We are in 2017 and surely the world has changed in a decade. Gone are the days when people used to stick to their television screens and eat food. We are in times when the world is watching the internet take over the minds of people. Some people are busy using social networking sites, others are busy googling but even then, television has maintained the number of its viewers. Do you often watch TV?

Television has been an integral part of my life over the years. However, with time, the priorities in my life have changed and I don’t get much time to watch TV. Also, the channels that I watch have changed. But, yes I do watch it but its once in a blue moon.

What sorts of things do you watch on TV?

I like watching travel shows, history channel, and drama on Television. My favorite would be the BBC travel shows mostly the documentaries made by them, the tv show Suits. I also like Indian television. My favorites are Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Girl in the City, Roadies, and others.

What is your favorite TV program?

The one TV program that I have loved for a long time now is Dill Mill Gayye. The show does not air now, but I do watch it on the hot star or you tube. It has been my favorite since I was in class 8th and continues to be one of the best shows I have seen. However, off lately, I have also started liking Suits. I love the way the characters talk and their attitude, well that is amazingly portrayed.

Do you ever watch foreign programs or films?

Yes, I do. I mostly watch English foreign films. The English films that I have watched till date have been mostly romantic comedies or purely romantic. I have seen, P.S. I love you, Walk to remember, Lot like love, no strings attached, what happens in Vegas, letters to Juliet and many more. When it comes to series, I have watched almost all the ones that came on television when I was a kid. That’s so Raven, Lizzie Mcguire, Life of Zack and Cody and much more. I really don’t remember their names, but yes I do like watching foreign films/programs.

What did you watch on TV when you were a child?

I remember watching cartoons as a child. Serials like Ben10, Pokemon, Beyblade were my favorites. Growing up during my teenage years, my interest shifted towards the reality shows, like roadies and splitsville. I loved the romantic comedies and usually watched them.

Do you think children should watch TV?

Definitely yes. I think television has so much more to teach children than any of the other things. However, I believe that it should under the supervision of the parents. Networks like BBC, Discovery Channel, History channel have so much to teach to the children. In some ways, I believe even TV series can teach the lot to children. The one thing that I learned from Sinchan was that you should always be happy about life. So, a child should be allowed to watch TV but under the supervision of a parent.

IELTS Speaking 2017 Questions # May 26

Time for more speaking questions!
Q:Where do you live?
Presently, I am living in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa, a state to the East of our country. I stay at a rented apartment with a friend of mine. Our flat has two rooms along with a kitchen and bathroom. The house is a km away from the place I work at, making it a perfect place to stay.
Q:What do you do: study or work?
I am working in an Indian MNC and it has been more than a year since I have been working for the IT firm. My journey started with technologies like Oracle but now I have started working on Hadoop. We use these technologies to do Data Analytics.
Q:Why did you take this job?
There is no specific reason on why I took the job.  Probably, it felt right at that moment, even more, I was busy establishing myself as a writer and so I did not bother much about the company. I joined it because I needed money and exposure of how things are done in corporate life.
Q:Give some reasons for choosing this industry?
There is no better place to learn that IT industry. We are living in a world where everything is being digitalized and moving towards technology if someone knows computers it really does help. Working with and IT firm surely gives the added advantage of knowing how things are done apart from the coding. Meeting deadlines, learning code and creating new things surely help in improving creativity.
Q:Do you think advertisements help people?
Advertisements surely have a major impact on individuals and society in large. There have been many informative advertisements coming up recently and they do help people understand things in a different light. For example, there is an Indian ad, where a son has a ringtone of a whistle and his mother comes up to him and asks to change it. The son retaliates and she says, the whistle reminds me of the whistleblowers I encounter every day when going to the office. The message was clear: teach your sons to respect women and only a mother can do that. There is so much that art and artist teach society in large.
Q:Do you like ads when you are browsing?
Well, I am an ad lover so if for the most part I really do enjoy watching advertisements. It really does not bother me much if they come up in between my browsing. I have always been fascinated by advertisements. The fact that in just 30 seconds, they are able to put forth their idea and make you think about it for hours, is pretty amazing.
Q:Do you think ads on walls is a good idea to market?
Pretty much yes, not only they make walls more interesting they also do convey a message. For example, if the walls of the street are advertising about women safety, probably it will surely have an impact on the society in large. If the walls of the street, advertise about the culture of the country people will know more about it even without much trying. So, surely yes, ads on walls are a good way to market, probably we should know exactly what we would like to market about. A wall with all slangs is something one can avoid, but a wall with good sayings is something we can go for.

IELTS Speaking 2017 Questions # May 27

Questions asked in the speaking section change faster than probably seasons. The questions asked in 2016 are probably not the questions that will be asked in 2017. This time we bring to you some of the speaking questions that have been asked in the speaking section on May 25.

Q: Do you live in a house or a flat?

I live in a house facing north with two other families living in the first and second floor respectively. My rooms are on the ground floor along with the land lord’s room. The part of our house has two rooms along with a kitchen and an attached bathroom. It has been three months since we started living in here. Before this, we were living in shared accommodation. I like my study room because it’s small and there is less management required. I can very easily locate my books and study.

Q: What kind of house would you like to live in the future?

The view is the most important thing for me. When it comes to my house, I would like to live in a house with a lot of windows which allows enjoying the view outside. Outside of my apartment, it would be lovely if we have a beach or a view of the mountain. Probably, it would be so much better to be surrounded by nature all around us. I wish for a big house but the one that is expanded horizontally. It will be nice to have a few gardens at my house with a lot of plants and trees. I am sure such a facility might not be available in the middle of the city, but it would be nice if the house is not too far from the main city.

Q: What kind of jewelry you have?

I don’t own many golds or diamond jewelry. Probably, I don’t like putting on much of them. But I do love accessorizing my clothes with artificial jewelry. I have a dozen earrings. All that I have collected over a period of time. I do even own some hand wrist but not much of them either.

Q: Have you ever bought jewelry for someone else?

My mother is very fond of gold jewelry. She always had a desire for buying long earrings. However, because of certain reasons she never got a chance of buying them. It was during my college years and I got a stint at a writing company. Working for this company, was an amazing experience for me altogether. It was the first time that I got a salary and I recollect my mother shopping earring for my aunt. She wanted to gift an earring for her on her anniversary. So, buying we both got confused on two earrings. My mother loved both and so I gifted her the one she loved more. I could truly see a feeling of pride in her eyes and more importantly happiness. That gift surely made my day.

books IELTS Band7

Sample Answer:

I prefer reading in my leisure time. Today, I would like to speak about a book hat was recommended to me. I found it quite insightful and would love to read it again, whenver time allows me to do so.

The name of the book is Onward. It is written by Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, America’s leading coffee company and coffee house chain. This book falls under the genre of Business and Leadership.

In the Year 2010, I was working for Cocoberry, India’s first frozen yogurt brand. That’s when I came across the book as my company’s CEO gifted it to all employees and suggested us to read it. In this book, Howard shares the remarkable story of his return and the company’s ongoing transformation under his leadership. He reveals how during one of the most tumultuous economic times in history, Starbucks again achieved profitability and sustainability.

It’s been 2 years since I read this book. I’d like to go through it again. The main reason behind this is the beautiful manner in which the book is written. It keeps you motivated and tells you how not to lose hope in tough times. It includes information about the time when Howard comes to terms with his limitations and how he evolves his leadership style during that time. It represents his central leadership philosophy: It’s not just about winning, but the right way to win. It gives the readers a sense of hope that no matter how tough times get, the future can be just as or more successful than the past.

Q.

How does the literature help you understand the culture of a particular place?
Ans: Books have been the source of knowledge from the ancient times and they have acted as a medium of passing information. They have known to be an authentic source of information be it related to culture, science, medicine, history etc. culture has known to evolve overtime, being passed on generation to generation. And the best way to understand about the culture of a new place is to read about it through the books.

Talking or listening to someone might help you to an extent in understanding about the culture, but that will be a version of his or her understanding or of someone who he/she might have heard from. Thus, the authenticity could never be really gauged and relied upon. Ergo, the need of writing literature, in the ancient times. It was the prime responsibility of the historians to write the literature in such a manner that it could be referred to and easily understood by the masses as and when required, by the common masses and by those who were yet to come.

Q.

Why is it important for parents and adults to read books to their children?
Answer: A child’s mind is a clean slate, and it is up to the parents and adults what to fill it up with. Books are the vast source of knowledge and educating your kids with them is the best way to nourish their mind and help it grow. Reading books to your kids helps in enhancing their knowledge, creativity/ imagination, listening skill as well it helps in bonding the family as a whole.
