IELTS CUE CARD # Describe a time when you felt proud of a family member

Sample Answer :

Family acts as an eternal bond in our lives. No matter what, a person’s primary driving force on this earth is the family where he is born and brought up, where he learns love, care, kindness and many such high ended values. We all love and respect each other in our families. But, there are certain accomplishments made by certain people in the family which make you feel proud of them. One such similar incident made me feel proud of my little sister, Apoorva.

It happened when she, after pursuing her degree in mass communication and journalism, was working with a famous news channel as a journalist. She was posted in Mumbai, in 2008.It was then, in September 2008, when Taj tragedy took place and Mumbai was hijacked by terrorists for few hours.

My sister was the one, who covered and broadcasted that mayhem in real time on national news channel. When Mumbai woke up to the first terrorist shot, from that moment onwards, my sister was actively covering all the tension territories one by one. When the terrorists were firing openly in public spaces, she risked her life by being there in a corner, with her third eye covering every evil moment. She portrayed the faces and nefarious acts of those terror perpetrators by her live coverage, which was very helpful for the intelligence surveillance. She left no stone unturned in gathering enough evidence against those terrorists, who were prepared to die, in order to hide their source and identity in interrogation. Later on, these video clippings would become a visual evidence of state sponsored terrorism by our neighbour country. Later on, she was the first broadcaster to reflect upon the malintentions of our neighbour and courage of our commandoes in Mission Taj, killing all the terrorists and rescuing the hostages. She was awarded by the President of India for her valorous patriotic journalism.

Obviously, I felt very happy to see my sister covering the news in real time. For a moment, I felt fearful about my sister, who, despite being a woman, was actively airing the bullets and explosions. But, then I realized how brave act my sister was displaying and I felt like saluting her out the pride she evoked in our family.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
Mayhem chaos: War always bring mayhem for the people
Valorous brave: Valorous efforts by our freedom fighters gave us the freedom
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Why is the family so important in our lives?

Sample answer: I think family is one of the foundation pillars of our society. It is the most intimate group of people who love, care and share each other’s feelings and emotions. The intimate connect between all the members help passing through the rough phases of our lives. Family members always stand by you, no matter what. Our joy and happiness enhances; and pain and sorrow diminishes, in presence of the family members.

Q. 2 Do you think joint families are losing steam nowadays?

Sample answer: Rapid urbanization, leading to mass commercialization; and expansion of occupational ecosystem with expanding infrastructure along with the shrinking agricultural land, has initiated the migration of workers and professionals on a massive scale. It is difficult to survive on the resources available at home and in hometown. Therefore, with this increase in workforce scattered all around, disintegration of joint families set into being and paved way for nuclear families.

Q. 3 When do we feel proud of someone?

Sample answer: When one accomplishes a task which is truly exceptional, requiring tremendous efforts and intellect; then that action is appreciated and commended by the masses. When an action is performed for enshrining the high values and endorsing the true virtues, then that actions attracts honour and we feel proud of the performer. For instance, brave soldiers sacrificing their lives for the country, are honourable figures and we all feel proud of them.

Q. 4 How can we motivate children for higher deeds?

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Good Service

Who does not loves restaurant? Well, I would agree that nothing can compare to the food we eat at home and going to restaurants regularly is not only difficult in our pockets but also not the best choice for our health. But, occasionally, going to those fancy restaurants and eating the fancy food, getting served, it is all so beautiful. But, what if, what if you are not served well. Imagine going to a restaurant and waiting for long minutes before you get water and then hours before you get your order. Or for that matter, getting stale food or cold food! The worst of all are the managers who do not try to rectify their mistakes or the service people who behave rudely. This time in our cue card we are talking about the time when instead of bad, you received a really good service.

Describe a time when you received a good service. You should say –

  • What was the service?
  • When and where did you receive the service?
  • Whom were you together with?

also, explain why did you like it?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Buying clothes for me has been the toughest thing to do. Not because it is something that bores me but growing up in an environment where I got them from others, I never knew how to buy clothes for myself. The first time I came to a new place for my job, I had to buy clothes and that to all alone. That was a terrible thing to do and when I went to the shopping mall, I felt irritation. The people around came asking if there is something they can help me with, giving me options and I would just go and check them.

I scrolled through the entire mall for about 2 hours checking clothes there and finally picking a set of clothes. Only to realize after a few minutes, that I wanted something else. The cashier there was very kind to me. He asked me to buy those clothes and get them changed the next day if I wished to. And I did exactly the same. The next day I went to the shop asking for a change.

This time, the cashier and his team helped me find the right clothes for me. They were very patient and understood that it is indeed the first time I am buying clothes and it is freaking me out. After hours of trying, I came back finally to the first set of clothes that I bought for myself and fell in love with the shop. The people there were more patient with me than most others. They waited patiently even giving me suggestions on what looks good to me and what does not. While leaving one of them said, “It probably was your first time and therefore was tough. But, keep doing things that you find scary or have never done before.”

That advice has been with me for a life.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The only thing that makes me visit a place again is the service of it and that is true for almost everyone. A few weeks ago along with my mother, I visited a local market in Pipli, a place near Bhubaneswar. The town is one of the most celebrated places in Orissa as people there sell handmade products. Most houses there have shops inside of their homes and earn a livelihood from selling their items.

We reached the place at around 5 and after roaming about and buying different things landed ourselves into a very small shop. But, what looked like to us like just a small shop turned out to the best experience we had in Pipli. The man had a house from where he sold his products. He asked us to move with him and on doing so, we found their entire family telling us all about their articles.

The entire process of buying was no longer about what looked best, but what actually was best. They all told us about how they made it, the colors they used and what time it took. The history of handmade products in Orissa and how it is exported to the entire country. The ways in which they make their lives and the difficulties.

I loved shopping at Pipli because when buying it was not about what I was buying but more about why I was doing it.

IELTS cue card A TV documentary you watched

Sample Answer

I recently watched an amazing documentary that left a lasting impression on my mind. It’s called Kurt Cobain – Montage of Heck.
It is based on the real life story of the legendary musician and the lead guitarist of the band, Nirvana. The documentary is well-versed and depicts various aspects of his life. It describes his struggle against depression and drug addiction. It is heartbreaking to see his downfall which eventually led to his death at the age of 27. The documentary was released 2 decades after his suicide.
Kurt Cobain is one of my favorite musicians. I came across the documentary while reading an article that was published about him. The reviews were quite applauding and thoughtful. The critics praised the movie to their heart’s content. I was really impressed. So, I decided to watch it.
The documentary is an inspiration for the entire young generation today. It depicts the journey of a young talented musician who becomes addicted to drugs and eventually ends his life. The movie shows the struggle of an individual suffering from mental illness and his fight to overcome the trauma. Apart from this several personal audio recording and juvenilia are also added in the movie.
The documentary doesn’t only describe the man as a rock and roll saga and typical doomed artist but also gives an insight into his artistic expressions and his infamous relationship with his wife, Courtney Love. It taught me that the choice to be successful or unsuccessful lies only and only in my hands and as an individual one has to learn to differentiate as to what is preferable or not preferable for them as they grow up. Overall, it was an overwhelming documentary. I will surely recommend it to everyone.

IELTS Cue Card #Speak about a difficult thing you did

IELTS Cue Card #Speak about a difficult thing you did

Speak about a difficult thing you did.
You should say:

  • What was that activity?
  • When and where did you do it?
  • How did you do it?

And how do you feel after it.

IELTS CUE CARD # Speak about a difficult thing you did

Sample Answer :

We often come across few difficult tasks in our day to day lives. Tasks which are practiced less often, turn into difficult tasks. When we are performing a task for the first time, at that time, difficulty level is more. As we practice more and become proficient, difficulty level decreases and task is performed better in lesser time. Anyways, we almost always remember the struggle we underwent in those difficult times. I, too, remember my efforts in debugging a software programme, that was infected very severely and damaging our whole server data.

Basically, I am a software engineer and work in an MNC based in Dehradun. We have been offering the software solutions to our clients for the last 20 years, which are spread all over the globe. I am a programmer at core but also deals in security system and protection. I just have an average fair knowledge about malwares and debugging, and from no angle, I am an expert. Few months back, our chief engineer for software security was on a long leave. His team used to handle the security issues well, even in his absence but one day, all the systems suddenly shut down like a blackout except the master computer networked directly to the server.

We acknowledged that it was a virus attack injected intentionally in our cloud space. Our existing programmes were inadequate to counter this superiorly coded malware sent in our network. This could have led to the stealing of private classified data, if handled erroneously. I had dealt with debugging programmes earlier also, but here, I needed to include one extra loop in my programme to run it successfully. I scratched my grey cells for 10 hrs at a stretch to run the new programme. After a series of successive futile efforts, I finally managed to crack the code and debug the software. Our whole team shouted with a hurray and lifted me on their shoulders.

I was a kind of, on the spot hero for my colleagues. I am a serious freak in anything that I do. This was a big leap in my programming skills and I invented that in an exigency. That forged the tons of confidence inside me, being fit to perform under pressure. My boss promoted me the next day and I felt very elated.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
Erroneously inaccurately: Present approach taken by world leaders to combat climate change seems to be erroneous as there are no substantial results over so many years
Exigency emergency: One should remember the exigency numbers provided by state administration
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do you like to take up difficult tasks? Why?

Sample answer: Yes, quite often I volunteer for the difficult tasks. Since my childhood days, I used to believe in doing the tasks, which were not being done earlier or very difficult to perform. I think, this appetite keeps me high and motivated. Tough tasks appear to me as challenges and the accomplishment of those tasks after my strenuous efforts gave an immense sense of joy and satisfaction.

Q. 2 How can we shed the fear of taking up difficult tasks?

Sample answer: I think, we should not take up the utmost difficult task in the very beginning. We should follow the slow and steady approach in mastering a particular task and only later on, we should venture the toughest aspects of it. Even the small and easy achievements in the beginning, can be rich motivators and brain openers preparing us for the next difficult task.

Q. 3 Do you believe in punishment, as a tool for improvement in the performance?

Sample answer: I may not be able to answer this question absolutely. Because on one hand, I believe that even negative reinforcement or punishment can be instrumental in performance improvement if administered properly and without time delays while on the other hand, I cannot claim punishment to be the only effective option for corrections. I think one should resort to it as the last available option. Positive reinforcements and right encouragement can be highly effective in performing difficult tasks.
