Describe a speech that you heard recently. You should say:

  • who gave the speech
  • what the speech was about
  • whether it impressed you or not

and explain why did you like or dislike the speech.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I do love listening to speeches and have heard a lot of Ted Talks and speeches by great men of our times. Today I am going to talk about a speech that I recently heard on youtube. The speech was given by Mohammad Qahtani in 2015 at the world Championship of Public Speaking. The speech was titled “The Power of Words” and he started the speech with a clear message that he was going to carry home. He said,” Sugar is more dangerous than tobacco can ever be because there are so many people dying of diabetes”. For a second I did believe it and then he brings the idea home that words are indeed powerful.

Qahtani then carried forward with examples of how is friend died because his father refused to accept his accolades. Not only did the content fascinated me but the way he spoke it out was truly mesmerizing and impactful. The expressions and the voice modulation, it seemed as if he was telling a story and making people understand that words can make difference in the lives of people.

I really liked the speech for its content, the vividness with which he explained every incident and the purity that the message and the speaker had. It all seemed real and the power the message had moved me.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I have recently joined the Toastmasters community and it is all about public speaking and leadership. Last Friday, I attended a meeting held in my office. It was a district level conference and people from all of the communities in the district came to attend it. Like in all meetings, there were two main speakers and lot of table topics. But the one thing that made the meeting different from others was the quality of the speakers.

There were two main speakers. The first speaker explained how in the latest of times we have philosophized life to an extent that we have stopped living. It was a humorous speech and in the end the message was clear, life is about doing what you love and letting everything else pass by. The second speaker talked about dreams. How dreams have been the driving force for so many eras and the beautiful concept of understanding the present circumstances through dreams.

I really loved the speakers and the way they presented their thoughts. There was drama in the speech and one could visualize the words of the speakers making it impactful.

CUE CARD – Describe a successful business you know.

Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a successful business you know .

You should say:

  • Who this person is?
  • How you knew him/her?
  • What business this person does?
Sample Answer

Without a doubt, managing a business is a demanding endeavour . The upcoming ups and downs require patience and preparation. A very small percentage of people pursue careers in business. Zoravar , one of my friends, is a successful businessman. He was the one who would always think outside the box in our group. He, however, had always desired to launch his own company, even if the rest of us were training for government employment in order to have a stable future. He was full of business ideas, none of which we would consider plausible. But he never wavered in his self-belief or his resolve to manage a profitable company. Last year I met him after a long time at a friend’s wedding, he acted just like he always did. Zoravar also made appearances on well-known podcasts. He currently owns multiple companies. My favourite project of his is his well-known clothing line. Both the pricing and the quality are really excellent.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions)

Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3)related to cue card ‘DESCRIBE A SUCCESSFUL BUISNESS YOU KNOW.’

To be honest, I have no interest in setting up a business but to answer the question I would start my own clothing brand since I love dressing up and try new outfits.

Q2. Do you agree or disagree that most young people want to be famous today?
Undoubtedly, significant number of individuals are drawn to the idea of getting prominent because of the lavish lifestyle, recognition and glamour associated with it.

Q3. What kind of people are most famous in your country today?

In my nation, those in the political and cultural spheres—such as dance, music, and theatre—are well-known. Talented people now have a large platform to become well-known thanks to social media. In fact, many have become instantly well-known overnight.

Word Meaning Example

Prominent Famous Shahrukh Khan is one of the prominent actors of the world.

IELTS Cue Card 2017 Questions # Shifting

Gone are the days when people were born in one place and died at the same place. We are in times when people are always on movement, always shifting, changing places, friends and so much more. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about how one feels when moving to a new school or home.

Talk about a time when you moved to a new school.

  • What were the reasons for moving to the new school?
  • explain how did you feel about it
  • do you think it is a good idea to change schools frequently?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Over the period of my school days, I have changed schools three times. Sometimes the shifting was because of my father’s transfer, the other time because of my education. Changing schools has always been a piece of cake for me because I do gel up with people. But one time that I really did not enjoyed changing school was when I came to Dehradun for my higher studies. Usually changing schools meant going along with parents, this time it was all new, making the experience entirely different.

Having changed so many schools, I think they do help in developing the personality of a child. It teaches how to gel up with people and be ready for change. But, then it also takes away the stability that sometimes we need in life. Children who frequently go to new schools are often not able to make lasting friendships which are required later in life.

Phrases

Over the period

Meaning – an amount of time

piece of cake

Meaning – something that is very easy to do

Synonym – child’s play, doddle, snap, nothing, breeze, cinch, gift

lasting friendships

Friendships that stay for a longer period of time
