IELTS Cue Card – Environment Condition

The environment has changed in the last few decades. As man has improved upon the technology, there has been a considerable decline in the environment, with some of the technologies causing more harm than ever. The ozone layer has depleted, and there are clear signs of other harmful effects found in humans and animals. Today, through the cue card questions, we shall be looking at a harmful environmental problem.

Describe a harmful environmental problem.

You should say:

  • What is it
  • How it is harmful
  • What harmful effects it creates

and explain what can be done to prevent this environmental problem.

enviroment problems

A healthy environment is the most important thing for being alive. However, with changing times and improving technologies and declining man-made activities, there has been a considerable effect on the environment, causing a lot of problems. I believe the one problem that we all are facing and will surely decline more is the reducing ozone layer effect.

The ozone layer is the most important layer for us, as it helps protect us from the harmful effects of UV rays, but with the holes in the ozone layer, it has been seen that the temperature of Earth is rising and then there are glaciers melting. Even more, since now the UV rays directly hit the humans, there are more chances of getting skin cancer and cataracts. Even more, some animals are losing their fertility because of ozone layer depletion.

In addition, it causes immune system depletion in human beings, making them susceptible to all possible diseases. There has been a seen effect on the plants, with some plants not being able to grow well, as there has been a decline in the photosynthesis and flowering. Ozone layer depletion has also caused loss of biodiversity in our oceans; rivers and lakes could reduce fish yields for commercial and sport fisheries.

There are several effects of ozone layer depletion, and the scientists are working towards improving the condition of ozone. It can be done if we start planting more trees and stop using the vehicles at such an alarming rate. Even more, a shift towards industries that shed less smoke needs to be promoted.

Our environment is on the decline, and there are several issues that have affected the lifestyle of human beings. One of them is the increased noise pollution. With the coming of railways, jets and vehicles, one can see that there is more honking and unnecessary noise being created.

Noise pollution can be caused by vehicles that honk for no reason, by aeroplanes and rails and often when a rocket is launched. It doesn’t seem to harm at the first point, so if there is someone honking, one won’t die, but when it happens on an everyday basis, so if every day a person is hearing only honks or other undesirable noises, he or she becomes more irritable. Even more, the kids who have very sensitive ears are likely to be affected very badly. In some cases, when the music was very loud, there have been cases of children going deaf.

Noise pollution is very harmful for the old people because, like children, they also have sensitive ears. It has been observed that it not only affects the ears but in some cases even causes heart attacks or nervous system failure.

Apart from humans, noise pollution affects the birds and the other animals, causing a shift in their behaviour. Many marine animals, especially whales, use hearing to find food, communicate, defend and survive in the ocean. Excessive noises are causing a lot of injuries and deaths to whales.

These effects may not sound troubling, but the truth is, with time, the consequences can be very worrying. There are different ways by which we can surely reduce noise pollution. One of them is switching off the devices when not in use. So, the fan should be switched off or the computer, because when not in use, it makes certain noises. Even more, construction of soundproof rooms for noisy machines in industrial and manufacturing installations must be encouraged. Also, vegetation along roads and in residential areas is a good way to reduce noise pollution, as it absorbs sound.

I believe we need to start working before it is too late.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

I remember buying my first laptop after months of saving. At that time, there were two kinds of jobs that I was doing; one was as a freelance writer and the other was as a software engineer. Although I could have bought a 30000 laptop from the earnings of a month, when the day came closer of actually buying the laptop, I, for a second, thought about it again and, for some reason, decided not to buy a normal personal computer and decided to buy a Macintosh.

There was no definite reason for buying it. It is just that while I was about to buy my first laptop, something just came back to me. Some years ago, while having a conversation with my uncle, I told him that it is a laptop which is very important for me. I would buy myself a Macintosh as the first laptop.

The Macintosh that I fell in love with was the MacBook Air. You could just go on doing your work in it forever. And then there is so much attachment to the machine because of its founder, Steve Jobs. I mean, every time you work on a Macintosh, it feels like you are doing great work and you are being unique.

I remember having saved for three months before I could buy a Macintosh, and it took me many sleepless nights before it was mine, and trust me, the day it was mine, it was amazing, beautiful. Its features were so amazing that it has been six years since I first bought my first Macintosh, and it is still running fine.

The reason that I bought it was that I wanted to know Apple better, and it is when you use a device of a certain company that you are able to know the company and its ethics better.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

I am a blogger, and there was a time when I wanted to open my own travel blog. For me to be able to open and run an efficient blog, I required a camera. Having thought a lot about it and talking to many people, I decided on buying a DSLR. But DSLRs are expensive, and the one that I thought was fit for my job cost me around 50000.

During that time, I remember earning 35000 monthly, and after having covered my expenses, I was left with almost 15000 per month. It took me around 3 months before I could buy my first DSLR.

It is because of it that today I am able to click great photographs and also shoot videos. At that time, I felt as if I were spending money, but looking back at it, I can surely say that I had made an investment. My blog is now running really well, and it is great to be able to make something new every day.

I have been inspired by many people in my life due to their habits and ways of living life. There are many people in my life who have had exemplary conduct and principles for leading life. They have set a good example for me and also guided me onto the right path at all times. Among these people my paternal uncle’s contribution is unforgettable.

My uncle is an upstanding citizen who has led his life with honesty and gratitude. As a high-ranking army officer, he has always taken wise decisions pertaining to his official duties and as a family man. The basic values of humanity and the importance of education are always the crux of his teachings. He is about to retire from his job and leads a peaceful life with contentment and satisfaction.

From my childhood, he has given me his affection and mentorship with strictness. He gave me guidance every step of the way and taught me moral values through practical lessons and real-life examples. He has also helped me with my studies and helped me make important decisions in life.

Growing up, I learned a lot from his actions and from what he had to say. I admire and respect him the most and consider him to be my role model due to his uncompromised honesty and integrity. I not only enjoy eating food of different varieties but also love cooking and baking. Therefore, I keep trying my hand at preparing different types of cuisines at home. I am basically a very creative person, and I’ve always had a knack for cooking. Cooking is actually the art of imagination and presentation. The food we cook should not be only tasty but also presentable.

Everyone in my family is fond of cakes and cookies. Since it’s my brother’s birthday next week, I have planned to bake a chocolate truffle cake for the occasion. I really want to surprise him by making his favourite cake, and that too on his birthday. In order to learn the process and methods of cake-making, I have not only watched YouTube videos but have also attended some short-term cooking classes as well.

The recipe for making a chocolate truffle cake is very simple. In a large saucepan, I will cook the milk, butter and chocolate over low heat until melted. I will remove the liquid mixture from the heat and will keep it aside for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, I will preheat the oven to 350°. Then, I will mix all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda and salt into the liquid mixture in a large bowl. After that, I will blend the mixture until it becomes smooth. Then, the batter will be transferred to a round and greased baking pan and will be baked for about 30 minutes in the oven.

Once it is baked, I will spread ganache over the top and sides of the cake. I hope, with this small gesture of mine, I will be able to bring a smile to my brother’s face.
