New language testing arrangements for UK visas:
IELTS to continue to play leading role
On 20 Feb 2015
- The UK government has announced important changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for visa purposes;
- IELTS and IELTS Life Skills have been approved for UK visas that require proof of English language level;
- The new test–IELTS Life Skills–will be introduced for people who need to prove their speaking and listening skills at level A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
-The UK government has announced important changes to language testing for visa applications, reducing the number of tests accepted for visa purposes and bringing in new requirements for the way the tests will be administered.
IELTS – the world’s most popular test of English for higher education and global migration – has been approved for all UK visas that require applicants to provide proof of their level of English. This continues the important role which IELTS has long played in language testing for immigration in the UK and other countries, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Common myths about IELTS which make most of the students nervous about the exam
1.Non-native speakers can’t get a band 9 on IELTS
2.I have to keep practicing tests to improve my score
3.I need to learn long lists of vocabulary to be successful
4.They make the IELTS test too hard so overseas students can’t get into university
5.If I don’t understand the examiner in the speaking test, I will get a low band
6.If I take the test in my country, I will get a better score
7.The examiner is looking at the clock in the speaking test so I must be very boring
All these are just myths and have nothing to do with the actual exam. It will be really helpful for the students if they just concentrate on the exam rather than getting worried for something which ain't true.

Funding options for foreign studies
Educational loans are the best means of financial aid for sponsoring the abroad education. Banks will help in arrangement of funds as parents usually well aware about their financial condition. So, it’s better to approve your loan in advance. There are number of foreign and private banks that are providing loans for foreign education. Banks demands collateral for educational loans which may be insurance policies, FD’s, NSC’s or a house of same worth. They charge some simple or compound interest on the loan amount which should be paid during the education period otherwise it will be added to the principle loan amount. So, it is good if the interest amount should be paid during the tenure of education either by parents or their wards.
Also as per universities norm, one can choose two-three family sponsors. So, if you have any relative who can sponsor your fund, then it will help you in decreasing the loan burden. One can pay the dues according to his own convenience to their relative. But in case of Educational loan, you have to repay the whole amount within 5 to 7 years after completion of your course. Repayment of loan starts either from 6 month after getting a job or one year after course completion.

Sujish is a 31 year-old native Malayalam speaker from India. He got an overall Band 8 in IELTS (with an amazing 9 in Listening) and became one of the winners in our IELTS results competition in March. Here are a few things that Sujish did and recommends that you do to gain a higher score in IELTS:
He says
Listening
Listening was never a problem, except for handling the tension in the first few minutes of the test. I am a regular viewer of English movies and English TV series. However, I practiced for the test before the exam to gain experience with the kind of questions that may be given.
While watching the movies, sometimes I used to switch on the subtitles in order to clearly understand the conversation. I never felt any difficulties with understanding the monologues on TV (for example the Discovery channel and National Geographic).
Reading
I am a regular reader of English newspapers. This helped me to complete the reading test before the allowed time. During the exam, I read the questions first and then went to read the paragraphs; this helped me identify the area where the answers to the questions reside.
Speaking
The only difficult part in this sub-test was handling the tension during the interview. I was able to achieve this by having a friendly talk with my IELTS examiner for a few minutes before starting the exam.
I deliberately used some phrases that I learned after registering for the exam. Moreover, I got a friend to interview me at least once every two days through Skype.
Writing
Writing is the difficult part of the test for me since I am a software engineer and I have not written anything on the paper after my graduation. My handwriting is the worst I have ever seen.

Update: Sujish asked the IELTS test centre to re-evaluate his Writing section, and as a result his score went up from 6.5 to 7.
Congratulations to Sujish on getting the score he really deserves!

"Is there a vocabulary list for the IELTS?" is a common question in many heads while preparing for IELTS.
In short, no, there isn't. The content of the IELTS test changes from test to test and always comes from a wide range of sources. The best way to prepare is to read a variety of newspapers, magazines, leaflets and articles.
We recommend reading about health, technology and travel, as these are regularly featured IELTS test topics.

Grammar and Vocabulary matter!
It is important that you use correct English, appropriate grammar, and a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures!
Grammar and vocabulary make up half of your speaking and writing scores! They both form 25% of your writing AND your speaking score.
In the listening and reading tests you need to have accurate spelling (so you need to know a lot of words!) and you also need good grammar so you can make sure the sentences make sense!
We at IELTSBAND7 make sure that our students concentrate on their grammar and vocabulary each and every time they write, read and speak.

For those who are new to the world of IELTS
IELTS is an English Language Proficiency test that is required to be taken by non-native English speaking students for study in countries where the medium of instruction is English.
IELTS is accepted by universities in UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It has become a mandatory test for study in Australia. It is getting popular in US also. Almost all major US Universities accept IELTS.
You cannot be granted an Australian student visa without an IELTS score, TOEFL is not accepted.
All other study destinations either require you to take the TOEFL or IELTS. IELTS is becoming popular in USA. In many Canadian Universities either of IELTS/TOEFL would work.
IELTS is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions. American academic institutions are increasingly accepting IELTS for admissions purposes.
IELTS evaluates your English language ability (reading, writing and listening). A good score (usually 6.0 and above) is an entry requirement for many colleges and universities worldwide.
You can repeat the test as often as you like, but only at intervals of at least 90 days between test dates.

Make the most of your Reading test:
1.Look out for the title, headings and any special features such as capital letters, underlining, italics, figures, graphs and tables
2.Make sure that you understand the questions and follow instructions carefully
3.Pay attention to timing; do not spend too long on one passage or question
4.Do not try and read every word; remember, you are reading for a purpose
5.if you do not know the answer to a question, attempt it but do not waste time; move quickly onto the next one
6.Do not panic if you do not know anything about the subject of the text; all the answers can be found in the text
7.The word(s) you use must be taken from the Reading text; you must not change the form of the word(s) in the text
8.Do not worry if there is a word that you do not understand – you may not need to use it
9.Check your spelling
10.Be careful to use singular and plural correctly
11.Focus precisely on what you are asked to do in ‘completion’ type questions
12.Check your answers

These include questions which test your ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information, ability to understand the opinions and attitudes of speakers, ability to understand the purpose of an utterance and the ability to follow the development of ideas.
A variety of voices and native-speaker accents are used and each section is heard only once.

Reading
60 minutes
The Reading component consists of 40 questions. A variety of question types is used in order to test a wide range of reading skills. These including reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, recognising writers' opinions, attitudes and purpose.
IELTS Academic
The Academic version includes three long texts which range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical. The texts are authentic and are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. These have been selected for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for candidates entering university courses or seeking professional registration.
IELTS General Training
The General Training version requires candidates to read extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks and guidelines. These are materials you are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English speaking environment.

IELTS Academic
The Writing component of IELTS Academic includes two tasks. Topics are of general interest to, and suitable for candidates entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration.
Task 1
You will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event.
Task 2
You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.
IELTS General Training

Speaking
11 to 14 minutes
The Speaking component assesses your use of spoken English, and takes between 11 and 14 minutes to complete. Every test is recorded. The Speaking component is delivered in such a way that it does not allow candidates to rehearse set responses beforehand.
Part 1
The Examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
Part 2
You will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic to finish this part of the test.
Part 3
You will be asked further questions connected to the topic in Part 2. These questions will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issue. The part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.

Common mistake made by students in listening test during IELTS EXAM :
Listening test consists of 4 sections. Before each section you will hear some instructions and there will be some time to look at the questions. Then the recording will begin playing and you will need to listen and write down your answers.
You will be writing the answers right in the Listening booklet, next to the questions they belong to.As you also know, at the end of the Listening test the answers must be written on the Answer Sheet. And here is the part you need to pay attention to:
"Some people mistakenly choose to copy the answers to the Answer Sheet during the time they are given before each section begins".This is a BIG mistake, because that time is for you to concentrate on reading the questions about the new section (that is about to begin),
it is the time to try and understand what’s coming – it should not be used for looking back or copying answers.
After the test you will be given 10 whole minutes to copy all your answers to the Answer Sheet and only then you need to be doing that.Any time spent on copying during the actual test is WASTED, it’s not doing you any good – in fact it distracts you and therefore harms your score.

What to do ?

Listen to and read the instructions very carefully.
Remember you hear each listening only ONCE.
There is 30 seconds between each listening and often about 20 seconds between each set of questions within a listening.

Use this ‘spare’ time carefully to read the questions and survey the page, get an idea of the context e.g. who is speaking, where are they, what is the purpose? Also, try to predict the type of information you need, e.g. a name, a place, a point of view etc.

Listen to the recording and write your answers on the question page.

Don’t worry too much about spelling now, just write what you hear.

You will have time at the end to check.

Don’t stop listening because you think you’ve got the answer.

Sometimes, speakers correct themselves, or change their minds.

Try to carry 2 questions in your head i.e. anticipate the next question
If you think you’ve missed an answer, don’t panic! Forget it and quickly move on to the next question.

As you look at the questions, think of synonyms or other ways of saying the same thing, e.g. if the question asks about how something is financed, you might hear something about funding.

How to transferring your answers?

At the end of the test, you have 10 minutes to write your answers on the answer sheet. Be careful, the answers must be spelt correctly, make grammatical sense, and be the correct number of words according to the instructions. If you have problems remembering when to use capital letters, write all your answers in capitals e.g. write ENGLISH not English, and certainly not english!!!! Check your spelling – look at the answer you wrote on the question page and ask yourself: Is this right? Last but not least, make sure you put the answer against the correct question number. You don’t want to get a lower score than you deserve because you got this simple task wrong!

Do you find all of the different English language test scores confusing? Do you have trouble comparing a TOEIC score to a TOEFL score? Well, that's understandable because there are a number of different language tests and they all have different systems. Even the TOEFL Paper Based Test, TOEFL Computer Based Test (TOEFL CBT), and TOEFL Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT) all have different scoring schemes.

The table below shows comparisons between various test scores and level systems (like TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS) and the VEC level system. Use this table to compare your own score or VEC level with the approximate equivalent score of another test.

What is IELTS - General Training?
Well the IELTS exam has two formats:
ACADEMIC and GENERAL
It has 4 sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and texts reflect both workplace and social situations. The General Training version of the test is typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries to do secondary education, work experience or training programs. This version of the test is also often a visa requirement if you are planning to migrate to English speaking countries including Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand.
In short :
It is for those who want to go abroad for working and some vocational training course, work experience.
It is also used for immigration. weather they are graduate or not...

Why English Level A1 ?
Spouse & partner: If you intend to apply under the spouse and partner route you must provide evidence that you have passed the speaking and listening components of a test at
level A1 or above. You do not need to demonstrate reading and writing skills. Where a test examines all four components (speaking, listening, reading and writing) you do not
need to pass the reading and writing components, you only need to evidence passing the speaking and listening components.
After completed A1 :
Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A young man asked Socrates, an ancient Greek philosopher, the secret of Success. Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met.
Socrates asked the young man to walk with him toward the river.
When the water got up to their necks, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water. The man struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him under water until he started turning blue.
The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get up. The first thing he did was to gasp and take a deep breath.
Socrates asked, “What did you want the most when you were under the water?”
The man replied “Air”.
Socrates said: “That’s the most secret to success. When you want success as badly as you want air, you will get it. There is no other secret”.
