IELTS CUE CARD # Describe a city that you think, is very interesting

Sample Answer :

Every place has its own defining characteristics that make it unique in its own sense. Some places have the historical significance while others hold the religious and cultural essence. Similarly, some places have the scenic landscapes and others are the commercial occupational hubs. I believe, that the city, having an adequate blend of all, can be quoted as an interesting city in its own rights. I feel Jaipur, capital city of state Rajasthan as a very interesting city. I not only visited the city a number of times, but I also stayed here a couple of days altogether.

First time, I visited this place was, when I was in my high school. We had this Inter Public School Debate Competition, at one of the splendid schools of the country, MGD Jaipur. We were accommodated there for three days. Our school stood second in that competition and I was fourth in individual’s rankings. During my stay at school campus, I visited some of the historical landmarks in the city Jaipur. Amber fort in the outskirts of city, is a fabulous vastness built on the remnants of Aravalli hills. Hawa Mahal built by Maharana Pratap is an architectural marvel built in the heart of the pink city. Apart from that, Jantar Mantar and science observatory built by Sawai Jai Singh in 18th century reflects the scientific temper possessed by Indian rulers.

This city is surrounded by Aravalli, which offer it a marvellous scenic landscape. Moreover, Jaipur is a thriving industrial and commercial centre too. Centres of excellence, in traditional art and culture can be seen all around the city. New city is designed and built alongside the old one, which helps in the preservation of old, along with the trade and commerce mushrooming in the new one. This beautiful amalgam in the city makes it adaptive for various strata of people. So, all these things together make Jaipur a very interesting city for me.

Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do you like visiting places? Why?

Sample answer: Yes, a lot. I like visiting different places in India and I am very fond of visiting places outside too. Well, different places have different kinds of climate, vegetation, people and their cultures. All these varieties bring colours to the observation. Such multidimensional view of the world not just informs you about so many new things but it also comes as a pure entertainment.

Q. 2 Do you think that cities which are good in landscapes and weather are getting congested?

Sample answer: I think that, wherever this commerce and rapid urbanization takes place, there has to be the deterioration of the overall aesthetic aspects of the place. Take for instance Shimla city. It is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. If I just glance through all these years, I can see some evident changes related to commerce and congestion out there. Ecology has been severely hit by rapid footfalls, when one finds the shortage of food, water and accommodation at such a beautiful place. Traffic congestion and installation of air conditioners in shops and homes is something which the city never deserved.

Q. 3 Do you think there should be a controlled flow of tourists to hilly and religious destinations?

Sample answer: Yes, considering the fast pace of transport and communications infrastructure, increasing no of personal vehicles and higher spending power of our citizens, there has been a rapid spurt in the influx of tourists to such destinations. Therefore, the ecological balance of these places have been hit very badly in last two decades. Hence, I strongly affirm that the govt should come up with a policy to regulate the tourist flow and stop these beautiful places from getting further degraded.
