  • What the place is
  • Where it is located
  • What is the historical significance of the place
  • And describe your experience of the place.
Sample Answer

I have been travelling frequently for the past one year and in this time, I have visited many places of historical significance. There are many places that have blown my mind away with their architecture and historical significance but none so more than the Ajanta and Ellora caves.
The caves are an ancient monument that date back to 2nd century BCE. They are approximately 30 in number however, more were added to them later on in the coming centuries. According to historians they are monasteries and worship halls of Buddhists monks. They have greatly influenced Indian art that followed in the coming years.
They are located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra (Western India). The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures which are very well preserved. They are first of their own kind as experts say the paintings and gestures made by the sculptures show emotions. Vivid colours were used to make wall paintings while fine clay was used to make statues.
There are several accounts mentioning the caves in the history however it was not until the British rule in 18th century that they were discovered hidden in the forest. They are a UNESCO world heritage site and have had a strong influence on artefacts as well in the spread of Buddhism in south East Asia. They were used as monasteries for monks who were travelling around spreading Buddhism so apart from cultural significance it also has a lot of religious importance too.
Well it was very mesmerising to be honest. The caves are still very well preserved and to see such art and different colours being used in it during that time not only describes the importance of colours in our life, but also how advanced Indians were in art and craft during those times. As someone who is fond of history all I can say is, I was mind blown by those caves and no amount of splendid photography can do justice to such marvellous structures.

IELTS CUE CARD: A TOY YOU LIKED IN YOUR CHILDHOOD

IELTS CUE CARD: A TOY YOU LIKED IN YOUR CHILDHOOD

Talk about a toy you liked in your childhood.
You should say:

  • What it was?
  • Who gave it to you?
  • What it looked like?
  • Explain why it was a special toy for you?
Sample Answer

Toys are extremely precious for children and they are possessive about their favorite ones. As a child, I was lucky enough to have quite a few of them but there was one which I absolutely adored. It was a Barbie doll which was gifted to me by my parents.

I still remember that first advertisement of Barbie dolls in my country when they were just launched by Leo Mattel in India. It had a lovely music and displayed “the Happy Birthday Barbie”, which was wearing a pink gown with white polka dots. The doll had long golden hair and was even wearing matching pink sandals. I saw the ad every time it appeared on the TV and longed to have that doll myself. I was after my parents to get it for me which I didn’t get for a long time. Finally, I was gifted the very same doll by my parents.

I just loved everything about it- the dress, the hair and its beautiful features. I would comb it, bathe it and even made it sleep in the night. It was a special toy as it was different and unique as compared to any other doll available in those days. None of my friends had a Barbie which made me a proud owner of this English doll. There were extra dresses for Barbie with matching foot wear also available in the market and it was fun to change the dresses and make different hair styles. I spent most of my time playing with Barbie whenever i was home and it became my favorite possession.

Speaking Task 2: Tell about a dish you want to cook.

Speaking Task 2

Tell about a dish you want to cook.

  • What it is?
  • Why you want to cook?
  • How will you cook?
 Sample Answer

I am a great food lover and love to cook for myself as well as for others. In order to learn cooking, I am not only watching YouTube videos, but also attending some short term cooking classes as well. I am a very creative person and cooking activities are a great way to express the creativity. Moreover, for me it is the best way to relieve stress. Therefore, I try to cook different types of cuisines at home.

Since, it’s my mother’s birthday tomorrow, so I have planned to cook Shahi paneer for the occasion. I really want to surprise her by making her favourite dish and that too on her birthday. It is a North Indian dish and a perfect recipe for any occasion. The recipe of making Shahi paneer is very simple. In a large saucepan, I will first fry the small paneer cubes and will soak it in a bowl of water. This will not only make the paneer cubes softer, but will also remove the excess oil from it.

Next, I will put the pan on medium flame with 2 large tablespoons of ghee in it. After that I will add the chopped onions, ginger, green chillies along with ginger garlic paste. 5 minutes later , I will also add some chopped tomatoes and green cardamoms to it and will cover the pan with a lid. After cooking it for about 10 minutes, I will add the beaten curd and cook for another 5 minutes, and pour a cup of water into the pan and cook for another 2 minutes. When the gravy will be cooked and cooled at room temperature, I will blend it till smooth and keep aside.

Then, I will heat some ghee in another pan and add the gravy in it along with red chilli powder, garam masala powder, tomato ketchup and salt. I will boil it till the gravy thickens. Next, I will add the paneer cubes and milk in it and will cook for another 5 minutes. Then, I will garnish the recipe with chopped coriander leaves and grated paneer. I hope with this small gesture of mine, I will be able to bring a smile on my mother’s face.

  3. Pay attention to timing; do not spend too long on one passage or question.

  6. Do not panic if you do not know anything about the subject of the text; all the answers can be found in the text.
  7. The word(s) you use must be taken from the Reading text; you must not change the form of the word(s) in the text.
  8. Do not worry if there is a word that you do not understand – you may not need to use it.
