SAMPLE ANSWER

Schools have always been the institution of teaching discipline and hard work and mine was the epitome of it. I studied in a convent school and there were many rules which we had to adhere to. But, after a change in our principal, a new rule was established which stated that any student who is late for school would not be allowed to attend the first three classes. On looking back at the rule, I can understand the reason for its severity. Students would have surely and they did avoided being late.

However, during that time, when the rule was beginning to apply, there was a lot of hustle and bustle in the school. Many students of the primary classes on getting late had to stand outside and wait for the first three lectures to complete. There were even cases when the children who got late were bullied and I can clearly remember one case. A child of fourth grade was late and when he reached the class, he was teased by his peers for a week. It led to his health deteriorating and his parents had to complain.

On the other side, many formed friendships with their late comers and so they came purposely late.

The intentions of the rule, in my opinion, were good but could have been implemented other wise. Students getting late could have been recorded and actions taken on them for being late for three consecutive days. In this way, we could have avoided the bullying and the extreme laziness which the rule brought along.

Another Similar Cue Card

Speak about a rule that you don’t like.

  • What is/was that rule?
  • When and Where do/did you follow it?
  • Why don’t/didn’t you like this rule?

And do/did other people like the rule? Why?

SAMPLE ANSWER Two-

Rules are the formal manners of the Norms and Mores, which are prevalent in every culture and society, all over the globe. They are considered to be essential in maintaining order and stability in a society, for bringing the suitable organization within behaviour of the people. Rules generally attract punishments in case of their violation, therefore they have this inherent nature of compliance for the people. I used to study in a boarding school and boarding school is usually stuffed with the rules to impose right discipline in students. Although we had a strict schedule for everyday, which we had to adhere to, but there was this, one fundamental rule for our sports, which I used to detest a lot. It was to follow and play only a one particular game throughout your schooling.

Well, every new entrant in our school had to choose one particular game out of the many. Thereafter, he needed to build his skills and proficiencies in that game only, playing every day for 3 hours at least. I chose hockey when I joined and I started enjoying it too. But sometimes, after hearing about the popular shots or kicks in cricket or football, or sometimes, due to the feel of jumping in the swimming pool in scorching heat of summers; I thought of changing my game. But, it was a rule to stick to just one game. And, even if you spot out your reasonable reasons in front of the coaches, it used to be such a tedious process of applications, and finally, after that only a few used to have that privilege of changing the game and those too, with another stricter unmodifiable rule of never being allowed to change the game twice. So, many students used to drop the idea of changing the game, even for the first time.

Yes, there were a few chaps who used to stick to one game with interest. Actually, like every rule, this rule had the benefits of properly honing your skills at one proficiency; and it was reasonable too, that by playing one game for your schooling years, one becomes a player who can bring laurels for the school in sports championships. And later too, that sports talent can reap great benefits in one’s career. Therefore, many students used to like the imposingness posed by that specific rule.

Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do you like rules, in general? State the reason too.

Sample answer: Well, I may not like all the rules out there but I know that they are there for the good only. For instance, I like riding a bike without helmet with winds soaring through my head, but the rule instructs us to always wear a helmet while driving. Now, this rule, even if I don’t like it, is for my good only.

Q. 2 Do you consider that some existing rules are irrational? Why?

Sample answer: Yes, I do consider that some rules are totally illogical and irrational. For instance, on the same example we discussed in the last answer, about helmets. Sikhs in our country are allowed to drive without helmet. That is understandable, considering the massive size of their turbans. But imagine, just out of charity, this privilege was extended to their women too, as it looks odd that husband is driving without helmet while wife is sitting along with a helmet over her head. For the sake of this odd look, we gave this relaxation to Sikh women, compromising on our safety and security. Similarly, there are other such instances too, which can be easily observed in our day to day lives.

Q. 3 Do you think the necessity of rules for children too?

Sample answer: See, we need to look at it from a different perspective in case of children. I think they need to be taught about rules by their parents and teachers as well. Children are full of innocence, imposition of rules on them will come with a heavy burden. Rather, they should be taught about the fundamentals of civic life and the requirements of discipline and rules in it. One should walk on the left of the road, is one such thing ,which we can teach to a child and which later on becomes a traffic rule for him, when he grows adult.

Sample Answer

I have been a studious child during my entire schooling. My interest in all the subjects was equal and I was a consistent performer as well. There was this one subject however, that always piqued my interest due to various reasons. The subject that I like the most is biotechnology. It was an elective subject that I chose in the eleventh and studied until twelfth grade.

I remember Mrs. Jaya teaching us biotechnology during both those years in high school. We were lucky to have her as our teacher as she was a great teacher and had a great way of teaching. She was a very lenient and jolly person who took our classes in a fun and interactive manner. I was fond of biology and biotechnology caught my fantasy and I really wanted to learn all that the subject had to offer.

She used to tell us fascinating stories and then relate them to the theory. Her discussions were highly detailed and explanatory, sometimes eliminating the need of referring to a textbook. She gave us ample amount of time to take notes while she drew extended diagrams to help us visualize the theory in a better manner. We could see her sitting in the staffroom, creating notes and collecting material in order to facilitate our learning. The way she gave individual attention to all the students, urged us to put more effort into our studies. I learned a lot about the human body, its working principles, and the biological cell structure at length, in a short amount of time.

I was able to grasp all the course material and excelled at all my tests. This is why I found biotechnology to be my favorite subject.

IELTS Cue Card #Describe someone you really like to spend time with

Sample Answer :

Most of the time, I am surrounded by my mates at college. Later, I devote few hours on my studies. In the evenings, I usually go to gym for my cardiovascular exercises, after which I take dinner and go for sleep. Although on Sundays, I bring a rift in routine, when I go to meet my girlfriend Tina. She is my classmate at college. We are together since our childhood. We stay in the same locality, were together in the same school and later in the same college too.

Tina is a sweet beautiful girl. I like watching her innocent acts and naïve gestures. Her beautiful expressions make me feel out of this world. She is very candid and honest, along with her ambitious stance in life. She wants to pursue her medical studies and become a doctor. She is the only person apart from my mother, who spots out my weaknesses and limitations, without any hesitation. In the beginning, I was irate, but later, that became my correction, my support and my motivation. Moreover, she is brighter than me in studies. So, she helps me a lot of times in clearing up my doubts in subjects. Apart from that, we usually stay humorously in each other’s company.

Obviously, we both like to be with each other as much as possible. In college, we don’t have the pleasure of being together most of the time but on Sundays, she would call me for a movie or lunch together. She generally dresses up in nice formal outfits and insists me wearing the formal too. She talks a lot about me and our togetherness. Whenever we are about to take leave in the afternoon, she would strive for some more time to be spent with me.

She is indeed very close to my heart. I used to adore her since my school days and now I experience this intense connect with her, which is so special to me. I feel overwhelmed by beauty and joy, when I am with her and therefore, I want to spend more and more time with her.

Follow-up Questions

Sample answer: Yes, there are different types of people all around us. In the company of a select few, we really feel comfortable and good. Most of the times, these are the people who either care for us or are like minded to us. We spend creative time in their company. While on the other hand, there are people with bad intentions and malicious acts. They will be staining us with the same negativity and propagate the harmful consequences for us.

Q. 3 Do the children like to spend time with their parents?

Sample answer: Although this is a subjective question, varying child to child and parent to parent, but in general, I can say that, till the child is in teenage, there is a kind of emotional as well as material dependency of a child on his parents. Out of this and otherwise too, children spend enough time with their parents till that age. But, as they grow older to turn adolescents, they form their own groups and associations with their peers. Then, they spend very little time with their parents because they start finding the company of new friends more interesting.

Q. 4 Do older people long for the company of younger ones?

Sample answer: Yes, they do. My grandfather once told me this that he longed to spend time in the company of youngsters. This kind of experience doesn’t press them with the old age. They feel jovial and amused sharing jokes and experiences with young people.

IELTS Cue Card #Describe a house or apartment that you would like to live in

IELTS Cue Card #Describe a house or apartment that you would like to live in

Describe a house or apartment that you would like to live in.
You should say:

  • Where do you want it?
  • What kind of house is it exactly?
  • Why do like such a house?

And how will you feel staying in that house?

IELTS Cue Card #Describe a house or apartment that you would like to live in

Sample Answer :

Having a house for oneself and one’s family is a dream project for so many of the middle class people. While going for a house, one examines every fine detail associated with it, be it the design outlay and the material used or the scenic location and the amenities in the neighbourhood. Nowadays, concept of housing societies, where one can have an apartment is also thriving well. I have a personal preference for a spacious house instead of an apartment, mainly because of the openness which is lacking in an apartment. Foothill valleys, which lie in the fertile plains sprawling in the laps of majestic mountains, is an ideal choice for me to locate a house for myself.

As I am very averse to modern technology and associated gadgets, therefore I shall make it a point to keep the house as native to the nature as possible. Proper ventilation and spacious design is one thing; I shall focus on its interiors. Space is another thing; I would wish to have enough, for the house. I would like to develop the built up area only as much, as needed by the members essentially. Open space would be utilized for a small orchid, where I would like to plant my favourite fruits and seasonal vegetables. This would, in turn attract several birds to the house. I also wish to maintain an area for the livestock too. These provisions are a luxury in present times, where one doesn’t get healthy natural food in spaceless over congested metro cities.

A house in the laps of the nature with good food, water and naturally ventilated ambience, is the one that is most appropriate from the health point of view. Noiseless, crowdless surroundings with very little traffic and absence of industries is such a blessing to live in. Therefore, on account of all the mentioned propositions, I would like to stay in this house.

Needless to say, this kind of house would just be a bliss for me. Although, I know that practically speaking, such kind of location will be ill afforded in my young days as I shall be running in this rat race, crazily entering the cities with commerce and huzzbuzz so that I can earn my livelihood. I should therefore, keep this ideal house as a reserve for my old age.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
Averse strong disliking:  Saints are averse to worldly inducements.
Imminent sure to come: As per weather forecasts, heavy rain on Monday is imminent.
Obsolete out of date: Ancient architecture, although so old, still represents the rich antiquity rather than obsoleteness.
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 What is your present house like?

Sample answer: My present home was built by my father. It was built many years ago therefore, it needs proper renovation and facelift in different senses. Also, it is not as spacious so as to accommodate an orchid and livestock. Wood and floor work has also turned obsolete now. Also, very less space has been allotted to kitchen and washrooms.

Q. 2 What are the noticeable changes in the houses built nowadays as compared to those in the past?

Sample answer: With the bulge in the working and overall population, space has become a crucial factor to be considered nowadays. Trend of apartments and flats is on the rise. These are the offshoots of non-customized mass housing patterns designed and built by builders. Quality of building material used is much inferior with a stress on the exterior outlook only. Modular kitchens, fancy equipment and circuitry to accommodate modern electronic gadgets is the recent trend. Factor of durability and open spaces with natural ventilation is not a concern these days.

Q. 3 Why do you think small spaced apartments’ demand is on rise?

Sample answer: Well, the overall changes in the social structure pave the way for other accommodative changes thereafter. With the expanding occupational scenario, disintegration of joint families set into process. With the rise of working husband and wife at a place distant from their homeland, nuclear families grew in number, which could be easily fitted into low space apartments, and therefore their rise is imminent.

Q. 4 Do you like the idea of eco-friendly homes?

Sample answer: Eco friendly homes is a very novel concept and is still in its infancy stage. Use of nature friendly materials, less polluting construction techniques and maximising the use of green energy in home applications are some of the remarkable advantages of this concept. Moreover, waste disposal and sewerage system of a home are accordingly designed so as to minimize the waste and maximize the recycling. Home, as a very prominent unit of the overall city, can thus be an active contributor in turning the city into smart city.
