Let’s Talk Family # Discussion Topic

Family is one of the most common topic that is asked in IELTS. Although, they often ask it in the part I of speaking section, questions related to it even get asked in the discussion topic.
Let’s have a look at some of them.

What are some of the ways in which family members can be similar to each other?
Although every individual is unique, there are some characteristics that they do inherit from their family members. Usually, family members are alike in their physical appearances. For example-: children look like their parents in their facial expressions, type of color, height etc. some of them even inherit character and behavior from their parents.
It is often seen that daughters are more similar to their mothers rather than to other male relatives. Do you agree. disagree?
We cannot say about every individual, as all of them are unique. There are girls who look like their father or other male relative. These include facial features, hair, color, heights etc. however, mostly girls do resemble their mother in physical appearances.
Do you think people are more influenced by their family or friends and in what ways?
Most people spend their growing years with their family and it is during these years that the personality of an individual is formed. Even after that people usually spend a lot of time with their family members. However, recently it has been seen that people were influenced by their friends. This happens often when individuals spend more time with their friends than family. Rather, I believe that it is the ones with whom we spend more of our times and trust more, have influence on our personality.

Materialistic Interests # Discussion Topics

The discussion section of speaking section consist of a varied range of questions. Given below are some of the questions that could be asked if the cue card is related to gifts. These questions asked are related to materialistic interests.

Do you think people have become more or less materialistic in 25 years?
I feel that people’s attitude towards materialistic things is not a state depending on time, it is more of an individual thing. For example: earlier kings and queens used to live lavishly and it was the common man who lived a simple life. The difference is that at present people have access to more luxuries and comforts which were not available in the past. The main reason being the economic progress that we have made. Apart from it, the attitude towards materialistic remains the same.
What are the things that give a sense of an honor to people these days?
Honor is very personal thing and different people feel honored by different things. Some of them get a great deal of prestige in material possessions. For example-: having a luxurious car or a bungalow. There are even some who desire for power. Giving them political power is a feeling of honor for them. There are even some who take pride in their education. Certain professions like engineers, doctors and teachers are more respected in the society.
What do you think were the things that were a status symbol in the past?
I am not sure whether material possessions were status symbol but having a lot of land surely was considered honorable in the society. Even more, political power and educated people were considered status symbol. I believe status symbol mostly remains the same throughout the ages.
Do you think that these days’ people buy a lot of things for prestige rather than genuine need?
Certainly yes. At present times people have money and often they go for luxurious items, mostly because they want others to look upon them. For example. It might be possible that a person needs a car, but when buying they will chose the one considered elite in the society.
What things, according to you, might give prestige to people in future?
I believe, even in future wealth will be a major factor. Apart from it education and advancement in technology might be something that gives honor to people. Also, I think communication abilities might give a sense of pride in future.

Children how to be good members of society # IELTS Essay

IELTS Writing Task – 2

Topic

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Answer (Band Level 7.5)

Children are believed to be our world’s future and this is why they should be taught to become responsible members of society. Both parents and school are supposed to shape the children into excellent human beings. They are born with some traits and others are adopted during their growing stages.

Parents are the ones who imbibe good morals and etiquettes in their children at home during their initial stages which they maintain for the rest of their lives. It is the environment provided by them that mould the children into the human beings they grow up to be and their treatment of people around them. It is at home with the parents they discuss about the world and its vices, in order to distinguish between the good and the bad. The parents lay the foundation stone of their children upon which they grow into and become good Samaritans.

On the other hand, school is where they spend more of their time in the later stages. When in school, the teachers are their sole authority and are responsible for their growth and development. Children have to follow the rules and regulations set by the school in order to lead a disciplined life, inside and outside the school vicinity. It is in school that the children learn academically and socially which makes them well rounded individuals. They learn how to cope with situations and deal with people which is important for them to subsist as good beings in the real world.

In conclusion, it can be said that for children to become a responsible and conscientious human beings, the involvement of both the parents and the school in teaching them right from wrong and good behaviour within the society is necessary. Separately, they cannot be held responsible for the children’s overall growth and development into ethically good members of our society.

Request Compensation or Refund # IELTS Letter

Topic – Complaint Letter

You had a meal at a restaurant. You are not happy with the service. Write a letter to the manager to complain about it. Give details about the problems and request compensation or refund.
Write at least 150 words.

Answer – (Level Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a regular customer at your restaurant because of the excellent quality and an array of delicious meals that you offer on your menu. This is regarding the meal I had at your restaurant last week. I took my friend for dinner whom I had raved to about your delectable cuisine.

Both my friend and I sat and went through the menu to decide the order. As we sat there, neither did anyone fill up our water glasses, nor did they come to take the order. I had to literally go up to the front desk to request the water as well as place the order. Even after having placed the order, our meal arrived an hour later and that too cold. It was quite embarrassing and disappointing for me as I had given excellent reviews about your food and service to my friend.

After finishing the unsatisfactory meal, I still paid for the food and left a tip for the service staff. I am unsure about the reason for such sloppy and distasteful service and it would be nothing except common courtesy to refund the bill. I request you to look into this matter so that I would once again be confident to visit your restaurant.

Goodwill,

Amit Jindal
