IELTS Cue Card Sample Question # Historical Event

History is not just about dates or the name of the rulers. There is so much more that an individual learns from history, the reason for the present and more importantly, the predictions for the future. This time we are looking a cue card aimed at history.

Describe a historical event that you find interesting:
You should say –

  • when it took place
  • what historic connection it has
  • and how it impacted the history

and explain why you find it interesting.

SAMPLE ANSWERS 1

There have been so many events in the past century, that shaped our present. On a worldwide level, the rise of Hitler was the most interesting event I can think of. He was the one person who single handedly changed the course of the world history.

After Germany lost World war I and was forced to sign the treaty of Versallies, there was nothing much left with Germany. But, under the leadership of Hitler, it rose again and fought back. People followed him even in acts that were cruel and it takes great leadership skills to do that.

May be there won’t have been any Second World War, if it was not for Hitler. Countries like Russia and USA rose to power only when they won the Second World War. Before that it was only Britain ruling the world.

The one thing that I really find captivating here is that one man, not even an army, one dictator could go against the entire world and shake them from their roots. Sometimes I wonder if only he was a positive leader, the world could have been a better place to live in.

SAMPLE ANSWERS 2

I remember one particular event that I read in my History textbook about the rat war in Indo-China. When French invaded Vietnammese,  they tried to rebuilt things. So, Hanoi city was built with beautiful Canals but the dilemma was that the canals built for the hygeine became the perfect breeding ground for rats causing plague.

To stop the spread of plague, a rat hunt was started in 1902. Vietnamese workers were hired for the task and were paid for each rat being caught. People began to catch rats in thousands. The payment was done when a tail of a rat was shown as a proof that a rat had been killed. Many people began just clipping the tails and collecting the bounty. Many people even began to raise rat to earn more.

The reason I really find this interesting is because it showed that at some juncture even the superior power of a colonial master fails and even the weak can assume a very strong bargaining position.

Importance Of Exercise # Cue Card

Cue Card – Speaking part-2

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE

  • What kind of exercise do you do?
  • When do you exercise?
  • How do you feel after exercise?
ANSWER

I believe that no one in this world can deny the importance of exercise, whether it is yoga or cycling or jogging. I think that people who do daily exercise tend to live a healthier life.

Exercising is very important for me. I make it a point that I am able to do it on regular basis. I usually do cycling in the morning for an hour, although I sometimes even prefer jogging. There are even days when it is raining and in those days I mostly do yoga. The point is I make sure that I am doing some or the other form of exercise daily in the morning.

Sometimes it become quite tough for me to do exercise in the morning. In those days, I usually take a stroll in the evening in a nearby park.

Exercising always helps to begin the day on a fresh note. I feel as if the entire day gets perfectly scheduled if I exercise. I am a writer and for most of the times I am sitting and typing. Exercising helps me to give my body the required time and also often I get great ideas during exercise. It seems as if it just provides me the right adrenaline rush. And I think that every individual must exercise daily.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Earthquakes

Earthquakes are a kind of natural disaster that destroys livelihoods more than any other form of natural disaster does. Not that the impact of the others is not high, but the frequency of earthquakes in recent times has been so high, that it has impacted livelihoods and business like no other. This time let us have a look at some questions that could be asked related to a calamity in the Section II of the speaking section in IELTS.

Describe a natural calamity that you fear. You should say:

  • what it is and why do you fear it
  • how long it has existed
  • how it affects people’s lives

and explain how you think the damage can be reduced.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

The one calamity that truly shakes me up is Earthquake. The reason I really am afraid of Earthquakes is that they cause more destruction and are often responsible for causing other forms of natural calamities. For instance, landslides and then tsunamis. Earthquakes, if not take away lives, do cause some building to fall. Often these are the life time savings of an individual. Even more, it has been observed that Earthquakes often come at times when nothing much could be done. Like, during night, when everyone is sleeping. Most people do not even feel the tremors until they die.

Earthquakes have been part of our history since Earth was made. They were responsible for shaking things up and changing our lands. Earthquakes surely bring about lot of changes. Not only do they cause deaths and tremors, often times they shatter people’s dream. For example, the 2001 Earthquake of Gujarat, not only caused loss of life, but there were many who had just built a home, or had bought a shop. People lost almost everything in it.

The only way we can fight back Earthquakes is by building homes and shops that are strong enough to handle Earthquakes. Also, there should be better analysis of Earthquake done to ensure that people know about it before hand and could take preventive measures.

EARTHQUAKES

EARTHQUAKES

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

The one natural calamity that I dread is Earthquake. The mere sight of losing everything that you have, not only the ones you love, but your dreams, shakes me up. Recently, while watching a video on Earthquake I saw a person half body under a stone and he was crying. The scene was so painful that I felt bad for the entire day. Even more, Earthquakes happen so fast and change things in way that one can never imagine.

Earthquakes not only affect lives primarily but are also responsible for causing other natural calamities, like Tsunami and landslides. On top of it, they have become so frequent that it seem as if some part of the Earth is always shaking up. As far as I know, Earthquakes are the reason Earth and all our lives came into existence and they have been part of us since Earth came into being.

The only way we can fight back Earthquake is by making sure that our walls are strong enough to endure it. Not only of our home but of our office and any place that we go. It is often our negligence to make safer places, that makes the impact of Earthquake worse. Also, proper analysis must be done for the Earthquake and if there is a chance of it, people should be made aware about it through news channels or any other medium of mass communication.

This time we are looking at sample questions that could be asked in IELTS Cue card section related to the new year celebrations.

Describe a new year celebration that you still remember. You should say :

  • with whom did you celebrate?
  • what did you do in the party?
  • why is it so special for you?

Also, explain the importance of new year parties in your life?

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

I am 23 now and consciously attended around 12 parties. But, I think the one party that I remember and cherish the most is the one we had in our first year of graduation. I had cleared a competitive exam and during the new year our exams were going on. So, no question of going home. We all were feeling a little low, but at around 11 in the night, we heard music. All of the students in our hostel wing, came out only to find that our Warden had organized a DJ and stuff to eat. He asked us all to join us. Overwhelmed by his gesture, we all went down and danced the whole night.

I remember dancing with around 400 people at songs I had never heard, the languages that I don’t understand but it was pure fun. We all became good friends after that and had a blast for the next four years of our graduation. I think the one reason I cherish it the most is because it brought with it lot of new things for me. I met new people, did things I never did. Like, dancing like a serpent and then like a girl. We were purely enjoying. There was no senior or junior, just bunch of people living the moment.

Although, party animal, is not the word that I would choose for myself. But, yes I do party on New year. For me, it is the time when I meet all the people I know, the ones I care for. Most probably, go out travelling with them. I believe, life is busy and we should just grab every occasion that we get to enjoy.

NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

New year celebrations have never been very exciting for me but I remember the 2016 New year. It was the best new year I had till date and assume it to be the best till date.

It was during the end of 2015 that there were lot of personal and professional issues I was struggling with. For some reasons, I started feeling as if this is how life is going to be for a longer run now. Sitting on my couch when everyone else was partying I remember crying and feeling really bad.

At around 11:30, a really good friend of mine, I recently had a fight with dropped by me. She had been my school friend and we had shared lot of things together. Fighting with her did have an impact on me. She had beer with her, scooty keys and we just left the home together.

When the entire world was partying outside, I remember feeling the air and then reaching our school terrace and drinking beer. We revived our memories together, things that we had done and how life had just changed in some years. How quickly we had grown up. There was nothing particular but having that kind of talk, actually rejuvenated me. It made things so much more easier for me. Since that year, every year we meet at our school terrace for a bottle of beer and lot of memories together.

I think New year parties are a good way of celebrating and everyone should celebrated New year but I believe everyone should enjoy in the way that best suits them.
