IELTS Cue Card # You know who is a good cook

IELTS Cue Card # You know who is a good cook

Describe someone you know who is a good cook.
You should say:
•  Who this person is?
•  How you know him or her?
•  What kinds of foods she/he cooks?
and explain why this person is good at cooking.

Sample Answer :

To be honest, I’m a terrible cook. But I love eating and food acts as a major need and mood buster to me. I’m going to talk about my mom who is an amazing chef.

I have never enjoyed any meal in the world in a similar way that I enjoy the dishes made by my mother. She is a legendary cook and she has a huge popularity in the family for making delicious cuisines. She is also a pro in managing the kitchen and the kind of food she makes is amazing and worth trying. I always wonder that she secretly takes training for the same but in reality she actually learnt cooking after she got married and was in charge for cooking for the entire family. She is a chemical engineer by profession and she always had a knack for learning new and challenging things. My mother was born and raised in a suburban area and got married when she was 23 years old. She has effectively managed to maintain both her career and the household responsibilities in a prideful manner. Often family members and friends appreciate her cooking and I feel super proud of her.

She cooks effortlessly and I often wonder how does she manage to do it so swiftly. I’d rather say that it’s an artistic performance on display. In times of emergency or when we are visited by uninvited guests ,I have been astonished to find her cooking food in no time for the guests.

She loves cooking for the family and she regularly makes bread, rice, meats, fish, burgers, sweet-meats, curry etc. For the festivals she makes sweets, cakes, snacks, local and foreign cuisines. Apart from making Indian dishes she is well versed with knowledge to make various cuisines like Chinese, Thai, Italian and Mexican foods. Its always a fascination as to how she has learned those long and vivid menus as she has never travelled to those countries nor has taken any training in making any particular cuisine. She is the best chef that I know of.

Follow-up Questions:

Q1• What are the prospects of building a career as a cook in your country?
Ans India looks upon cooking as a very inferior job but with modernisation and the impact of several cooking shows inspired from foreign countries  cooking is gaining prestige and I think with time it will come out as a worthy profession in due time.

Q2• What special dishes you want to taste? Why?
Ans I wish to taste the local pizza’s and several Mexican cuisines as I really wonder what the actual taste would be like. As a foreign cuisine what we get to eat in India is but a version of the same which is fitted and modified to fit the taste buds of the locals.

Q3• What traditional food you would like your foreigner friends to try?
Ans I’d like my foreign friends to try out Dal-Batti, Churma and Dosa as they have an amazing taste and also come under the list of my own favourites. I feel Indians have a variety of cuisines and everything is worth a shot.

Over the years I have garnered a long wish list consisting of a variety of enticing objects that have captured my attention. Ranging from collectible items and books to cars and motorcycles. It is a quite common phenomenon and I am sure to be ecstatic whenever I acquire any of these things.

There was this one time when I came to know about a new watch on the market. The watch had a lot of modern and rare features such as a barometer, a compass, and an altimeter. Made of tough materials, it also offered solar charging along with world time facility as well. I wanted it because I like going on trekking trips and taking walks in forest areas, and the features in this watch would help me a lot during such expeditions. Consequently, I looked around for it and I knew that I wanted it as soon as I set my eyes on it. So much so, that I printed out a picture and pasted it on my bedroom wall and in the meanwhile also started saving for it. One day my mother told me that my uncle was coming over to visit us in the upcoming month. I was ecstatic as he always came bearing gifts and adored me a lot. The time came and my uncle arrived at our home. He unpacked his bag and called me over, handing me a package.

Surely, I was surprised and tore it up to look inside. There it was, the watch of my dreams, packed neatly in the brand packaging. I really was very delighted upon receiving this watch as I like wearing watches and did not have one back then. I was very happy and I hugged my uncle while thanking him profusely.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Intellectual

An intellectual is a person who engages in critical thinking, research, and reflection about society and proposes solutions for its normative problems. Over a period of time, we meet people who are masters of their own fields or for that matter are all-rounders. These are often the same people who push the human race, the ones who come in our lives and teach us some valuable lessons. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about a person you have encountered in your life who is the master of his or her field.

Describe someone who knows a lot about something. You should say :

  • who is the person?
  • how do you know him or her?
  • what did you learn from him/ her?

Also, explain why do you admire the person.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Over a period of few years, I have worked for various companies and in different fields. This has led me to know a multitude of people with varied interest. One such personality I chanced upon to meet was Abhinav. I met him during my stint at a Multinational company where we met over the group called Toastmasters. I had gone to attend a meeting of the club and heard him give an impromptu speech.

The speech motivated me to an extent that I joined the club. Over a period of time, he became my mentor in the journey of Public speaking. We came to know more about each other. It was through those talks that a realization dawned on me that not only was he an excellent speaker but also a really wise man. He had been through a lot in his life and yet chose always to be happy.

Over his journey, he told me about different things about public speaking. The quirks of writing complicated things in a shorter way, of giving a message and ensuring that people always have something to look forward to. He taught me the importance of words. How the same words can have an impact or be of no use.

The reason I really admire Abhinav is that he is one person who fought back his fears and won his battles. Coming from Hindi background he aced speaking in English and taught me the art of speaking well. He is the one person who in many ways taught that the best way of living life is to enjoy it, with all its problems and happiness.

Vocabulary :

multitude – a large number of people or things.

impromptu – done without being planned or rehearsed.

mentor – an experienced and trusted adviser.

quirks – a particular aspect of a person’s character or behavior.
