Some people say that supermarkets and manufacturers should reduce the amount of products which include lot of packaging. Others say that we should be responsible and avoid the products which have a lot of packaging.
Discuss both the views and give your opinion.

Sample Answer

Large quantities of plastics are used in various forms in the packaging industry. Some sections of society believe that companies should limit the amount of plastics being used while others believe that individuals can make a difference by saying no to goods that require a lot of packaging. In the given paragraphs, I will discuss both the views before giving my opinion.

On one hand, manufacturing units should be made aware of the harmful effects of using packaging material on the environment. Plastic is the leading cause of pollution and the fact that it takes thousands of years to fully degrade in itself explains why its use should be regulated. The world is already witnessing environmental degradation and plastic is undoubtedly a major contributor. Majority of the plastic ends up in the world’s oceans and it has had detrimental effects on the marine life. From affecting the ecosystem to being responsible for extinction of species, we can say that, the effects of plastics on our environment are anything but positive.

On the other hand, consumers should take matters into their own hands and reduce the consumption of products which require more packaging. Moreover, less demands for such products will directly result in limited manufacturing and reduced sales. The use of plastics will also curtail significantly. Certainly, this will not only compel supermarkets and industries but also encourage them to make changes in their packaging policy.

To sum up, companies and individuals both are equally responsible for the excessive usage of plastics.  Users should be made aware of the catastrophic effects of this artificial material and statutory warning should be displayed on all such kinds of products. Manufacturers must also look for suitable alternatives. Limiting plastic consumption is the need of the hour and effective steps must be taken to curb this menace.

Alma Mater is a place where one not only learns how to gain conceptual and theoretical knowledge but also to project himself by getting adequate training in personality development. Besides this, various extracurricular activities are taught to the students which are continued throughout life. However, I personally believe that the school does not teach us the traditional and moral values.The reason being that a child spends only around six hours in school and the rest at home.

Moreover, this is something which cannot be taught. It is imbibed in a human being as he/she grows with his family, siblings and neighborhood. This includes respecting our cultural values, giving due regards to women, elders and abiding the law of the land. A human being’s character builds up as he learns these peculiar qualities while growing up.

It is the prime responsibility of parents to set good examples for their children. I myself learnt these values from my parents and grandparents. These are to be absorbed as one grows witnessing his family members and elder people. These have become a permanent feature of my personality and I use them in my day to day life. Be it my home or my workplace or the time when I’m commuting in a metro train. I try to be as considerate and compassionate as possible while dealing with the old and the women.

The busy schedule of parents nowadays is depriving our generations of these values which are of paramount importance to the individuals and the society as a whole. If these values are not taught, it will lead to creation of a misguided youth who will not be the responsible citizens of society. A person may be successful in his career, which makes him financially strong but till the time he is not respectful to the society he is not a responsible citizen of the nation.

Dear Kanye,
Finally after waiting for ages for my visa, I received it in the mail day before yesterday. I am glad to let you know that I’ll be leaving for Canada on 3rd November and it’d be pretty helpful if you can get your old pal of the airport. The feedback you gave me on maritime engineering and the career prospects seemed too irresistible so, after extensive research I decided on the same course. As you must be well aware I have enrolled in the same university as yours however, I’ll be studying at a different campus.
I had a few things in mind that can be taken care of before I arrive there. I’d really appreciate it if you can help a brother land a part time job. It’s pretty expensive in Toronto and I’d like to be more self dependent so I think it’s high time I start working and managing my finances. Also the dormitory will be available from the 6th so would you be able to accommodate me for a couple of days?
You can ask your employer or maybe some friends of yours can recommend me at their workplace. From what I’ve read on the net, the format of C.V is quite different too so I’ll mail you my resume and can you please help me edit it accordingly? The local newspapers dish out recruitment ads too. Maybe you can have a look there and let me know if something worthy comes up.

“Prison is the only truly effective form of punishment, because it separates criminals from society.” To what extent do you support this view? You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.

There is no doubt that we need to find effective forms of punishment for criminals and also find ways to protect citizens from the threat of crime. I personally feel that prison is one of the many options we should have at our disposal but is not always the most effective.
Firstly, I do not accept that all criminals need to be separated from society. Juvenile and minor offenders can be punished through fines, community service or other non-custodial means. This is cheaper than prison and prevents the damage to the criminal’s family which in itself could generate further social problems. Furthermore, by keeping these small-scale criminals in society, we can try to rehabilitate them, for example through training or education programmes. This will help to reduce re- offending in future.
Besides this, if offenders are believed to be a threat to their fellow citizens, there are ways of containing them such as electronic tagging, curfews or regular reporting to the police. Such methods have been shown to be effective in reducing criminal behaviour and are themselves quite a strong punishment, as they restrict an offender’s freedom greatly. Finally, we should remember that prisons are to some extent ‘schools of crime’ and in many cases prisoners end their jail terms as more capable and determined criminals than when they entered.
Of course, it is true that in certain cases we need to both punish criminals and isolate them from other people. I recognise that violent or dangerous people need to be imprisoned – yet I believe this applies to a small minority of instances.
To conclude, I feel that prison is a last resort in cases where there is no alternative. This does not make it the only effective punishment, but rather the most severe among a variety of possibilities.
