Career is the most important part of our lives and it is only we who shape our careers. Sometimes, it requires us to work hard towards achieving goals, while other times it is all about smart work. This time we are looking at the problems an individual has to face when he or she is sharing the room with someone! The below letter is a letter for accommodation sent by the individual.

You live in a room in college which you share with another student. However, there are many problems with this arrangement and you find it very difficult to work.
Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In the letter,

 

  • describe the situation
  • explain your problems and why it is difficult to work
  • say what kind of accommodation you would prefer

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.
Write at least 150 words.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been using the college provided accommodation for the past few years. However, recently my roommate changed and my current roommate and I are having issues because of different opinions and interest.

He is part of the extra-curricular activities and often tends to come late to the room which causes a disturbance in my sleeping patterns. Even more, often he plays loud music or brings along some of his friends for a chat. We both being from different streams, do not have much to talk about and there are times when our exams clash as well!

This change in our time tables and contradictory personalities has caused troubles in both our lives and there is an added pressure of adjusting when our entire focus should be on our careers. It would be helpful if you could either provide me with single accommodation or with someone who has a similar stream like mine.

Q1:Do you often use a dictionary?
ANS:Even though I am a big fan of the English lexicon, it has been a long while since I used the dictionary. I remember having one during school time and using one on quite regular basis during college years, especially the last semester when I had to write my dissertation. Once in a blue moon I come across a new word that I struggle to find the meaning and then in that moment I turn towards my old friend for some help and to find the meaning of that particular word.

Q2:Do you prefer to use an electronic dictionary or a dictionary made out of paper?
ANS:In this digital age where all the facilities are available on the touch screen of your Smartphone that provides you wealth of information it’s quite hard to overlook these benefits. I used to own an oxford paper dictionary at school times, I lost it after my college days and with the ease of using digital media and thanks to search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing etc it has become so much convenient and easy to get meaning of any word in any language not only in English that the thought of buying a dictionary never crossed my mind.

Q3:If someone gave you a dictionary as a gift, how would you feel?
ANS:I’d love to own a dictionary again. I’d be over the moon if one fine day someone gifts me a dictionary. There are some things that feel right the old school way and getting a dictionary as a gift would make me feel ecstatic. I have recently joined an institute as an English teacher and having a dictionary in my bag will make me ready to simplify any word in the English language on that very moment. As I take a cab back home from the institute which is around ten miles from my place so I can use that time to learn some new words.

Q4:Do you think it would be interesting to write a dictionary?
ANS:It will be wonderful to write one. The joy of simplifying difficult and complex words that even some native speaker might not know of will be quite a challenging and daunting task but at the same time one that will take my interest in the English language to the next level. It will also test my knowledge of the language and challenge me to get one on the previous versions as with every new edition new words are added and some of the previous words are explained with a better understanding. It will be a lot more than just interesting as seeing my name on the back of either Oxford or Cambridge official dictionary.

Speaking Part 2 – Crime

Q1: What sorts of crimes are common where you live?
Ans: Every major city in the world is infested with crime nowadays. No matter how good the police are or how tough the law and order situation is there are always a few people who are looking for trouble or trying to get you into trouble. I put up in London and even though it is very difficult to get away with crime in the city but still you don’t have C.C.T.V cameras everywhere in the city. Stabbing and robbery are some of the most common crimes committed in the area where I live. It is not safe to go out in the dark all by yourself as it can be very dangerous.

Q2: What do you think makes people commit serious crimes?
Ans: There are numerous reasons why people commit crime. Criminals have different mindsets and obviously necessities are different too. Some people commit crime to make some quick money as they are struggling to make enough money from their day jobs. There are people who are born into families of criminals so it comes quite natural to them. To these people committing crime is not a wrong thing but a way of living. There are professional criminals too who set out a particular target and work on it for months and in some cases even years. These professionals are a part of the society and it is very difficult for the police to distinguish them from a law abiding citizen.

Q3: Do you think that some form of entertainment, such as video games, promote violence?
Ans: Well they do, video games are violent and they take us into the world that does not exist in real. There are all sorts of video games for different age groups but the ones that promote violence are specifically rated 18+. There is this one video game called grand theft auto where you are set on missions to kill other people, steal cars and are involved in fights with the cops. If this game gets in the hands of kids it will encourage them to get violent and try these actions in real life. Even though video games are a form of entertainment but I strongly believe they should come with a warning and the violence in them should be significantly reduced.
