Celebrations are part of life that gives life to our lives. Special events become reunions, allowing far-flung family members to see each other in the context of celebrating their loved ones and bringing people together in unity, harmony, and peace. Fortunately, I have been part of numerous celebrations so today, I will be mentioning one such special event.

Just like everyone else, I eagerly wait to celebrate my birthday with my near and dear ones. My birthday happens on the 28th of January which makes January a special month for me. Last year my parents and friends arranged a surprise party for my birthday. After returning from work my friend called me to accompany her to the market. She picked me up from my place and we both left my home. Meanwhile, my parents and friends decorated the house with streamers and balloons. After spending two hours in the market we returned home. I rang the bell on my door and, to my surprise, no one came I tried to open the door, and it was unlocked. Once I opened it all my friends and family plunged from the floor and shouted out loud- “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! I was astounded.

My friends bought a special birthday cake for me. It was a chocolate cake, with juicy cherries on the top. They also presented me with a super sweet card with my photos on it. On top of that, my parents handed me a gift, I was so curious and wanted to open it right away and so I did inside it was my first laptop, I started crying in happiness as I had always wanted a laptop. Then finally we cut the cake at midnight marking the end of the day! My family and friends had given me the greatest surprise I could ever imagine. My last birthday was one of the most beautiful moments, and I will cherish it forever.

IELTS Cue Card Describe an interesting place in your country that is not visited by many tourists.

Describe an interesting place in your country that is not visited by many tourists.

You should say:

  • Where is this place?
  • What do you like about it?
  • How do you go there?

Sample Answer

India is a multicultural country with many beautiful tourist attractions. For a number of factors like location, ease of travel and popularity, some destinations remain less-known. Uttarakhand is home to a few such places that are difficult to reach as they are nestled deep into the Himalayan mountain ranges.

One such place is Deoria Taal, a lake situated on a hilltop near a village called Sari. Located at a distance of 250 kilometers from the state capital Dehradun, it is a quaint lakeside place.  I love its beautiful surroundings and breathtaking views. One can clearly see two of the tallest peaks in the Himalayan range from the viewpoint near the lake. The diversity of the flowers and the trees, coupled with the serenity of the water body provide a soothing and calm environment to the visitors, making it an ideal spot for a weekend visit.

To reach the lake, visitors have to trek for about three kilometers. The nearby area is surrounded by dense forests on high peaks and is largely uninhabited.  Moreover, Deoria is a freshwater lake with a grassy area next to it, making it perfect for camping in the lap of nature.  Also, there is a lot of wildlife that comes to the lake to drink water. So, lucky visitors can enjoy the wildlife as well. Even though the lake is open throughout the year, summer is the best time to visit this place.

IELTS Cue Card : Talk about a time when you received poor service

Talk about a time when you received poor service:

You should say:

  • When was it?
  • Where did this happen?
  • What did you do about it?

Sample Answer

We often go to various places to avail different kinds of services. I too have been to many places like hotels, offices, car showrooms and garages. Today, I’d like to talk about a time when I received poor service.

I work as a senior manager in a software company. A few months ago, my team and  I went to a popular restaurant near our office. It was a team lunch to celebrate our successful year. We were greeted, welcomed through the grand entrance and seated. The place was full and quite busy. It took almost fifteen minutes for the waiter to bring water to our table and present the menu. I felt bad but I didn’t make any issue about it. All of us chose our preferences and gave our orders. We kept on talking about different things. Half an hour passed but no one brought our orders. It was very upsetting because we were getting late.

I went to the reception to complain about the delayed service. The receptionist apologized and went ahead to expedite our order. We finally received our drinks and food.  We started eating but when two of my colleagues found strands of hair in their soups and in pieces of bread, the situation became unbearable. This was the last straw, we all got up and left the place without saying a single word. After reaching the office, I sent a formal letter of complaint to the restaurant manager. In compensation, we received an invite to an evening meal for all of us, along with a sincere written apology and promise of the best service. We didn’t go there again but it somehow made us forget that bad experience.

IELTS Cue Card TALK ABOUT A PERSON WHO WEARS UNUSUAL CLOTHES

Talk about a person who wears unusual clothes

You should say:

  • Who he/she is
  • What kind of clothes he/she wears
  • What do you feel about his/her clothing choice

Sample Answer

Fashion and clothing has always been an important part of the society. We have different dress codes for different occasions. It brings out people differently. Today I’m going to talk about one of my friend who dresses in an unusual manner. Her name is Mansi and she is a fashion blogger. She started fashion blogging with one of the most offbeat dressing sense. Her peculiar dressing sense has actually made her one of the most popular fashion model of the town.

She wears saree with jeans and long boots. Sometimes she wears a scarf as a top. She usually wears different types of hats and caps with Indian outfits which gives her a different look. She has never failed to surprise me with her eccentric appearance. Once I saw her wearing a dress made out of newspaper, she wore it for her shoot. Moreover, I have never seen her repeating her outfits. She can literally prepare an outfit from whatever is available, be it newspapers, pieces of old clothes, pillow covers, bedsheets and even towels. She has also started a small business of fashion clothing and named it “Cranky Couture”. Her fashion store is gaining popularity among townspeople.

I believe her clothing choice is quite strange yet impressive. In a short span of two years, she has gained a lot of fan following in social media due to her unique dressing style. Going offbeat always makes an individual remarkable. I’ve have never seen someone with such unusual clothing before. Her outfits are sure to turn heads. Whenever I go out with her, people look at her with eyes wide open which actually makes me proud of her and the fact how she is normalising such kind of fashion.

Follow up questions:

Q1. Do you like shopping for new clothes?
Answer: Yes Of course! I love shopping for new clothes. Buying clothes makes me happy and it is the only kind of shopping that I enjoy. I often go for shopping when I do some remarkable work and reward myself with new clothes.

Q2. About how much money do you spend on clothes a year?
Answer: I don’t remember the exact amount, but I think I usually spend around 10,000 to 15,000 Indian Rupees in a year on clothes and I believe that is the minimum amount that an Indian girl spends on her clothing.

Q3. Do people dress the same when they are depressed as they do when they are very happy?
Answer: I feel people dress up differently when they are in different moods. Such as when people are happy they wear bright and colourful clothes, and they actually try to look better than usual. For instance people are most happy when it’s their birthday or some family function, so they try to look best. On the other hand, when people are depressed, they don’t make many efforts to look good.

Q4. What do you think about men who wear earrings?
Answer: I think it is completely their personal choice to wear earrings. Fashion is all about comfort and if men are comfortable with that, we should not judge them. Fashion has no gender. Wearing earrings is their way of expressing their sense of fashion.
