    • What is the photo about?
    • Why do you feel proud of the photo?
Sample Answer

A picture is worth a thousand words. It is often easier to illustrate with a picture than to explain with words. Photography as a hobby can be instantly gratifying, especially if you find the perfect movement to capture. I am certainly not a photographer, but I guess I can click good pictures. Maybe that’s why my friends call me a shutterbug. I have clicked on several pictures, but the one I will describe today stands out as the best among the others. A few years back, my brother got selected for the Indian Army as a lieutenant; it was a dream that came true for him. I have seen him burning the midnight oil to clear the mandated tiers. As per the criteria, he went to training for a year after we were invited on the day of his POP. It is a very special occasion for the newly qualified lieutenant and their family members. It is the opportunity to celebrate their hard work and dedication in completing the intensive training course that is required for them to become a lieutenant. Our eyes were gleaming with happiness and were filled with tears; seeing him in the uniform was a scornful moment for us. My mother couldn’t control herself and rushed towards my brother to hug him. I immediately took out my phone and captured that moment. The picture turned out to be the greatest of all time and is now framed in our living room. Everyone in my family praised me for the perfect click, whereas my brother kept a separate copy of it in his room. Whenever I see that picture, I get nostalgic and relive that beautiful moment. For me, it is one of my promising clicks.

CUE CARD – Describe something you taught to your friend or relative

You should say:

    • What did you teach him/her?
    • When it was?
    • How long was it for?
    • And explain how you felt about it?
Sample Answer

Well, I strongly believe that sharing knowledge with others always enhances our skillset. Today, I would like to talk about a skill which I mastered at a very young age; these are my culinary skills.

Around three years when I was residing in a hostel during my college days, and I can still recall that I was far away from home. So, I had to do everything on my own. Luckily, I did know how to cook, so it was never an issue for me. Although, my then roommate, Teena who is now a very bosom friend of mine, did not know cooking. Therefore, I helped her out in gaining this essential skillset throughout the time when we were together.

Even though she was a quick learner, when it came to cooking meals, she was terrible, and I had to literally guide her at every step. I enjoyed teaching her though because she was such a fun-loving person that I never had to keep track of time. Her witty sense of humor always made it an easy task for me to teach her. I taught her not only making a sandwich but also, heavy Indian cuisines like butter chicken, mutton biryani, Rassam rice and many more. It was a wholesome experience.

Moreover, now whenever we talk to each other, major part of our conversation is about cherishing the good old times that we shared together. She thanked me at the time and even till date she appreciates me for making her well versed with the skill as it is a life sustaining skillset. Today, she masters it and cooks for everyone in her family and friends.

Overall, this was something which I taught my friend.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions)
Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe an object you find particularly beautiful’

Q1.What are the things that young people can teach old people to do?

There are so many things that youngsters nowadays can teach old people, especially about technology. Mobile phones are a necessity in today’s modern world, so it is important that they learn the right way of using internet. Moreover, it brings them closer to their loved ones who have been displaced to faraway places due to hectic work life.

Q2.Why do older people have problems learning new things?

That is an interesting question. In my opinion, the reason why I feel older people face problems in learning new things is their poor receptivity. In old age people suffer from many severe disorders like arthritis, dementia and many more. Thus, it is hard for them to remember things and one must continuously remind them about the same.

Q3. Do you think showing is a better way than telling?

Yes, because it is a general human tendency that we respond to those things better when we see them visually than hearing. The brain easily grasps things and remembers them for a longer time.

CUE CARD – Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.

Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.

You should say:

    • Where the place is?
    • When you visited?
    • Why the air was not good?
    • And say how you felt about the place?
Sample Answer 1

Air pollution is now considered to be the world’s largest environmental health threat. It is hard to escape, no matter how prosperous an area you live in. It is all around us.  As day by day the increase in population, the number of motor vehicles also increased and motor vehicles cause high emissions, thereby causing pollution.  I can mark this as one of the strongest reasons for creating pollution after my current visit to a place where the air was highly contaminated.

My family planned to meet our extended family which lives in Delhi. We were extremely excited to meet them and equally excited to explore Delhi. The moment we arrive at Delhi airport we witnessed a change in the air quality. Everywhere it was black smoke and I could feel polluted particles in my breathing.  Despite the poor air quality, I tried to make the most of my trip and explore some of the famous places in Delhi. We visited Red fort, which is one of the most visited places in Delhi and holds historical importance, but again, the pollution made it challenging as I could barely see the intricate details on the walls due to the smog.. Even though I had a mask throughout the time but did not help me much. I was constantly thinking about how hard it must be for people to live here for a longer period of time.

Overall, I was completely dissatisfied with the trip. It made me appreciate the importance of environmental conservation and taking steps to reduce pollution levels for a better future.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning Sentence
Appreciate to value I appreciate your efforts.
Dissatisfied to be unhappy I am dissatisfied by your results.

Q3.Do you think the city is cleaner, or dirtier than the countryside?

Well, undoubtedly the countryside is cleaner than the urban areas.  As it is less crowded, More population results in more pollution. Industries, coal power plants, etc. are major causes of air pollution, which are found more in cities.

Sample Answer 2

Well, with the advent of urbanization it is quite obvious that the world has become a really compact space and pollution add on to it. Today, I would like to elaborate on one such place where the air was extremely polluted, the place is Delhi.

I went to Delhi last year and I had a three day stay there due to some work. I could clearly make out the difference in the air, for it was really polluted and thus, the visibility was highly reduced. In addition to this, there was this never ending queue of vehicles lined one after the other consistently honking at each other. Somehow, we managed to reach the hotel where our reservations for the stay were done. I was so tired that I directly went to sleep.

One of the main reasons why I feel the air was polluted was the high release of harmful pollutants in the air which is not only detrimental to environment but also, to the living beings. I could actually understand now, why people who live in metropolitan cities suffer from breathing problems which is again due to pollution. I personally felt claustrophobic even though I was outdoors, as the air was so suffocating.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning Sentence
Detrimental harmful Smoking is detrimental to health.
Verdant full of greenery Dehradun is a verdant city.
Carcinogen cancer-causing substance Tobacco is carcinogenic.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions)
Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.’

Q1.Is there more pollution than in the past?

Definitely yes, as the number of high-rise apartments and vehicles has increased. So, there is more release of pollutants into the air. Also, people are very callous about using their vehicles, they do not get their cars and bikes checked on a regular basis leading to the emission of carcinogens into the air whereas, this was not the case previously. As cities were less developed and verdant.

Q2.Do you think wind has any effect on pollution?

Well, I for sure think that wind contributes to the rising pollution as the suspended dust particles flow along the wind which may result in reduced visibility and detrimental effects on the eyes.
