Sample Answer :

Children often have a tendency to choose their role models, by whom they are highly impressed. His mannerisms and qualities are considered to be flawless and perfect, and often serve as the reference point for the children, to build upon their character. When I was in primary school, I was fascinated by our headmistress, Mrs. Robinson.

Since she was our headmistress, therefore she was in charge of every activity in the primary wing of our school. She used to address the assembly, every morning, in auditorium. I happened to meet her for the first time, when she appointed me as the head boy of primary wing. Once appointed, I needed to summon up the daily attendance and performance report to her desk, in her office.

Well, Ma’am always used to dress elegantly and had a unique penchant of presentation. She had an impressive English oration and an enriched vocabulary collection, which made her concise and precise in her communication. She was a very prudent decision maker and an able administrator. Her leadership skills in running the school were very impressive. She was a strict martinet in matters of academic and sports performance. She exposed the children to various cultural and educational, interactive programmes, which were very beneficial. She used to teach us English too. Her ability to make the students understand, the basics of learning a language, were very simple and highly effective. I give full credentials to Ma’am, for offering me such a strong foundation in English proficiency. Moreover, she stressed on the importance of time table and discipline in life, most essential tools to achieve success. She inculcated the basic civic sense and instilled tremendous confidence in us.

I feel blessed by her mentorship. Her pedagogy was significantly helpful to me in several spheres of life. I thank her for everything I learnt from her in my childhood.

Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Why do children make role models?

Sample answer: Childhood and specially adolescence is the age of confusion and self-doubt. There is a constant conflict between dependency and personal freedom. Value system undergoes a major scrutiny, whereby, one’s own validated norms and values are established. In such a state of uncertainty, young people cling to someone who they feel good in justified sense. Then they start imitating the person and try to impersonalize his style.

Q. 2 What is the first aspect of impression?

Sample answer: The very first aspect of impression is physical personality and the manner of communication. Physical built up is the first thing, one observes in a person in the first meeting. It is the suaveness in the speech and manners that impresses next. True character and attitude become the impression indices, only after growing familiarity with the concerned person.

Q. 3 Do the role models change for the primary standard students?

Sample answer: I think, they may or may not. A child studying in a primary standard is too susceptible and sensitive to the novel phenomena exhibited by the people. Therefore, there is a fair probability, that a child likes a person on one day and the next day he starts admiring some other person because of the different qualities. So, in this way, he can even have multiple role models. For instance, a sports minded child may be impressed by Mike Tyson and Usain Bolt equally.

Sample Answer :

I have Ajay as my best friend. Most of the time he stays in India and I have to go to places abroad, as per the demands of my marketing job. Due to this, we get the chance to meet, only occasionally. But, otherwise, we have regular chats and video sessions, as such. He has picked up jogging very seriously, recently. He has this problem of bent feet, that are uncomfortable even in the super branded sports shoes. He often complains about the pain in feet, so one day, I made queries to find out a shoe parlour in Italy, where they have a rich experience of designing customized shoes as per the requirements. I am currently located in Switzerland. Therefore, I can easily get those shoes availed in Italy. As I have mentioned, I have chosen those particular shoes, as I feel those as the perfect requirement for him right now, so he can get well with his running after I gift him those shoes.

His birthday is coming in next month. I have decided, that I should send him the courier with this special pair of shoes on his birthday. By that time, it would also be feasible for me to locate those shoes in Italy and make arrangements for shipping.

I am sure, he would be delighted, after seeing this surprise on his birthday. I can understand the trouble he is persistently facing with his sports shoes. He has left no brand untried, whichever is available in India. He has searched on net, for customized shoes and came to know only ambiguously, that the shoes can be found somewhere in Europe. It was then, when he asked me to find out from locals in Europe. After gifting him those shoes, I shall be feeling very satisfied to see my friend happily comfortable. I will feel, that the effort made to handpick these particular shoes from a place far away from India, has been fructified.

Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 When do we generally exchange gifts?

Sample answer: Only on some special occasions like anniversary, birthday or on some festivities like Diwali, Eid do we exchange gifts with our close friends and relatives.

Q. 2 What is the importance of Gifts?

Sample answer: Gifts are the things, which may be of some utility or purely for entertainment. They are chosen as per the special liking of the person. I think, gifts acts as souvenirs or symbolic gestures that represent the feelings of one person for other. They actually represent the love, kindness, compassion and empathy for the person. Whenever one looks at the gift, he will remember the person who gifted that particular gift.

Q. 3 Do you thing expensive gifts are better than the ordinary ones?

Sample answer: No, I don’t think like that. I believe it is the feelings and emotions that matter the most in presentation of a gift. Expensive gifts are not necessarily the better ones. Take for instance, when I finished my graduation, my friend gifted me a watch. It may not be that expensive watch but it symbolized his emotions for me and his advice to me to stay updated with time. So, the price factor did not matter at all.

IELTS Cue Card #Describe a thing you cannot live without

Describe a thing you cannot live without.
You should say:

  • What is that thing?
  • Why and since when is it so important for you?
  • Has it ever been absent in your life? How did you feel then?

And what will happen when it expires.

IELTS CUE CARD #Describe a thing you cannot live without

Sample Answer :

We all have few things or commodities in our lives, which are considered to be indispensable to our daily lives. That might be a pet for someone, a bike for a mountaineer, makeup for a celebrity star or a balanced diet for a health conscious person. It is really difficult to think of living in their absence. Similarly, I am hooked to my daily work out. I mean, I just can’t imagine what my life would be, without my daily rigorous set of exercises. I do not go to a gymnasium. Rather, I prefer free hand exercises in open.

I have been a heath freak since my early teens. I used to play football in my school. I was very fond of running, cycling and swimming too. When I started with my graduation, I watched a famous movie Rocky, played by Sylvester. It had a mind blowing effect on my psyche. I just loved his fitness and training workout schedule. It was so bare and brazenly bold rigorousness, in his physical workout, that it caught me by the nerves, instantaneously. Since then, it has become like a ceremony for me, to daily indulge in my workout. It keeps me fit and gives me that feel of feeling good about myself. Watching my body drenched in my sweat gives me jets of adrenalin rush.

Whenever I visit my home, I get immersed in a total relaxed, cool kind of fun with my parents and children. On those days, I just chill and forget my daily ritual. I spend most of my time talking with my family or watching some movie or just lazily basking in the sun. I feel blissed in those moments too, spending good time with my family. Obviously, I miss my schedule, but that is compensated by love and affection I receive at home.

I will try to maintain this discipline till my last days. With age, there might be a mitigation in my physical strength and consequently, in hardness of my exercise. But, I will keep on doing regular exercises to feel healthy and happy.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
Indispensable necessary: Oxygen is indispensable for us
Brazen bold: Prime Minister has a brazen manner of communication
Indispensable reduction: Over the time, there has been mitigation in water table
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do you think that addiction to good things is good?

Sample answer: I think the word addiction does not denote a negative connotation here. If one gets habituated to a discipline that brings good results for his body and mind, then that addiction is definitely considered to be good.

Q. 2 Some people have a special nostalgia for particular things like old gifts, coins or any piece of clothing which they always keep with them. Why do they have such association that they can’t live without them?

Sample answer: Emotional gatherings accumulated over a period of so many years take the form of a particular thing. All the past memories of people and incidents are absorbed in some particular thing; to which we get associated. So, losing that thing implies virtual loss of those feelings and emotions too, which makes us feel very uncomfortable.

Q. 3 What is one thing that children can’t live without?

Sample answer: Children simply can’t live without love and care. Little children do not know the basic survival techniques and require great attention and love in order to sustain. In an atmosphere of utter negligence and hatred, it would be very difficult for children to live.

Q. 4 Does our association with the material things bring us pain?

Sample answer: Yes. Although association with the material things brings us joy and pleasure initially but it becomes a bitter experience in the absence of that particular thing. For instance, a student who is addicted to play video games on his mobile, will feel restless, if that phone is lost or due to any reason, he is not able to play the video games. Therefore, one should be aware of this cause effect relationships.

You should say:

  • Who told you the story and when?
  • What was the story about?
  • How did you find it?

And how do you feel when you remember it.

IELTS CUE CARD # Describe a story told by someone and which you still remember

Sample Answer :

It is a commonplace tradition to tell stories to children. Children love to float in that world of fancies and fantasies. I used to be in kindergarten as a small kid, when I heard this story, which I still remember. We, the kids, used to have a story listening session from our textbook. Our teacher used to narrate a different story every day with a moralistic ending. Although, I remember many other stories too that I heard in my childhood but this was the first one I remembered and I still get inspired by the message it bestows upon me. My class teacher, Mrs. Anamika told this story to the class, when I was in my second year of elementary education.

I am sure, we all have heard this story in our childhood, that is, The thirsty crow. A crow, who was very thirsty on a hot summer day, was unable to find water anywhere in the vicinity. He was feeling too tired to fly afar. He was pondering over his miserable condition when suddenly, he happened to see a jar with water, the level of which was too low for crow to sit and drink it. For a moment crow was anxiously puzzled, kept on trying his beak touch the water by tilting more and more in jar but could not help himself. He was trying too hard when EUREKA! an idea struck his mind. He picked up a pebble stone lying nearby and dropped it inside. He felt happy to see the water level rise. Within moments, crow laboured to fill the whole bottom with stones and eventually, reached to the water and drank it.

It had a moral, which teacher told us in the end that, where there is will, there is way. Although, I remembered the story but I could not grasp the moral at that age. I, rather, found the story amusing and interesting, to see that crow had brains and he could think of that idea. After that story, I used to look at crows for a little longer maybe, and used to think about their clever wits. It gave me Goosebumps, my observation of crows after that story.

Later, when I grew up, I happened to see this story again, as an act in a stage play. I recollected the story and for the first time, I listened to the message which was very encouraging. Since that day, whenever the things around me are not getting fruitful, I do not quit rather keep on trying, because I started believing in, Where there is will, there is a way.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
EUREKA cry of joy: When Archimedes discovered buoyancy, he said EUREKA
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Did someone in your home tell you the stories? How did you feel?

Sample answer: Yes, it was my grandfather, who used to tell me stories, when I was a kid. I sometimes, used to go to his bed at night. He used to cuddle me, make me laugh and then told the stories. Usually, I used to be frightened, as they used to have ghosts and fairies as characters. Sometimes, when I felt tired, I even used to sleep while listening to the story.

Q. 2 What do you think, are the benefits of storytelling to children?

Sample answer: Well, I think there are a lot of benefits to count upon. First of all, a child learns his reading, writing and speaking skills at an age when he is interested in listening stories. Listening to stories makes his comprehension and clarity of words better and better. It also ignites the creativity of a child. By listening to stories, children develop the art of imagination. He starts drawing mental pictures and begins with logical reasoning too. Moreover, it develops a bond of respect and love between the narrator and listener.

Q. 3 Do you still listen to stories? If yes, which kind?

Sample answer: Well, I still find the story listening a fun but that is only occasional on my car radio. Otherwise, now I enjoy reading and watching stories over media and books. Primarily, I like crime thrillers full of suspense. They become my titillations in my spare time, as a hobby.
