Electronic waste has become a serious problem # IELTS Essay

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Task: Electronic waste has become a serious problem.
Why is it a problem and how it can be solved?
Write at least 250 words.

ANSWER:
E-Waste is the term used to describe old, end-of-life or discarded products. It consists of all waste from electronic and electrical appliances which have reached their end-of-life period or are no longer fit for their original intended use and are destined for recovery, recycling or disposal. Recent years have witnessed a drastic increase in the amount of e-waste. This has become a pressing problem for many countries. In this essay I will look at why e-waste is dangerous and propose some solutions to tackle this challenge.
E-Waste contains both valuable as well as hazardous materials which require special handling and recycling methods. It contains ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastic, glass, wood and plywood, printed circuit boards, concrete, ceramics, rubber and another items. Iron and steel constitute about 50% of the waste, followed by plastic (21%), non-ferrous metal (13%) and other constituents.
Due to rapid advances in technology electronic appliances become obsolete quickly. This coupled with explosive sales in consumer electronics, means that more products are being disposed of, even if they still work. As an example, In the USA, about 400 million units per year of consumer electronics are scrapped, according to recycling industry experts. Recycling e-waste is not like recycling cardboard. These products are not easy to recycle and they are not designed for recycling.
The matter of the fact is that discarded electronics are managed badly and most e-waste still goes in the landfill in spite of hazardous, sometimes radioactive, materials like lead, plastic, chromium, mercury, beryllium, cadmium and acids. Moreover, all around the world, the quantity of electrical and electronic waste generated each year has assumed alarming proportions. Thus, e-waste has become a threat to the environment.
However, there are ways to deal with this rising issue. Effective e-waste management skills and techniques should be developed and implemented. Producers can contribute their share of work by taking the responsibility of e-waste management. They should reuse the parts as it would be more than appropriate since it is already their field and it would be a profitable business for them. Making consumers more aware of the ill-effects of improper handling and disposal would also be beneficial. In fact, some companies are already getting a head start by placing especially dedicated e-bins.
To sum up, e-waste management has become the need of the hour. I believe that governments and manufacturing companies should give a priority to this issue.

Obesity has become a major issue in countries world wide. This has led to the increase in serious health problems among people. Although there is no one reason for the dramatic change, several factors have played their role.

One of the chief causes is diet. People these days eat more and more  high-carbohydrate, high-fat burgers and pizza in fast-food restaurants. These instead of being good for health in turn are responsible for deteriorating it. A possible solution to this could be awareness, among both people and the sellers. Steps need to be taken to tell people about the effects of excessive eating of fast food. Even more, the sellers must be given workshops to improve the quality of the food.

The second major reason for obesity is lifestyle. People now work harder and and have sedentary jobs. Moreover, they don’t exercise regularly. IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Increased Flights

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

With the increasing number of people travelling, there is a growing demand for more flights.

What problems does this have on environment?

What can be done to solve the problem?

Write at least 250 words.

With the coming of internet and globalization, the world has become a global village and people are now readily expanding their horizons. This often means that more and more people are choosing to travel overseas and find out about the various cultures. This new trend of travelling has in turn increased the number of flights, which has had effect on the environment.

The biggest issue with the rise in number of flights is the increase in the carbon emission. The high altitude jet emissions tend to produce an additional warming effect and the explosive growth in air travel makes it one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon gases in the atmosphere. One solution would be to increase the use of road transport where lower carbon alternatives already exists.

Another problem caused is the increasing danger to the birds flying at the same altitude. Increased number of flights tend to increase the air traffic which is not very favorable for the birds that often migrate or fly at that region. For instance, often it so happens that due to less visibility the bird gets hit by the plane, causing its death. Increased number of flights will increase such accidents. A possible solution to this problem could be advancement in technology such that no harm to the ecosystem is made.

Overall, with the increased human intervention, some problems have surely risen to the surface. Although, a completely neat solution is not available but if proper steps are taken the effect can surely be minimized.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Brain Drain

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

An increasing number of professionals, such as doctors and teachers are leaving their poor countries to work in developed countries.

What problems does this cause? What solutions can you suggest to deal with this problem?

Write at least 250 words.

The world has become globalized and in this new era, where boundaries have become blurred it is often seen that people in search of better opportunities are shifting their base to developed countries. This shift, especially of professionals such as teachers and doctors is having an adverse effect on the economies of poor countries.

The biggest problem because of the brain drain is that there is a shortage of skilled workers in a country, often effecting the industries and other sectors. For instance, if the most effective doctors of a country leave the country for better opportunities in abroad, it is obvious that the country is more likely to face shortage of good doctors and its public health services will falling behind. One way of solving the problem is by giving the highly skilled workers more salary or incentives to make them feel different from others. This will also develop an environment where the more talented will feel they are respected in the country.

Brain drain

Another issue rising because of brain drain is that it increases dependence on foreign technical assistance. Since the talented individuals are turning towards developed countries, often the country lags behind in technical areas and has to spend money asking for assistance from the developed countries. One solution of it could be that the country should limit the number of years a person can work in a foreign country. This will help the people to earn money and the country will still have hope of getting back the worker.

Overall, the immigration of highly talented people from a poor country is a setback for the country. However, if proper steps are taken it can surely be avoided.
