Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card) DESCRIBE A HOUSE OR APARTMENT YOU LIKE TO LIVE IN

You should say:

  • What is it like?
  • Where would it be?
  • Why would you like to live in this house/apartment?
  • How do you feel about this house/apartment?
Sample Answer

Home is where the heart is and having a own house is on the top of my bucket list. Ideally, I don’t fantasize about living in a house that is too spacious. Rather, I’d love to reside in an abode that allows me to have my peace of mind all day long.

Firstly, it will be a one-storied bungalow inspired by the design of the Victorian Era. I want my house to be on the slap bang of the city, surrounded by nature. The covered area should be 2000 sq. Ft and it would have 5 rooms with one master bedroom. Every room would have a balcony from where beautiful views of snow- covered mountains is visible. There should be enough empty space around so that I can have a perfect view of the mesmerizing surroundings.

Apart from this, I am really desiring that my house should be loaded with all sorts of mod cons. Including, a gym, a gigantic pool, a game Centre with a home theatre with recliners and a table tennis table to help me enjoy my time during my free time. At the top of it, I really desire a large L- shaped kitchen with a glass cabinet, dishwasher and a 12- seater dining table. Finally, in the open space there should be separate parking slots for the 4 wheelers.

I would love to reside in this apartment because it will be filled with all the comforts anyone could dream of. Besides, it would allow me to stay close to nature and far away from hustle and bustle of city.

IELTS Cue Card: A book someone recommended

A book someone recommended, that you would like to read again.

  • what kind of book
  • when did you read it first
  • why was it recommended to you
  • why would you like to read it again
Sample Answer:

I prefer reading in my leisure time. Today, I would like to speak about a book hat was recommended to me. I found it quite insightful and would love to read it again, whenver time allows me to do so.

The name of the book is Onward. It is written by Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, America’s leading coffee company and coffee house chain. This book falls under the genre of Business and Leadership.

In the Year 2010, I was working for Cocoberry, India’s first frozen yogurt brand. That’s when I came across the book as my company’s CEO gifted it to all employees and suggested us to read it. In this book, Howard shares the remarkable story of his return and the company’s ongoing transformation under his leadership. He reveals how during one of the most tumultuous economic times in history, Starbucks again achieved profitability and sustainability.

It’s been 2 years since I read this book. I’d like to go through it again. The main reason behind this is the beautiful manner in which the book is written. It keeps you motivated and tells you how not to lose hope in tough times. It includes information about the time when Howard comes to terms with his limitations and how he evolves his leadership style during that time. It represents his central leadership philosophy: It’s not just about winning, but the right way to win. It gives the readers a sense of hope that no matter how tough times get, the future can be just as or more successful than the past.

Q.

How does the literature help you understand the culture of a particular place?
Ans: Books have been the source of knowledge from the ancient times and they have acted as a medium of passing information. They have known to be an authentic source of information be it related to culture, science, medicine, history etc. culture has known to evolve overtime, being passed on generation to generation. And the best way to understand about the culture of a new place is to read about it through the books.

Talking or listening to someone might help you to an extent in understanding about the culture, but that will be a version of his or her understanding or of someone who he/she might have heard from. Thus, the authenticity could never be really gauged and relied upon. Ergo, the need of writing literature, in the ancient times. It was the prime responsibility of the historians to write the literature in such a manner that it could be referred to and easily understood by the masses as and when required, by the common masses and by those who were yet to come.

Q.

Why is it important for parents and adults to read books to their children?
Answer: A child’s mind is a clean slate, and it is up to the parents and adults what to fill it up with. Books are the vast source of knowledge and educating your kids with them is the best way to nourish their mind and help it grow. Reading books to your kids helps in enhancing their knowledge, creativity/ imagination, listening skill as well it helps in bonding the family as a whole.

IELTS Speaking – Clothes You Like To Wear On Special Occasions

IELTS Speaking about Clothes

Clothing, also known as apparel, attire or clothes is a collective term for items worn on the body. Wearing clothes is restricted to human beings and is a feature of all human societies. The amount and type of clothing worn depend on body type, gender, social and geographical considerations. Apart from making us look and feel good, clothes also serve as a protection from harsh weather, insects, microbes and various human activities. Let us look at a cue card which asks us to talk about clothes that you wear on special occasions. responsive poster

IELTS Cue Card # Clothes you like to wear on special occasions

  • What is it
  • On what occasion you wear this
  • Do other people wear the same dress on special occasions
  • Explain why you like to wear this dress.
Sample Answer:

Although I like to dress up casually on a day to day basis, I love to wear a sari for a social event, celebration or festivity. Saree is a female garment for the Indian subcontinent that consists of a drape varying from five to nine yards. It is typically wrapped around the waist, with one end hanging over the shoulder. It is one of the oldest and perhaps the only surviving unstitched garment of the past.
A majority of Indian women wear saree as a traditional dress which has a great cultural significance. Over the years it has not only become sensuous, glamorous all-time-wear for women , but also the canvas for printers and weavers to create artistic weaves, prints and jeweled embellishments. Saree is one of the most graceful dresses as it elegantly covers the entire body by showing natural curves in the most dignified way.
Whenever I wear a saree, I feel delicate and feminine. I particularly like the ones which are made of soft flowing materials as they are easy to drape. On festivals and other formal occasions I love to wear the traditionally woven silk sarees like Kantha, Baluchari and Paithani. These are sarees hand woven in different states of India. Each one of them has ethnic weaves typical of that region.
The best thing about sarees is that they never go out of fashion. What’s more, designers have come up with sarees with modern twist which are even easier to wear and handle. There are semi stitched versions available which can be draped in lesser time than the unstitched ones.

Follow Up Questions

Q1.Do you enjoy buying clothes?
Ans. Till a few years back, I loved shopping for clothes and other stuff with my friends. It was more of a fun day having a bit of shopping, sightseeing and spending quality time with loved ones. However, nowadays I prefer online shopping as it is less time consuming and cheaper than going personally to the shopping malls for purchasing garments. Also, there is a vast variety of clothes one can choose from these shopping websites.
Q2.What kinds of clothes you like to wear?
Ans. On a daily basis, I prefer getting dressed up in casual wear like jeans and T-shirt but for special occasions, I stick to formal wear like a saree or salwar suit. I believe that it’s really important to wear clothes according to the occasion so as to be a part of your social group.
Q3.What factors do you think affect the clothes we choose to wear?
Ans. I personally believe that there are many factors that determine our choice of clothes. Firstly, we purchase clothing according to our liking and comfort level. Then comes, the amount of money we want to spend while selecting our clothes for particular occasions. Lastly, we choose to wear our attire according to weather and geographical location. I would also like to add here that in certain circumstances, religion determines what one wears. For instance, muslim women have to wear hijab or burkha while sikh men wear a headgear called turban.
Q4.Is it possible to look good without spending too much on clothes?
Ans.I feel that it dosen’t necessarily mean that only expensive clothes look good. The way that the wearer carries himself or herself matters the most. Also, if one knows the skill to mix and match different items of clothing that go well together, one can actually generate many new looks without spending much. Adding a few accessories can accentuate the dress which is otherwise simple and inexpensive.

IELTS Cue Card 2017 Questions # Shifting

Gone are the days when people were born in one place and died at the same place. We are in times when people are always on movement, always shifting, changing places, friends and so much more. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about how one feels when moving to a new school or home.

Talk about a time when you moved to a new school.

  • What were the reasons for moving to the new school?
  • explain how did you feel about it
  • do you think it is a good idea to change schools frequently?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Over the period of my school days, I have changed schools three times. Sometimes the shifting was because of my father’s transfer, the other time because of my education. Changing schools has always been a piece of cake for me because I do gel up with people. But one time that I really did not enjoyed changing school was when I came to Dehradun for my higher studies. Usually changing schools meant going along with parents, this time it was all new, making the experience entirely different.

Having changed so many schools, I think they do help in developing the personality of a child. It teaches how to gel up with people and be ready for change. But, then it also takes away the stability that sometimes we need in life. Children who frequently go to new schools are often not able to make lasting friendships which are required later in life.

Phrases

Over the period

Meaning – an amount of time

piece of cake

Meaning – something that is very easy to do

Synonym – child’s play, doddle, snap, nothing, breeze, cinch, gift

lasting friendships

Friendships that stay for a longer period of time
