IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions related to other cultures

The examiner can ask some questions about other cultures if your cue card was related to cultural differences or foreign countries. Let’s look at some possible questions which may be asked in part 3 of the speaking test.

Q. 1: How important is it to learn about other people’s cultures?

Answer: Learning about other people’s cultures is very important in today’s globalised world. Cultural knowledge is required everywhere, be it business or travel or work. If we are familiar with the culture of a place, we can understand people better. This will make our work and life easier in a new place.

Q. 2: What difficulties can people living in a foreign country experience?

Answer A: In my view, the biggest problem which expats face is understanding the local language and culture. Loneliness, finding schools for their children, not getting food of their choice and the weather are some other common difficulties which people experience in a new country.

Answer B: I believe the most significant difficulties about living in a foreign country would have to do with understanding cultural norms and unspoken rules, especially during social interactions. Misunderstandings can be common phenomena. Generally fitting in as well as feeling like you belong would be another big challenge.

Q. 3: What benefits can there be for people working in a foreign country?

Answer: Working in a foreign country offers both personal and economic benefits to people. At a personal level, they can enjoy a higher standard of living. Their knowledge about cultural differences and languages also develops. Professionally, the work environment gives them greater exposure, which improves their professional skills. More importantly, international work experience which people gain is highly valued by employers.

Q. 4: Do you believe in stereotypes about different nationalities?

Answer: It’s a difficult question. In my view, the nationality and character of a person are two different things. Stereotypes about different nationalities are just based on people’s observations. They may or may not be accurate. I think that stereotypes don’t reflect reality. So, I don’t believe in them.

Q. 5: Are you in favour of adopting a universal language?

Answer: Certainly, adopting a global language would make our life easier. But, languages and cultures are inextricably intertwined. So, if we choose to have a common language, the cultural diversity will disappear. The loss will be irreparable. I don’t think it’s a wise idea to adopt a universal language.

Q. 6: What negative effects might come from a country losing its traditional cultures?

Answer: The loss of traditional cultures can affect a country in many ways. If there are businesses based on traditional skills, cultural loss can affect the economy of a country. Since traditional cultures represent a country, major changes in cultures can have an impact on tourism in that country.

Meanings of high-level words

expat: someone who does not live in their own country

intertwined: twisted together or closely connected so as to be difficult to separate
Stereotype: a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong

Cue Card – Describe a time when you were late

Punctuality is one of the most important things in life. Someone who is not punctual is more likely to fail in life than others. You can be the most talented or the most hard-working, but if you are not punctual, you are bound to fail. We can achieve almost anything by valuing time. This time we are looking at an IELTS cue card that talks about the importance of being punctual in life.

Describe a time when you were late for something important.
You should say:

  • when it was ?
  • why were you late?
  • how you managed the situation?
  • explain how you felt about it?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Usually, I am quite punctual. But one day I was really late for an important appointment. Today I will talk about that incident.

A few months ago, I appeared for the IELTS test. My speaking exam was scheduled on Monday, the 13th of June, at 9:00 am. I was supposed to report at the test venue, Hotel JSR Continental, Dehradun, at 8:30 am.

It rained heavily on Sunday evening, and the weather forecast predicted incessant rain for a few days. Considering the bad weather, I set the alarm for 6:00 am and went to bed early. I was feeling very nervous, and I couldn’t sleep well. Despite that, I woke up on time. After getting ready, I left the home to catch the bus. When I reached the bus station, to my surprise, there was no bus, and many commuters were stranded.

It was quite chaotic as nobody knew the reason why buses were not plying as usual. It was 7:50 am, and I was still at the bus station. My anxiety was increasing enormously because there was no other means to reach Dehradun from my village. Fortunately, a bus arrived, and I boarded the bus. It took a lot of time to reach Dehradun, as there was a head-on collision of a truck and a car on the main road. Looking at the site, I understood the reason why buses were running late.

Finally, I reached the centre at 8:55 am. I explained the situation to the centre manager and requested him to allow me to appear in the interview. He was very understanding. Later, I was given permission to give the speaking test. Even though I was very late, I didn’t lose hope. In the end everything worked out well. I did my best. I thanked God for everything and went home happily.

IELTS Cue Card – Teacher Who Influenced You

Describe a teacher who influenced you in your education.
You should say :
– Where you met him/her?
– What subjects she/he taught you?
– What was special about him or her?
Explain why this person influenced you so much.

Answer:
Teachers play a very important role in moulding the lives of a child. I consider myself lucky to get several dedicated teachers throughout my academic years. One of the teachers was Mr Swatantra Gupta. He was our English and social science teacher in class VII and taught us English in subsequent classes. He was a true mentor and guided all of us in the right direction.

Initially we thought that he did not know how to teach, but later on I realised that not only was his way of teaching unique, it was also effective. In the social science class, he used to make everyone stand up and read aloud. We thought maybe he is lazy enough not to speak for himself, but after a few months we realised that it was because of him that our pronunciation and style of speaking had improved.

He used to particularly make me stand up and ask me to read long paragraphs. It was tiring but, at the same time, very exciting. He even pushed to take part in different competitions and plays and suggested my name to the principal for the district debate competition.

I think it was his faith in me that I actually started working on my strengths and became more confident.

IELTS Cue Card – Describe a friend you like to spend time with

Describe a friend you like to spend time with.
You should say –
– When and how you met?
– How often you see this friend?
– What kind of personality it is?

Why you like to spend time with this particular friend?

Answer:

The friend I like to spend time with is Vipula. We met six years back, when we were in our senior school. She was a biology major, and I was doing my major in maths. But we did have our other classes, i.e., English, physics, and chemistry, together. We met, by accident, I would say. We had common routes and we shared the same school bus.

In the beginning I didn’t like her much, and our friendship had quite a weird beginning. I remember I lost my Parker pen, and it was very dear to me, and I saw the same pen with her, and I thought she had stolen my pen. I just went to her seat, took the pen and then told people that she stole my pen. I remember everyone started disliking her, talking less to her. But, some days later, I realised that it was actually her pen only and my pen was with my brother. I returned her pen and then told everyone the story and apologised for her.

I think things started becoming normal, and people started talking with her, and we started chatting because we had the same bus route. Within a month we were good friends, and we stopped interacting much with others.
We have been friends since then, and she is doing her MBBS now. Because of our busy schedule we don’t often see each other, but we take our time and meet every month.

She is a fantastic person, I would say. The best thing that I like about her is that no matter what problem the world throws at her, she is able to handle it with a smiling face. Rarely would you find her cribbing about her problems. The reason I spend so much time with her is that she makes life beautiful and without any problems.
