The Confusion # Writing Task

Writing task in IELTS consist of two parts. In academic, the first part is either a report or summary writing of a graph and the second part is essay writing. In general IELTS, the first part has a letter and the second part is that of essay. Now, the big question is are the two valued the same or their are different marks associated with them. Let’s clear the confusion.

Are both the task marked individually or as whole?
The two sections of the writing task are marked individually i.e. the examiner will first mark you on the first section and give you a band and then mark the next section. After marking both the sections, your overall band for the writing part is calculated.
Do both the tasks have same weight-age?
No they are not. Rather, the worth of writing task 2 is just the double of writing task 1. This means that 30% marks are for the writing task 1 while 60% marks are for writing task 2.
Can I know my individual scores?
No, you cannot. IELTS will not tell you the individual scores of each section but will tell you the entire score that you have gained.
Are you marked on the same criteria on both the task?
NO. You are marked on four critieria’s in both the task and although three of them are same, there is a difference of one criteria. Let us have a look.
The one’s common to both are –
1. Coherence and cohesion – Paragraph Linking and referencing.
2.Grammatical range and accuracy – Sentence structures, tenses, punctuation and number of errors.
3.Lexical Resource – Vocabulary, collocations, spellings and number of errors.
The different one’s –
Writing task 1- Task achievement – information, overview, key features
Writing task 2- ideas, addressing the task, conclusion, developing the ideas.
