IELTS CUE CARD – Describe a time when you met a person for the first time

Describe a time when you met a person for the first time

You should say:

  • Who was the person?
  • When it was?
  • What was the conversation and why you still remember it?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Well, everybody knows that the first impression counts. Everyday life gives us plenty of opportunities to come across new people and interact with them.

Here, I’d like to share an incident when I happened to meet Reema for the first time, who later became my best friend. I can vividly recall the first day of my college when a North-East Indian girl with flawless rosy complexion sat beside me in the class.

Initially, I was reluctant to talk with her. Finally, I broke the ice and said, Hello to her with a smile and she smiled back. After the lecture, we went to the canteen to have a little chat. She told me that she didn’t really have many friends as she is painfully shy and she is trying to expand her social circle. She also told me a lot about herself and her life. I was really fascinated to know about her culture, rituals, food and language. What surprised me the most was her linguistic ability, she knew 5 languages. Even though this interaction lasted for a short while, it was very interesting. It gave me a glimpse into the lives of people living in North-Eastern India. They are very kind and open-minded people.

From that day onwards, we started spending time together. As time went by we became best friends. Our mutual understanding and common interests  are the backbone of our friendship.

IELTS CUE CARD – Describe the time you admired the sky for the first time

Describe the time you admired the sky for the first time

You should say:

  • when and where was it
  • what led you to think about the sky
  • explain what your thoughts were while admiring the sky

SAMPLE ANSWER

Generally, we tend to ignore the bounties bestowed upon us by nature. In the daily hustle bustle of our life we sometimes forget to enjoy the basic joys of living. Looking at the sky and admiring its infinite space is one of them.

If I have to go back and recollect when I first admired the sky, it would probably be in my childhood. I used to live in our ancestral house with my parents, grandparents and uncles. There was a huge garden in front of our house. Power failures were common in our area. I vividly remember, when I was about 6-7 years old, one late evening there was a usual power cut. It was quiet dark and all my family members moved out and sat in the garden as there was no power backup in our house in those times.

I sat on my mother’s lap. Everyone was chatting and my mother started singing. She taught me a song about the moon and the stars. While I was learning the song I looked towards the sky. That is probably my first recollection of admiring the sky. I was intrigued by the endless twinkling stars and the big moon perched on a fluffy cloud. Even though I tried to count the stars, I couldn’t. I wanted to reach out to the sky so that I could have a closer look at the world up above in the sky.

I can never forget that magical view of the sky. Going out and looking at the sky became a part of my childhood and those sweet memories make me happy even today.

IELTS CUE CARD – Describe a festival that is important in your country

IELTS CUE CARD – Describe a festival that is important in your country

You should say:

  • When the festival occurs?
  • Why it is celebrated?
  • What people do and explain what you like or dislike about it?

SAMPLE ANSWER

India is a country of festivals and celebrations. Today, I’d like to talk about one of the most popular festivals of North India. It is known as Diwali.

It is celebrated every year either in the month of October or November. The festival represents the victory of good over evil and its historical significance is related with Sikh and Hindu religions. According to the Hindu mythology, Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. The people of Ayodhya welcomed him by illuminating and decorating the whole city with earthen lamps.

So, Diwali is a festival of lights. The preparations of the festival go on for a month. People renovate, clean and decorate their homes with lights and candles. Another special thing about Diwali is making floral or geometric patterns on the floor using bright colours. Also, people do a lot of shopping for their households and buy gifts for their loved ones. In the morning, most families visit temples. In the evening, all family members worship the Goddess of wealth, take blessings from their elederly and enjoy various delicacies and exotic sweets. Thereafter, adults and children burst firecrackers.
I too enjoy celebrating this festival with my friends and family as it keeps us connected with our tradition. The only thing I dislike about the festival is the bursting of firecrackers. It creates air and noise pollution which causes health problems among elderly and the young ones. Even pets suffer a lot because of the loud noise caused by firecrackers.

IELTS CUE CARD – Talk about a time you received good news.

IELTS CUE CARD : Talk about a time you received good news.

You should say:

  • When it happened?
  • How you got the news?
  • What the news was about?
  • and explain why the news was special?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Good and bad news are a part and parcel of everyone’s life. Today, I’d like to talk about a time when I received good news.

I live in London. It’s been two years since I came here to pursue my higher education. My studies are quite demanding. Because of a busy schedule, I rarely get time to talk to my family and video calls are only possible on weekends. Last week, I video called my mother in India and I suddenly saw her holding a newborn baby in her arms. It was so cute – just a bundle of joy wrapped in my mom’s arms.

I asked my mother who the baby was, and she exclaimed with joy that it was the baby of my close aunt who had no children. It was indeed a surprise for me because I have been far away from my family; therefore, I wasn’t aware about it. My mother told me that the birth of this baby was a miracle given the health complexities my aunt had.  I thanked God for fulfilling my aunt’s wish and blessing her with a healthy baby she could call her own.

Emotions were running high in my head. It reminded me of the time when she used to visit us during summer holidays and she would talk to my mum about her feelings of loneliness and the social stigma of  being childless. I was very happy for her. I also felt sad because I could not hold this cute little baby in my arms and give both of them a warm hug.  Seeing a lot of other relatives in the video call calmed me down. They were all happy, cheering, having a great time, enjoying with the baby. It was truely good news for everyone.
