounds of waste dumped by people are causing soil pollution due to the chemicals seeping into the soil and the groundwater. Vehicular emissions are rising at a fast pace, causing the release of toxic pollutants and gases into the air.

If steps are not taken to prevent pollution immediately, the city and its residents would succumb to diseases. The most important step is to create public awareness. Without awareness and strict determination, we would not be able to prevent such issues.

I remember travelling alone to Bhubaneswar once from New Delhi on train. It was a long 24 hours journey and initially I was so perforated that I decided opening a novel to read. It was Steve Jobs biography and while I was reading it a girl sitting at the opposite berth asked me if I was fan of Apple. I told her my interests in the shaping of Apple and we had a great conversation on Steve Jobs and how Apple shaped the world around.

We talked about the Microsoft and Apple war and then the obvious, Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. It was interesting because there were so many laughing points and then we drifted from Microsoft and Apple to India and what we as the so called youth can do something good for the country. We then shared our travel stories and it was pretty amazing. She was working for TCS in Kolkata and it was pretty amazing.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO-

We often come across so many people at home, work and society, in general. Communication, verbal, is generally conveyed in order to give meaning to our meetings and life. When this communication happens with a known person on a particular topic or in an aligned manner, it becomes a conversation. Most of the times, conversation winds around the familiar topics like politics, weather, family and all but sometimes, they dig on some intriguing topics. One such interesting conversation, that I had had with my friend was regarding duality in spirituality. His name is Amit and he is a very close friend of mine.

Last summer, I went with my best friend Amit ,to Himalayas. We were on a trek route above Mussorie, walking the altitude of nearly 10 kms on that particular day. We had those camping tents with us to stay anywhere, in any terrain, whenever we felt like taking a break. Well, after a long stretch of continuous trekking, we reached to a plateau like broad elevation, where we decided to pitch our tents. It was evening by that time and with the bonfire lit by our sides, we commenced our discussion of God and metaphysics.

Unarguably, intriguing mystic things fascinate every one of us. Discussion about God is one such open ended discussion, where it is difficult to sum up conclusively. It was only recently, that we have found this vibrating new inclination within us, to delve deep into the abstract discussions of metaphysics and even paranormal. Miles of away from the usual city traffic and lights, camping, just two of us, in the heart of that dense Himalayan forest, was in itself an adventure calling for the unknown. On the top of that, conversation about surreal, paranormal phenomena was adding the much needed thrill for such a camping. I could sense that heartfelt titillation along with the warmth of the fire. Little after then, we could see the sky studded with so many bright stars, amiss in cities. So, all in all, beauty of those surroundings tinged with our mystic conversation, was defining the moments in a unique sense of pleasure and utter satisfaction.
